appleflaxen··on The Gimmicks of Food Labeling
> But I can proudly and honestly say I’ve never been sanctioned by a court for filing anything frivolous.”

What a noble man

appleflaxen··on Just Build It...
You disagree that keyle wants feedback?

That's literally all they said.

How can you disagree about what one individual says they themselves want?

appleflaxen··on The boy who stole Half-Life 2 (2011)
What life was destroyed?
appleflaxen··on The End of the Googleverse
I think people loved their products but hated their monopolistic pricing.
appleflaxen··on Microsoft is using malware-like pop-ups in Win11 to get people to ditch Chrome
Wow. That's incredible!
appleflaxen··on Why do shared hospital rooms not violate HIPAA?
> Any doctor's office just blindly asks you sign a HIPAA authorization release form.

You are incorrect. You are being asked to acknowledge that you received a copy of their privacy policies. You can decline and it doesn't change very much (if anything), because they will still document that they informed you of them... which they did.

It's understandable that people don't read what they're signing; I often don't have time, either. But you are posting about that form having not paid much attention to it, which is less common, in my experience.

appleflaxen··on Hundreds of thousands trafficked to work as online scammers in SE Asia, says UN
It's the modern day slave trade.
appleflaxen··on A DIY ‘bionic pancreas’ is changing diabetes care
This article has nothing to do with cancer, though.

A bionic pancreas won't help you at all if your native pancreas developed a malignancy.

appleflaxen··on Notepad++ v8.5.6 still vulnerable to possible arbitrary code execution
I think that N++ is a one-programmer project.

Don Ho seems like a really cool guy.

I hope he is able to get the patch Incorporated, because it sounds like the security team provided one.

Thanks Don, for your work; and thanks Jaroslav, for the security discovery.

appleflaxen··on Walmart cuts pharmacist pay, hours while workload piles up
You have no idea what the reality is.

They are overworked and employed by mega corporations.

They are all miserable.

Talk to one.

appleflaxen··on Okta Personal
I'm not giving my phone number to a company with a history of poorly handled security problems.

appleflaxen··on Running WASI binaries from your HTML using Web Components
I get "Runno crashed: ReferenceError: SharedArrayBuffer is not defined" in every component.
appleflaxen··on Crypto has ‘amplified financial risks’ in emerging markets, central banks warn
The institution that controls the currency will always fight any alternative currency.

That's one big piece of the value proposition of Bitcoin: it is governed by user consensus, not political power.

appleflaxen··on Amazon Honeycode Shutting Down
Damn. Never heard of it but it looks cool!
appleflaxen··on AI real-time human full-body photo generator
When I refresh enough I get duplicates. How come?
appleflaxen··on Firefox changed the default setting for pull-to-refresh to disabled

appleflaxen··on A Critique of the Cap'n Proto Schema Language (2019)
OMG. I'm so sorry to see this news!

RIP zenhack

appleflaxen··on A testimony of “guilt-by-association” harassment in astronomy
In my opinion saying "women support rape culture" in reference to the author approaches that high load. If I had said it, I would be worried about a slander suit: calling a person a supporter of rape culture seems like slander per se, unless the author has done something worse than work with an academic pariah.
appleflaxen··on Microsoft Lost the API War (2004)
Yeah that's pretty important information!

It's fascinating, though, to read it from 2023 and judge how astute the observations were or weren't.

appleflaxen··on The Plumber Problem
In the Matrix humanity is enslaved to use them as an energy source.

But the 2nd law of thermodynamics requires that any energy harvested would be, by definition, less than the energy of the food required to sustain their bodies.

Therefore the plot makes no sense, because they should just shovel the food directly into the computer and skip the humans.

appleflaxen··on How to calculate how much water you should drink
Yes. There is no medical basis for any amount of water above "what you're thirsty for".

Our thirst system is as precise and robust regarding water as our pancreas is for glucose.

appleflaxen··on Thinking Fast and Slopes
> overestimating low-probability events is not irrational — it's optimal

It can't possibly be more optimal than estimating them correctly.

appleflaxen··on $HOME, not so sweet $HOME
Your criticisms of XDG are criticisms of the process used to build the solution, not the solution itself.

This is particularly strange in light of number 3, which basically says "I don't care about process; only the final result".

appleflaxen··on Twitter's response to US Government search warrant (turned over deleted DMs) [pdf]
Twitter is playing games about turning over all the records requested by the government.

They are pretending that a database search for an IP address, for example, in two different tables is a big challenge and requires them to "make" the data because they don't have all the matching IP addresses pre-queried.

Twitter is likely doing this because musk is now in charge, and wants to help the criminal conspiracy by hiding and denying the legally requested evidence

appleflaxen··on How do we save water: Stop growing alfalfa in Imperial County
It's an irrelevant distinction.

If the water went into the alfalfa and 100% of it evaporated, leaving bone-dry hay going to the middle east, then the hay is still the only remaining symbol of $13,000 worth of water you used to have, and sold for $1000.

Where the exact losses are within the industry is entirely unimportant.

appleflaxen··on D&D and keepsake games are set to collide in 2024, and I’m here for it
I hate the idea of writing campaign details directly in your book, and buying a new book when the campaign ends.
appleflaxen··on Positive association between altitude and suicide in U.S. counties
Great points, but the word exonerated makes no sense in that context.
appleflaxen··on Software Engineering at Google (2020)
> Part I. Thesis

...and then it's blank.

Am I missing something?
