arethuza··on I didn't know I was lacking in Vitamin D until I collapsed at work
I don't know about the rest of the UK but here in Scotland the NHS recommends that pretty much everyone should think about taking a Vitamin D supplement from October to March and possibly year round for those people in risk groups:

No bill for anything - accommodation, food, ambulance transfers, treatment, medicines...

In fact if you do get private treatment in the UK they make it clear that if things go badly wrong they will take you to an NHS hospital.

Well, I'm old fashioned about these things...

I have a Nikon P1000 while it doesn't have the best image quality does make up for it in having a truly remarkable zoom: 24-3000mm. Just the thing for taking pictures of birds and then working out what they actually are at my leisure.
arethuza··on Where the Romans Fought (interactive map)
It's a lot clearer than a lot of reporting dashboards that I know for a fact were created by people!

I suspect we'll find out that "programming is good for your brain" as well...

NB I'm 61 and recently started developing something almost entirely for the mental workout if provides

Edit: I also wanted to use HTMX so I could become CEO one day

And thinking about the height of mountains in meters even though the reason for walking up them is because they reach a certain height in feet.
arethuza··on No Need for Retirement When Utopia Is Around the Corner
I would read Ellsberg's book - a part of it can be read here:

"I remember what I thought when I held the single sheet with the graph on it. I thought, this piece of paper should not exist. It should never have existed. Not in America. Not anywhere, ever. It depicted evil beyond any human project that had ever existed. There should be nothing on Earth, nothing real, that it referred to."

Driving distances in miles, walking distances in kilometers!
arethuza··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
Cooked bones are definitely a risk for dogs - I always check meat I give our dog from a roast chicken to make sure it doesn't contain any bones.

I think if an LLM had read any discussions on how best to remove burrs from pet coats then it might eventually get to Velcro - I believe the inventor of Velcro got the idea from burrs?
arethuza··on Yet another way to invoke functions without parentheses
Do you have to write a function first before it is referenced in PostScript? (I did a lot of PostScript programming in NeWS once - but it was ~35 years ago...)
arethuza··on Artificial intelligence is capitalism's final destination
Or the AIs end up existing in some kind of economic framework that is completely inaccessible to lumps of meat - like the "Economics 2.0" of Accelerando.
arethuza··on Yet another way to invoke functions without parentheses
For some reason this made me think about all of the potential complexities that can be involved in CLOS in calling a generic function and some method(s) actually being invoked...

If you ask software development companies, plumbers, builders or lawyers to give an estimate of what some work might cost you'll probably get similar variations?

When I was a student I worked in the summers at a maltings making malt for Scotch whisky - a very large, highly automated facility and nothing like the romantic visions we all have of distilleries.

arethuza··on Denmark Data Breach Exposes 8.8M People's Personal Data
It's a bit like physical security of your house - could someone break into my house, not easily but it's a house not a bank vault. Keeping our gate closed and having a large dog (who is actually very friendly) about the place probably keeps the vast majority of possible thieves away.
arethuza··on Blindsight (Watts Novel)
While I would agree that the Culture series does give a positive view of AI the novels themselves do have quite a lot of rather dark elements...
arethuza··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
The law in the UK appears to be that is is perfectly OK to use a touch screen so long as you "stay in full control" and aren't holding the device:

https://www.gov.uk/using-mobile-phones-when-driving-the-law

NB My car has loads of features that I would expect to use while driving that can only be accessed through the touch screen.

From experience I can say that people at level (particularly in sales) are very good at selling themselves - following through and delivering on those promises can be a very different thing.
arethuza··on Thinking fast and slow in AI: The role of metacognition (2021)
No - there were lots of other interesting things going on in the early 90s that I managed to pivot to. Never regretted not completing as I had given up any desire to work in academia by that point.
