apercu··on US Reps Lead Democratic Resolution Opposing A.I. Bubble Bailout for Big Tech
The investment to date has been ridiculous and undisciplined. It’s very hard to understand the valuations of these companies. If this wasn’t an election year I think there would be more oversight and critical review. But we have a very unserious party in charge right now.

It’s good that it’s being discussed. We’re tired of the wealth class privatizing the profits and leaving us to cover the costs.

apercu··on I went to Mexico to test-drive the cars Americans can’t buy
I found the user experience terrible as well - just trying to turn on the wipers or change the heat required trying to remember where they were in nested menus on a touchscreen while driving at 100kmh on the 401.
apercu··on Leak Exposes 41,000 Homeland Security Workers–Including Undercover ICE Agents
All articles that expose the Trump crime family and its cronies get pushed to irrelevance on HN.
apercu··on An examination of lost firefly species of the US and Canada
I live semi rural and have an oak, maple, hickory and birch on the property. Half an acre is being restored to native prairie. But I do have to “rake” some, and mulch some or the grass will die and the hill I live on will erode.

I do leave as much as I can, and I leave them on the ground as long as I can for insects to hatch. In 3.5 years I think I’ve seen an impact with more fireflies, plus more wildlife activity in general.

Yeah, Madison

Or even a little skin in the game for staff that are interested in it.
apercu··on US agency approves Amazon Leo’s $11.5B acquisition of Globalstar
I consulted for iridium for 8 years from like 2009-2018. They very much still exist?
apercu··on From confession to conspiracy: How the Wedgewood fake polls story spread
Funny how the party that always screams the loudest about election fraud is the party that keeps getting caught (but somehow not really punished) committing election fraud.
apercu··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
So bezos’ parents were in a position to fund him to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, Enron musks dad owns mines, bill gates mom was on the IBM board. It very much has little to do with skill.
apercu··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
You know what MS also did on Friday? Used auto update to wipe out all Mac Office 2021 Licenses to try to trick people in to 365 subs.
apercu··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Platform was super unreliable for a while after that - although that might be related to making all the software changes to turn it in to an even worse cesspit.

Edit: Enron Musk apologists will always crack me up.

apercu··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Wow, while I think that large headcount often leads to terrible products (looks at Apple for the last 5 years), MS platforms and software are SO BAD and more un-supervised AI slop code isn't going to fix it. I never want anyone to lose their job but this seems like a massive reduction.
apercu··on Moderna and Merck say their mRNA cancer vaccine cut death, recurrence by 42%
Or both.
apercu··on Danish Government silently drops plan to dump MS Office
I hate to say this butt I wonder if you could just generate a CSV (I use python for this sort of thing) and send to a vendor to just make the labels for you? (Admittedly this is a North American view point) but it might actually be less effort (time for you) and cheaper.
apercu··on Big Tech Oligarchs Have a Terrible Plan for Humanity
Eh, maybe. The ones I know that exhibit this type of behavior are either deeply unhappy or deeply insecure, or both.
apercu··on Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone
Funny the stuff that gets flagged on HN. Tongue and boots.
apercu··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
There are some things that current generation LLMs are extremely good at. They also suck for a lot of reasons and appear to be prohibitively expensive to train as "general" models.

hey are amazing tools, but every time I see a task that LLMs helped me complete in 30% less time, I see 5 more tasks that took me 30-50% longer to complete because of errors, lies, mistakes, hallucinations, context limits.

Do not tell me I'm holding it wrong.

apercu··on Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone
Why does HN want to bury this conversation? It says now it's dupe, but then where is the other one? I looked 7 pages deep. This has 278 point.

HN, SV, it's so gross now.

apercu··on Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone
The typical supporter and typical MAGA politician, well, they’re just not serious people. Too bad they have done so much damage.
apercu··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
If people were honest this is probably it true of most. I can do light physical work for 8 hours pretty easily. I can only do knowledge work to a high level 3-5 hours a day.
apercu··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
One can hope.
apercu··on Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads
Re: feature creep.

I wonder if Apple simply has too many employees?

It’s unfortunate that new features that no one asked for and that degrade the user experience are added to releases with increased frequency ever year.

apercu··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
I’m not sure anything is worse than Trump. He’s an amazing case study of a complete incompetent that somehow has a solid base of supporters. It’s baffling to me as I’ve always thought he was a crass blowhard and I fundamentally cannot understand his appeal.
apercu··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
I wish “even Republicans” but that party stands for nothing any more, it isn’t even conservative. It’s the most bizarre and morally bankrupt thing I’ve seen in American politics and I’ve been paying attention since the 80s.
apercu··on Big Tech Oligarchs Have a Terrible Plan for Humanity
Same. Non-sociopaths understand that with power comes responsibility and I don’t want to be responsible for everyone else so I don’t want power.
apercu··on Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet
I've been mostly happy with sweetwater - but they use USPS and I had a shipment (strings) take 2 weeks.

I've started to use more "mom and pop" stores - Philadelphia Luthery instead of Stew Mac (Stew Mac shipping is a joke, they want you to "subscribe" for $120 a year now, and places like "The Acoustic Shoppe" in Missouri for strings.

Right? Wear a f*cking sweater and socks in the winter, instead of shorts and a tank top, rather than not be able to do laundry.
apercu··on Ledger confirms spy chip implant behind wallet crypto thefts
I had 3 whole bitcoin. Lol.
apercu··on Ledger confirms spy chip implant behind wallet crypto thefts
This is why I sold my bitcoin early - all those years of reading Phrack. Sure, it was $300 at the time and I could have made more, but I had no idea how to securely _store_ it. Still don't.
apercu··on GPT‑6 and Intelligent UI for everyone
"intelligent UI"

It seems like every week OpenAI adds some new feature to the chat UX that wasn't tested, doesn't work at certain resolutions, doesn't work on some platform/browser combos and hogs all the memory/CPU.

Intelligent UI my ass.

Edit: I should add, features that no one asked for, too.
