anotheraccount9··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
TUI, GUI.. we need a marriage of both, with configurable levels of integration, which controls to favour TUI or GUI. If it's well done, no need for a mouse, but nice and easy to have. Add to this a thin glove checking for certain movement patterns when the user is not typing and voice to set certain things - all at once.
anotheraccount9··on Medieval-style fortifications are back in the Sahel
Is there anyway to actually read the article without paying?
anotheraccount9··on Fable 5 is Back
Not exactly. Every time I ask something using Fable, it switches to Opus. The subjects (and I tried many) seem to be irrelevant.

Basically, I can't use Fable.

anotheraccount9··on One million passports leaked online
I'm sorry to say this, but most people don't care. Most governments don't care. Companies don't care. Not that it's not important. But protecting people's ID is at the lower part of the list for most organizations. There are hardly any consequences. Leaking PII is still a joke nowadays.
anotheraccount9··on Canada plans 'nuclear renaissance' with up to 10 reactors built by 2040
Hopefully, Canada will not get bullied by US for selling it cheaply.
anotheraccount9··on 'Ghost jobs' could soon be illegal in New York
My company does it all the time. I've noticed all these ghost jobs are advertised in the same large city (Toronto), yet our offices are elsewhere.
anotheraccount9··on AI overly affirms users asking for personal advice
AI being a Yes-Man is slowly sabotaging it's own answers, because it negatively impact the user's decision. Yes/No are equally important, within a coherent context, for objective reasons. But being supported in the wrong direction is a castastrophe multiplier, down the road. The AI should be neutral, doubtful at times.
anotheraccount9··on How to make a damn website (2024)
With the amount of crap and complexity we now have online, I miss gopher and well arranged text files.
anotheraccount9··on Amazon S3 Adds Put-If-Match (Compare-and-Swap)
Could you use a meta field from the object and save the hash in it, running a compare from it?
anotheraccount9··on Morsle – A daily Morse code challenge
I recall listening to a cassette that would go through the alphabet, like a song. I tried hard, but never really got the hang out of it. But this time, Morsle would build the bridge more easily.
anotheraccount9··on Ask HN: Clicked Inc asking for sexual orientation when registering
Upon registering for an account on Clicked.com to access intro cybersecurity courses, I encountered a field inquiring about my sexual orientation. I'm uncertain as to why Clicked.com would collect such data. I wonder if this is a growing trend among career-oriented online platforms (or anything common really).

Is this asked for diversity and inclusion purposes? Are they simply collecting data to resell or marketing purpose? What is your take on it?

anotheraccount9··on STORM: Get a Wikipedia-like report on your topic
Yes, and it's not possible to delete the account (or association with).
anotheraccount9··on STORM: Get a Wikipedia-like report on your topic
A very interesting project. Btw, I could not find a way to delete my account when created. I've also found that the generated report is very generic and quickly goes outside the actual question or specific theme/keywords used.

A final point, the notice states that "The risks associated with this study are minimal. Study data will be stored securely, in compliance with Stanford University standards, minimizing the risk of confidentiality breach." When I use STORM, I can see other people's request. Are they supposed to be confidential?

anotheraccount9··on The case for not sanitising fairy tales
I recall a quote from Mr. Gaiman:

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” ― Neil Gaiman, Coraline

anotheraccount9··on "The Door Problem" (2014)

anotheraccount9··on Show HN: I built a directory about big life decisions/regrets

anotheraccount9··on Ticketmaster confirms data breach with a SEC filing
Sounds like the Equifax breach response ;) nothing to worry I guess
anotheraccount9··on Making a PDF that's larger than Germany
For a moment I wasn't sure if I wanted to click on the link.
anotheraccount9··on 23andMe is reportedly turning the blame back on its customers
By default, we should offer a choice for levels of security. At least a password, with SMS or 2FA. And if the company makes a few bucks, even more options.
anotheraccount9··on Vector Databases: A Technical Primer [pdf]
If I read organized data from a traditional db, and add new tables based on potential similarities from the existing data/tables, with scores, would that be a vector db?
anotheraccount9··on 23andMe confirms hackers stole ancestry data on 6.9M users
How convenient.
anotheraccount9··on The Unix-Haters Handbook (1994) [pdf]
I can't wait for an AI/OS to simply ask it what I need to do.
anotheraccount9··on Travle: A daily game – get between countries in as few guesses as possible
Super game, but after it's done, how do you restart the game (world level)?
anotheraccount9··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
Being finally able to work in US, after 15 months of spending savings to survive. Ouch.
anotheraccount9··on Kidney stone procedure "has the potential to be game changing"
'Breakthrough'
anotheraccount9··on Atomic Rocket
That would be a gift.
anotheraccount9··on Woman's Pockets Are Inferior
If women wanted larger pockets, they would be using them. But they prefer not - based on market, preference and selection.
anotheraccount9··on How to fit a large program into a small machine (1980)

anotheraccount9··on Ask HN: How are so many fake ads allowed on YouTube?
"Google has become a toilet of the Internet". Well, they are recycling it into gold right now.
anotheraccount9··on JWST discovers massive and compact quiescent galaxy
