the phallusy fallacy
argentier··on Beyond Greece and Rome
Look at the volume of quotations of Avicenna (Ibn Sina) and Averroes (Ibn Rushd) by medieval philosophers as a counterpoint.
argentier··on Beyond Greece and Rome
you could more accurately relate it to the Greek war with the Persians. That's where many of the tropes about Western freedoms vs Eastern tyranny originate. Long before the Latin church was heard of.

See Aeschylus' The Persians

argentier··on Beyond Greece and Rome
That's more of a statement of the 'Plato to NATO' Western civilization meme than anything real.

Newgrange has nothing to do with the Celts: it predates their arrival by several thousand years.

argentier··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
In Ireland at least local calls were a fixed price, no matter how long the call was. Long-distance calls were billed by the minute.

argentier··on Well being in times of algorithms
> "The future has lost it's appeal to me"

culture is stuck in endless remakes of optimistic 70s futurism

it's an important point: we don't have a future, a telos, that doesn't fill us with foreboding

argentier··on UK, Canada and Australia formally recognise Palestinian state
Untrue. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_Jews

There are between 300 and 350 thousand Jews living in Iran. I presume the other numbers are similarly nonsensical.

argentier··on The Ghosts of Gaelic
The Irish spoken in the North West of Ireland (Tir Conaill) is pretty much indistinguishable from Scots Gaedhlig.

The real division is between Gaelic (Irish and Scottish) and Brythonic (Welsh, British and Cornish)

argentier··on Why I Program in Lisp
"properly working lambda expressions were available only in lisp until recently."
argentier··on Thomas Aquinas' skull reveals appearance and cause of death
Chesterton described Aquinas as looking quite like Chesterton. Judging by the name at least half a millenium separates Myron Shibley from Aquinas.

Can't it just be a myth, as it seems to hang on a single anecdote?

For comparison, the medievals thought that Ovid's name, Publius Ovidius Naso, was because he had a good nose for sniffing out the truth.

argentier··on Is Tor still safe to use?
you have the truth - it was cooked up by US Naval Intelligence - why would you think it was safe?
argentier··on Is Tor still safe to use?
safe as it ever was
argentier··on The Insecurity of Debian
The NSA is about insecurity, not security. They're a SIGINT shop

argentier··on EU aims to shift European arms industry to 'war economy mode'
These are simply US talking points, and not very good ones.

The Russians were, as they made clear on multiple occasions, threatened by NATO moving into Ukraine and potentially placing missiles close to the Russian heartland.

Whatever he arrived with, it changed the plans of the Ukrainian government. I don't see how it removes any agency from Ukraine, or why that would even be a meaningful statement.
argentier··on EU aims to shift European arms industry to 'war economy mode'
Sure, Russians are uniquely evil orcs.

This is just propaganda for the rubes.

Don't be ridiculous. There are interviews with both sources that are available online.

he would say that, wouldn't he?
argentier··on EU aims to shift European arms industry to 'war economy mode'
"Clarified" -- yes he walked it back under intense pressure. His words were in a long podcast you can listen to.
argentier··on EU aims to shift European arms industry to 'war economy mode'
It's about Russian security, not Putin's vanity. Please try to raise the level of discourse beyond the boogyman propaganda so beloved of Hollywood.

This is serious, deadly serious, and seeing it treated so lightly is painful.

Was that when the Georgians caught the Russians by surprise by attacking Russia's protectorates?

Took the Russians quite a while to get their act together.

Are the aggressors usually caught on the hop?

argentier··on Good times create weak men (2019)
You asserted that the reasons for war were absurd, and you blamed 'macho-ism', which you didn't define.

So you go: why are the reasons for wars so absurd?

Was machoism the cause of Gulf War 2, or the Ukraine war, to give two recent examples?
