antonyt··on American views of higher ed decline, once again
Your parents' earnings directly impact how much college costs for you. And costs across the board have ballooned out of control for decades. To me, what you describe is a romantic ideal that's impractical and outdated, at least in the US.

antonyt··on Oregon lawmakers approve money to buy an iconic waterfall listed on Redfin
I have no doubts you're right, but got any examples? Just curious to see them.
antonyt··on New Apple TV 4K
Most likely the storage is for game installations. Apple has been somewhat pushing it as a gaming platform.
antonyt··on I hired an illustrator to draw my house. Now it's my Home Assistant dashboard
It's a wide spectrum. It absolutely can mean "if Samsung has a bad day my house becomes uninhabitable."

But speaking as somebody also using Home Assistant, I'd bet the author has everything set up without internet access, fully locally controllable, and entirely operable the old fashioned way if Home Assistant goes down.

antonyt··on Anti-patterns in software blogging
Not OP, but it's the "as if I were an expert" part that rankles. It's fine to share your experiments and learning projects, but frame them as such. Some writers present their imperfect weekend experiments as if they're doing us a favor by giving out their genius for free.
antonyt··on Mistral Large 4
By investors. OpenAI and Anthropic are not profitable (Anthropic is profitable if you allow them to invent what profitability means).
antonyt··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
A critique of OpenAI from an insider who worked there can only come from an insider who worked there. Nobody’s going to swear a vow of poverty and then work at one of these places.
antonyt··on To grieve, or not to grieve?
The number of people with PHDs longing for tenured positions comically dwarfs the number of tenured positions available.
antonyt··on I Don't Like LLMs
These are not contradictory statements to me. Even if I don't anthropomorphize LLMs, the damn things anthropomorphize themselves and I have to deal with it. "Posing" is the key word.
antonyt··on AI boosted homework scores, then exam scores dropped: study
These are students aged 12-18. Even if we ignore all the other negative externalities of AI and assume it will be ubiquitous and cheap, kids need repetition and exercises to make inferences and develop intuition.

Sure - you can ask AI to, for instance, calculate how much money you'll have given a fixed principal and a compounding interest rate. But we need to get a kid to the point where they even understand what the question to be answered is. If they're using AI all along the way, they are developing less understanding of what fractions and exponential growth are.

Will it stop the really smart and motivated kids? Of course not. But at population scale there will be big consequences.

antonyt··on I like 'em thick: an apology to my English teachers
I don't think the author is claiming you HAVE to be a dick about it. But that the pursuit of "thickness" does in reality give ammunition to a lot of people who are inevitably dicks about it seems observably true to me.
antonyt··on Picking berries is my meditation
Is meditation so rigidly defined? It would seem to me that a certain kind of activity done with a certain kind of mindset could be deeply meditative. Disclaimer: I am not a meditator.
antonyt··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
Were all the other vaccines "well understood" when they were initially rolled out en masse? Not a rhetorical question, I genuinely don't know the history.

I don't really understand what people's expectations were for a new vaccine intended to combat an ongoing global pandemic.

antonyt··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Not OP, but I would guess: "hydration breaks" to inject commercials, half-time shows that felt alien to much of the core audience, and various rule-bending shenanigans (Ronaldo, Balogun).
antonyt··on Gemini Robotics 2 brings whole body intelligence to robots
We show many signs of stopping our infinite expansion.

As for why we want dexterous robots, the obvious answer is to do things that we don't want to do. Things that are back-breaking, disgusting, dangerous, or just plain boring.

antonyt··on Superlogical
"I think this guy is dumb and wrong. Oh no, this dumb wrong guy is going to have outsized influence on a project I'm interested in. Oh no, this dumb wrong guy may profit from a project I'm interested in. Oh no, this dumb wrong guy is using his wealth to do dumb wrong things."

This is a normal and reasonable thought process.

antonyt··on More Tailscale tricks for your jailbroken Kindle
One thing I really appreciate about KOReader is that it runs on so many devices. I like its stock experience, and I can have that experience on my Supernote and on my Kobo, and sync progress between the two.

Over the years I've gone from Kindle to Pocketboot to Boox to Kobo. Sometimes eReaders break, sometimes I hand them down to family members. Whenever I need to buy an eReader, as long as runs KOReader somehow I can pick the device purely based on its hardware instead of worrying about the stock software, compatible formats, etc.

But you're absolutely right that finding the specific setting you're looking for is an unintuitive process.

antonyt··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)
Do you have any examples of "a single note for minutes and get it to sound amazing"? I'm finding this difficult to imagine. A lead voice doing this while some accompaniment is changing chords underneath makes sense to me, but then you're back to harmonic relationships.
antonyt··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
Charitably, you could read this as "its overall intelligence [is in a class that] ranks second only to [that of]..."
antonyt··on IBM is on pace for its worst day ever
Depends what happens next. RSUs are taxed as ordinary income at their market value at the time they vest, so it's not necessarily bad if the stock is down.

In fact, the ideal scenario is that the price drops just before your vest and then bounces back up after.

antonyt··on Delta flight hit by firework while landing at Midway Airport on Fourth of July
Your own link contradicts the assertion you’re making about the origin of the fire.
antonyt··on I Am Behind on C# 14 Features, and I Can't Prove It but Does It Matter?
I'm not speaking in vague generalities here. New features in C# do not stop you from writing old C#, and they never have.

Here's code that uses the delegate keyword introduced in C# 2.0, twenty years ago. You'll rarely see an explicit delegate in a modern C# codebase, but the C# compiler is still happy for you to use it.

antonyt··on Europe's resistance to AC is driving it insane
In my experience they absolutely do. The houses by and large aren't very well designed or insulated, and electricity isn't that cheap. In the southeast I rarely see home thermostats set to the 60s or low 70s. Office settings are a different question, though.
antonyt··on I Am Behind on C# 14 Features, and I Can't Prove It but Does It Matter?
This is not how new language features work in C#.
antonyt··on Texas man sentenced to 30 years for transporting pamphlets
You commented on this thread! You must be involved! Prison for you.
antonyt··on The room the economy can't see
My impression is that voluntarily child-free people have a very low regret rate, but there are dozens of conflicting studies on this. Interested if you have anything concrete to link to.
antonyt··on Leak Reveals Microsoft Wants Its AI to Be 'Addictive'
What does his status as a foreigner have to do with ruining Windows? You can't think of any homegrown American CEOs that systematically ruin their products and companies?
antonyt··on The Public Should Own Half of the Big A.I. Companies
Individuals have faced federal charges and served prison time for reselling copyrighted content. I don't see the same happening to AI execs.
antonyt··on Are You Enjoying Our Linguine? (2025)
On formatting: having the big-text snippets occur before they do in the main body was jarring. I think it's more normal practice to lift out specific quotes after they have occurred in the text, not before.

On content: if it's any consolation, America is doing this to America as well. Locals everywhere are wringing their hands over stylistic homogenization, Instagrammability-driven design choices, and rapidly increasing prices.

antonyt··on Are You Enjoying Our Linguine? (2025)
The conclusion of the piece is that this is no longer a uniquely American phenomenon.
