anonymous_user9··on Capital Wants a Monopoly
The author's argument is that the current system in the US isn't working, so we do need an equivalent of a system that actually works.
anonymous_user9··on US banks are blocking third-party AI agents access to customer accounts
That seems sensible. When their AIs inevitably fuck up, those people are going to blame the banks and demand fraud protection etc.
anonymous_user9··on UK Defence Startups Are Being Denied Banking Services Under ESG Rules
> when defence spending was naïvely thought to be immoral.

Glad that's been settled!

anonymous_user9··on The Commodore 64 hardware simulator: break chips and pins, see the results
No, because the simulated computer does not exist in the real world. The host's physical characteristics only affect the simulation if they cause the host computer to malfunction.
anonymous_user9··on BIPM decides to stop adding leap seconds to UTC
I'm not sure if I completely follow you, but I'd like to ask: Why is it a problem if there's a divergence between UT1 and UTC? Besides astronomers, who cares if the sun is directly overhead a few minutes later than it "should" be?
anonymous_user9··on BIPM decides to stop adding leap seconds to UTC
UTC is still fixed to the sun. Without leap seconds, it will be hundreds of years before the divergence between UTC and the sun is perceptible in daily life. Even then, I can't think of anything where that would matter.

I think there is a good alternative available, UT1. UTC was always divergent from UT1 anyway, so this change shouldn't affect anyone who actually needs precise solar timekeeping.

More importantly, there are many good reasons to drop leap seconds, such as the massive increase in complexity they impose on all time-related code.

Standards should serve people, which is why leap seconds should never have existed. Imagine: "Sure some airliners crashed, and half the internet went offline for a couple days, but if you drive to the right longitude line, the sun will be exactly overhead at 12:00:00, and here in town it's overhead at 12:23:48. That's worth anything. I'd hate to live in a world where it was overhead at 12:23:49, or that'd be over my great-great-great grandchildren at 12:23:47."

anonymous_user9··on BIPM decides to stop adding leap seconds to UTC
IMO it's not a simple thing, even at a surface level.

"A minute has 60 seconds" is simple.

"A minute has 59, 60, or 61 seconds. Consult CGPM publications or your national timekeeping authority to find out." is not simple at all.

anonymous_user9··on I know why the mathematicians weep
Yes, for all we know they're exploiting a bug in Lean.

anonymous_user9··on Executive order on H-1B nonimmigrant visa administration
The USA is far wealthier, uses more carbon per-person, and is responsible for more historical emissions than China or India. We have an obligation to reduce our gluttony before asking others to go without.
anonymous_user9··on US troop deaths during Iran war exceed Pentagon count by at least four
Are you saying that calling people racist is the worst bigotry?
anonymous_user9··on How to Write with an LLM
Those of us using our human minds to extract meaning from specifications and manuals don't want to look at LLM slop either.
anonymous_user9··on Ex-FTC boss Khan: break out the handcuffs for AI CEOs, citing 1934 precedent
What happened to the remaining 39 months of his term? Are you saying he should've instantly fulfilled every campaign promise the moment he took office?
anonymous_user9··on Ex-FTC boss Khan: break out the handcuffs for AI CEOs, citing 1934 precedent
> Mandami have never run a business, or worked for a business, and it shows.

In record-high approval ratings, multiple reforms supported by small businesses, and fast progress on many huge initiatives?

anonymous_user9··on My Mental Model of AI Broke on September 8
> even understand without putting some serious study into the subject.

Then how can you possibly know that it's true?

anonymous_user9··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
Fair enough on Zitron being wrong, but I think the opening argument about Meta, Google, and Microsoft misunderstands his point.

Zitron is saying that the hyperscalers had no genuine growth opportunities, so they're using the AI bubble to achieve growth. The fact that they've continued to grow for a few years doesn't contradict his point, and Meta's steadily decreasing profit margin certainly doesn't look healthy.

anonymous_user9··on "Two 2030 AMD racks are expected to deliver same compute as 570 racks in 2024"
Maybe the difference in hardware (producing 2 racks vs. 500)
anonymous_user9··on Cerebras CS-4
Conspicuously missing: power consumption figures
anonymous_user9··on Suzanne: AI tool for designing and manufacturing physical products
What is it with AI people and plagiarism? Here they are stealing Blender's mascot as their brand. (Scroll down to "Everything real was designed first" and they even have the Suzanne model spinning behind the text.)
anonymous_user9··on The main way I've seen people turn ideologically crazy (2025)

anonymous_user9··on Launch HN: ProvenMetal (YC S26) delivers circuit boards in days instead of weeks
Oops, true. I regard Anthropic and OpenAI as essentially the same company. Neither of them seem capable of securing their infrastructure.
anonymous_user9··on Launch HN: ProvenMetal (YC S26) delivers circuit boards in days instead of weeks
> we have a heuristic harness that Fable 5 uses to check the board for DFM issues

So OpenAI gets a full copy of every customer board? I wish that was mentioned on the upload page.

anonymous_user9··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
I've been using one of these 1700K bulbs [1] for a few years, and it produces a pleasant light. They also have a 2400K model [2].

anonymous_user9··on Show HN: I worked on a new browser for 2 years, today it passed Acid 3
If you're going to "Show HN" you should show something. This just a hastily-extruded [1] landing page with no details.

Also, using an agentic framework and writing code by hand "a lot of the time" does not count as "from scratch".

anonymous_user9··on IMAX vs. IMAX 70mm: The difference between these two cinema formats
It's not illogical, because film behaves differently than CMOS/CCD image sensors. Film scanners can then digitize the film's nuances more very accurately, resulting in an digital image with better dynamic range etc.
