anotheracc88··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
It is work work not passive, but I write dev docs for $80/h. But it is simple work, you just go research and write. No Racoon calling out to Wingman to get user info provider services.
anotheracc88··on Ask HN: Does retro computing make you feel younger or older?
Makes me feel free as in speech. My acorn electron didn't phone home. It was home.

There is the video that mocks mongodb because it returns success before the data is persisted. Try writing your data to a cassette tape ;)

anotheracc88··on He Built Apple's 1980s iPad Concept [video]
Watched it all. Brilliant maker video. Impressed by the dedication to hours of sanding. Worried he would saw off his fingers trimming the FDD :-o. Keyboard is particularly impressive as is using off the shelf parts for IO and getting the 3d printed case to fit them perfectly. Floppy ejection using steping motor is a fun touch. Love it. Also all the tight tolerences!

I am looking into making a product for fun 3d printing, rpi etc but it'll be 1% of the sophistication of this.

anotheracc88··on Get instant user feedback with micro surveys from Uplooped
You are pricing at premium. So get an artist for your graphics. And fix text wrapping on mobile. You need to be impeccable!
anotheracc88··on Ask HN: How do you manage the risk of losing access to your email address?
Lazy way. Gmail. Takeouts every so often. Namecheap domain and use free forwarding to said gmail.
anotheracc88··on Ask HN: Is NPM Having an Outage?
You switched to C?
anotheracc88··on JSON parsers that can accept comments
You can also put JPEG binary data in RSS feeds, send a string of emojis for an SSL handshake and stick HTML 1.0 directly in a docker image. You can do those things. You can even write tools that accept those things.
anotheracc88··on UK bans daytime TV ads for cereals, muffins and burgers
Yes if you choose annuity but you can also buy those with regular cash so it's as relevant here as price of tea.

Pensions are more tax efficient and offer a better option of investments (companies) than what is effectively fiat interest going into a lottery pool.

If you have cash in premium bonds you might die young then pay inheritance tax.

Better give your kids cash earlier to live off or invest to avoid this, and so they can over-stuff their pensions ;). Not many people think that far ahead (60 year horizon)

anotheracc88··on UK bans daytime TV ads for cereals, muffins and burgers
This is not systems thinking though. It take a lot of will for parents to fight kids desire for junk food from social pressure alone. Should parents be perfect citizens that make 10000 correct micro decisions a month correctly every time? Or can society help a bit by blocking some of the predators?

It is like "just say no". Thay'll do it for drug addicition. Simple.

The perfect. Enemy of the good.
anotheracc88··on UK bans daytime TV ads for cereals, muffins and burgers
For Youtube often the content is an ad too. Will Google need to stop serving huge swaths of content to the UK at certain times? Hope so!

Even better, pay that money into a pension and buy a lottery ticket.
anotheracc88··on "BGP at home": getting a DIA circuit installed at home
Non exit node was implied
anotheracc88··on Tell HN: Need help, locked out of Google account with 10 years of personal data
Yes. For example emails are an mbox file amd there are free mbox viewers. You then have something like an old school mail client to view emails.
anotheracc88··on Tell HN: Need help, locked out of Google account with 10 years of personal data
Try a different network entirely. Maybe you have a bad neighbour on that IP address. Or you are fingerprinted for some other reason.

If your phone has downloaded data, such as emails and contacts, back that phone up right away. At least that is something if not everything.

anotheracc88··on Tell HN: Need help, locked out of Google account with 10 years of personal data
Google takeout. Do it every 3 months. Easy peasy..

Good for privacy too. It jas everything! Look through it an permanently delete what you don't want them to keeo.

Note that it is slightly lossy with respect to headers, times etc. Not ideal for anything legal related. For those print them off.

anotheracc88··on "BGP at home": getting a DIA circuit installed at home
Sounds good but what are peoples use cases. Versus getting a regional EC2 and working from that?

Anything privacy related, running a TOR node etc. I get it.

anotheracc88··on "BGP at home": getting a DIA circuit installed at home
That was written by an investor. Weirdly... would make me more interested in them if I were someone who needed investment.
anotheracc88··on My second year without a job
The median would be zero or close.
anotheracc88··on Mistakes as a new manager
The mistakes are common. Almost tropes.

It would be like golf swing or skiing mistakes. Every instructor knows em.

anotheracc88··on Mistakes as a new manager
Indeed. Purposefully stay off the critical path! Do coding that helps you keep up with what people are talking about. Not coding that is urgent!
anotheracc88··on My second year without a job
I have not been out of work since 2002 but same time... I earned nothing close to 500k or even 250k.
anotheracc88··on My second year without a job
Ooh. Lesson: if you are out of work go bare bones. You don't need a entrepenerial flat in the city. You need a shitty room in the suburbs where you can commute to the city by train or bus ideally (dont have a car). Call it runway and it sounds better. If you spent 20k/y then the 60k becones 75k in the market and you are doing better.
