Hyperbola GNU/Linux user. My main tools came from https://t3x.org, and https://github.com/howerj it's for fun (and sometimes enlightening purposes). tmux, tcc/cproc, oksh, nvi... keep it simple, stupid.

anthk··on Survival LLM: AI assistant and emergency library that runs on your own computer
Recoll it's far smaller and it runs on a potato. It's a desktop search engine which can parse tons of files. Under GNU/Linux just install all the recommended dependencies for APT/RPM. Or just use Flatpak and to hell with transitive dependencies.
anthk··on Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain
I'm from Spain, I know it well. Just check what happened with short-distance trains.
anthk··on Spain train crash: 'At least 10 dead' in high-speed collision
Also the train network was neglected a lot since the 70s-80s so the car and oil companies could earn huge profits.
anthk··on Python's experimental JIT to be removed
I've seen worse reimplementations. For what it does it's pretty close.
anthk··on Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain
In Spain the train network was neglected so car and oil companies could earn tons of money since the 70's.

But Toledo-Madrid it's a special high speed network with thousands of daily users heading Madrid to work, which is just 1h away from Toledo.

Still, I will always be pro-train because they can mass deliver goods at much higher ratio than by truck.

anthk··on Python's experimental JIT to be removed
RustPython it's pretty mature.
anthk··on Txoko: Basques' traditional feast a gastronomic peek into a culture (2024)
It's a two-sided personality of the Atlantic Spain. Far more reservated and shy than Andalusians, with a really different mindset. But if you became a friend of some group, you will keep your friends forever.
anthk··on Python's experimental JIT to be removed
The Rust based Python3 port can keep it and it can still be far more secure than CPython. Not everything it's JIT'ted on RustPython, it's ondemand per function, you have to enable it explicitly.
anthk··on Nietzschian Debugger
Then just run M-x doctor under Emacs.

Asterinax. RustPyhon. PHP 8.5 rewrite in Rust. FFMPEG and Qemu might follow soon. It's inevitable.

anthk··on Why Gopher in 2026?
gopher://sdf.org and gopher://magical.fish have far more than retro-onanism.

Please, compare them again :)
anthk··on Why Gopher in 2026?
Gemini it's good on legacy machines and some clients can be really barebones (awk+less), and for some security there are clients written in Go. For awk+less, do yourself a favour. Run

    unset LESSOPEN
or have it at ~/.profile.

Reticulum it's unusable in 32 bit machines, it badly needs a Go port for nomadnet.

On Gopher, well, lynx/sacc and maybe i2pd for some security and anonimity.

As a start, there's:

     gopher://magical.fish
     gopher://sdf.org
For gemini,

     gemini://gemi.dev it's nice.
'Lagrange' covers both gemini and gopher as a client.

You can set an HTTPS proxy for it and read news sites and blogs over Gemini.

Just set

     stargate.gemi.dev:1994
As the HTTP proxy in the settings for Lagrange.

For the terminal guys, there's Telescope and it can use HTTP proxies as well. Read the man page.

anthk··on The Goose Programming Language
Try Common Lisp and Coalton. Also, Common Lisp and that one math proof solver.
anthk··on How to run a city builder on 16 MHz
I banned any Electron turd in my machine, amd64, 8GB, Pentium Silver N5030. I am even trying a VS Code clone in Rust+Tauri as my IDE for Rust programming. It's semi-Electron, but far lighter.
anthk··on Node2Shell evolves to HTTP2Shell, blast radius affects many HTTP libs and apps
Check Librsvg, or php-rust. Or tons of gtk4-rs software doing it just fine.

anthk··on Reforming English Spelling
>: iño is common in the northwest due to influence of Portuguese,

And the Galician influence into Spanish, OFC. For the HN'er, once Galician and Portuguese where the same language.

anthk··on Reforming English Spelling
>(which in Spain's Spanish is the famous 'lispy s' sound)

No. In Spanish Spain it's

za, ce, ci, zo, zu with /th/ as in think.

anthk··on DNS: A Replacement for Finger

anthk··on I turned my TV into a Game Boy Color with a Pokemon town as my home screen
The GB color had a similar intro right? I can't remember, I gave my GBC to a friend over 25 years ago.

> GSC were coded with GBC colors

Crystal had a much wider palette for the GBC because it was a GBC-exclusive game while GS had to be retrocompatible with the GB.

anthk··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
Apple can rewrite the media and PDF libraries in no time in Swift/Rust, they have tons of money to waste.
anthk··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
If I were Google I'd try to rewrite Chromium in Rust. The FFMPEG folks should try porting the whole codebase to Rust too. They can always keep the legacy versions for legacy computers (my old n270 netbook can barely play 720p@30FPS anyway, and it's too slow to downsize 4k video to 720 or 480p...), so a bigger amd64 machine will always be -reallistically- needed for anything else than <=720p consumption.
anthk··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
It cuts down most of the crap trying to trash your machine's RAM (virtual memory in the end, but today it's almost as if you didn't have a MMU). It's good enough.

On less powerful machines, dear Mutt+isync+msmtp users like me, please use AERC (written in Go) against these. It's slower, but far more secure than C. Also, SLRN needs a Go rewritten clone (able to point to slrn's caché) like nothing else. Comp.misc and comp.arch still are extremely valuable.
