arithmetic··on Working at Google - the first 6 months
This is a shoddy sales pitch, at best. Remember his first post as soon as he left Msft titled "Thanks Microsoft, Hello Google" (http://dondodge.typepad.com/the_next_big_thing/2009/11/thank...). I'm all for talking about your past work experience, but that particular post just costed Don his credibility.
arithmetic··on Video: Steve Jobs on Flash (D8 Conference)
>>And they're using a crappy Flash video player that doesn't support full screen and keeps resetting when it runs out of bandwidth

That's pretty ironic, if you ask me.

arithmetic··on Sony Announced Death of the Floppy Disk
About time, wouldn't you say?
arithmetic··on Ask HN: Where to buy a desktop PC?
I would get the parts (from Newegg, Fry's etc.) and build one on my own - it turns out to cost lesser and lets you control what goes into making your PC. That, and there's always the good feeling of building something from scratch for personal use :)
arithmetic··on Startup Advice in just three words
Make epic products.
arithmetic··on Simple rules for good typography
Good post! When you think about it, most of these are brain-dead and so intuitive, that you'd think everyone follows them by default. Often, I see over-use of emphasis (italics, bold, or underlined) and abrupt font size changes without reason.
arithmetic··on Scheme from Scratch - Bootstrap v0.1 - Integers
I'm no C programmer, but I love how clean the code is. Good work!
arithmetic··on Google won't make search recommendations for "Islam is"
Maybe it's just a bug? Haven't you found phrases which you thought were very popular and yet couldn't find Google recommendations for them?
arithmetic··on [dead]
Uh, sea lions != dolphins.
arithmetic··on Forensic analysis of recent Victoria's Secret photo
This is enlightening! I'm an amateur photographer who likes to post-process some images (mostly tweaking contrast, brightness and the hues). This post taught me quite a bit on photography forensics.
arithmetic··on Ask HN: New Year resolutions and programming/coding projects
What kind of site are you building?

For me, it's about "stop spending all my time on that one boundary condition that 0.1% of the users will hit" :)

arithmetic··on Ask HN: New Year resolutions and programming/coding projects
Sweet! Thanks for the links!
arithmetic··on Ask HN: New Year resolutions and programming/coding projects
I'll start with my own. One of the projects that I'd like to work on, is to build a site with PHP,MySQL and JQuery. It's a really simple idea, but I want to learn JQuery properly and there's no better way to learn a library than to build something that uses it.
arithmetic··on Uncommon - Custom design your own iPhone case
Really slick. And that's saying a lot since I typically dislike iPhone cases (they look clunky and makes the iPhone look big and ugly) - I love the designs you have on the site. Good job folks!
arithmetic··on Aaron Swartz: How I Hire Programmers
Did they phone-screen you before they asked you to come over? I can't imagine a company asking each of its candidates to come spend an entire day with them without a prior filtering of sorts..
arithmetic··on Pyscheme: Scheme in Python
I like how the author says " I certainly don't mean for this to be useful or anything! grin Still, I hope that someone gets a kick out of it."

:)

arithmetic··on Aaron Swartz: How I Hire Programmers
Great advice - I like the fact that Aaron keeps it real simple. I also like how he doesn't like questions along the lines of "counting the number of piano tuners in Chicago". I've been witness to interviews with similar questions and I'm always left wondering as to what the point was.

That said, I'm not sure if all of his advice can be followed by a reasonably medium sized company/organization where hiring decisions are made by a committee, rather than one person.

As a side note, I think that reading a resume can actually be a good starting point to understand the candidate's background.

arithmetic··on The Physics of Bras
Exactly the way I'd expect nerds to discuss breasts :)
arithmetic··on [dead]
What a grand title for a fluffy article!
arithmetic··on The illusion of gender
The example here (and the theory that the more the contrast, the more "female") is too black-and-white (no pun intended). It's not just contrast - there is a reason why women are called the "fairer sex". A face that is whiter, has no visible facial hair (and smooth skin) is natually perceived as female.
arithmetic··on Online Shop Till You Drop With Your Friends On Plurchase
It's like being stuck in a shoe store with your wife and her female friends. Forever.
arithmetic··on Online Shop Till You Drop With Your Friends On Plurchase
Plurchase uses a neat idea to act as a proxy for shopping sites. They don't seem to be storing passwords before sending them off to the actual sites (which is good). I hope it takes off. Good luck!
arithmetic··on List of Mathematical Blogs & Wikis
Such a great list. Priceless! Thanks for the link. (upvoted)
arithmetic··on Piratebay strikes back
Hilarious! This is worthy of a movie. Or a soap opera at the minimum.
arithmetic··on Google’s Abandoned Library of 700 Million Titles: Usenet
Hmm, look at the glass half full. Someday when you're popular, people will find your Usenet remains and quote you on it. That's cool.
arithmetic··on Hackintoshed: Life With My “MacBook Nano”
The screen real estate always bites you (as stated in the article). 9/10 inches is just not good enough for all the Mac UI.
arithmetic··on Shark Eats Entrepreneur Alive
"The founder of XYZ, reportedly missing since last friday was found alive when some fishermen off the coast of ABC cut open the belly of a freshly captured shark. Along with the founder, the fisherman also found some kittens, a few pieces of string and a whiteboard marker."
arithmetic··on Most Brilliant Products of 2009: Techcrunch Crunchpad Tablet (?)
Dont' call them products until you've sold one of them. Or even made one of them.
arithmetic··on Shark Eats Entrepreneur Alive
It's not about the stake or the developers. The whole deal sounds fishy. Why won't the investor provide references? Why should the decision be made right away (next day or two)? Why shouldn't this person publicize the site?

When it looks too good (or too suspicious) to be true, it probably is.

arithmetic··on So...what the hell's wrong with you, Shooter?
You are extremely brave. Not a lot of us would go through crap seeing so many doctors and hospitals without going nuts. I hope you recover completely soon. Thank you for sharing - somedays I think my life is tough, but these are reminders that I'm way off the mark.
