arkwin··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
32GB of RAM only? What? Also weird that they are talking about token speed, but no larger LLMs can fit on this thing.

Also, what happened to the I/O?? I was happy to see on the M4 they had HDMI, an SD card slot, and more. Why are they back to 2 USB-C ports? I only see pictures of one side, but the left side has traditionally had more I/O.

C'mon, Apple, do better. It's a PRO model, not a MacBook Air

arkwin··on IRCv3
I've been having some fun with this!

I think IRC is a neat, and had some fun vibe coding https://github.com/karazajac/switchboard and https://github.com/karazajac/rIRCd

Trying to implement a modern client and server based on IRCv3! :)

Mostly just a personal fun project.

arkwin··on Ask HN: What Linux distro do you daily drive?
Fedora with KDE as the DE.

OS is solid, everything works, I'm happy.

The older I get the more I feel myself thinking like Linus. The OS should just get out of my way.

You're missing the point. I was only saying those things to show that arguing ethics and morals is bad because it's a never-ending self-imploding purity spiral. I am not trying to argue those views, nor am I refuting some argument because the replier is trying to claim some moral high ground.
arkwin··on Protecting our FLOSS commons from LLMs
The moral/ethical high ground argument just spirals.

Oh you drive a car? You should justify that to me.

Oh you bought any piece of clothing, tech, etc where it was made in countries with cheap labor and bad labor laws? You should justify that to me.

Oh you use electricity? Idk some of that is made via non-renewable resources.

Oh you eat meat? So much animal suffering and land is being wasted.

I get using an LLM has some problems. But I find it ironic that for most people, they didn't have a problem with any of this until it started to affect their job and their expertise.. And their paycheck.

Where was your outcry for anything else? Or is it just performative?

I sure hope you are also only using products and services derived from union labor.

arkwin··on Protecting our FLOSS commons from LLMs
US courts have ruled (for better or worse) that using code to train LLMs is a transformative piece of work and not subject to the original copyright.
arkwin··on Protecting our FLOSS commons from LLMs
Thank you; that is probably a better way to put into words what I am feeling.

I've never called myself a developer. But I've been playing with Linux and looking at code for the better part of 20 years.

I've done a lot of larger solution development. "Glue code," etc.

I think I use LLMs quite well. I mean, on some level, I understand software architecture and system architecture.

I've (before LLMs) had a master's degree, CISSP, Sec+, CEH. I am a pretty "qualified" person for whatever that means.

AI has made the chore work easy. It also allows me to think deeper about something than just bashing my head against code. Instead of spending time writing code, I'm researching technologies and thinking strategically about what something should look like years from now.

I've spent weeks and months, even on pet projects with LLMs. Things I use daily too.

But somehow "LLM coders don't care" is just annoying.

arkwin··on Protecting our FLOSS commons from LLMs
Hey, thanks for taking the time to reply. And you bring up some good points. I'll be the first person to tell someone I used Claude on this. Hell I make sure it says co-authored by claude on my github projects specifically because I'm not trying to hide the fact that I'm using LLMs.

I think you are correct, is not not really an LLM problem as much as its a person problem.

But there doesn't seem to be a good way to fix this. If anything LLMs just expose someone's integrity? I don't know, its a hard answer. Some people use LLMs just because they are translating languages.

How do you prove "work" or "knowledge?"

arkwin··on Protecting our FLOSS commons from LLMs
Open source developer: I'm going to open source my software so the world can use it for whatever they want!

World: creates LLMs

Open source developer: >:(

Maybe don't open source your software if you're going to get mad about it?

arkwin··on Protecting our FLOSS commons from LLMs
I can see the point you are trying to make, and I'll make a counterpoint to that. When you play the "didn't earn" card, you are really getting nowhere. It's a bad argument.

It's putting up the gate, "I feel you didn't work hard enough for X result, but I did, so I must be better"

I drive a manual car. Should I hate every automatic car driver?

I have a master's degree in cybersecurity; should I shit on everyone who doesn't when they try to mention anything involving cybersecurity? I mean, I have a piece of paper that says I've earned it?

On some level, yes. I would listen to the advice of a doctor over a random person on the internet.

On another level, it's like saying, " Oh, you didn't have a blacksmith handcraft that knife for you, and you bought some machine-made knife? We should ban machine-made knives; the person making a knife using a machine didn't 'earn it '."

Perhaps you shouldn't create code; after all, you probably didn't develop a compiler. Or the computer chip running it... Or the OS.. Did you really earn the right to develop something?

arkwin··on Death of the Status Update: Why 55% of Americans Stopped Posting on Social Media
Its why I built https://terrarose.org. while it only has a couple of users, and a couple of posts. Its a social media platform you have to pay 5 dollars a month for.

No ads, no tracking, no bots (hence the price).

Its just me working on it, but it does work. :)

arkwin··on Claude Fable 5
I've been using Opus 4.6-4.8 in both my own and others' code to look for vulnerabilities, and I've found a few. I am also in the Cyber Verification Program.

Fable 5 gives me policy violation errors at the moment. No idea when or if it will be fixed.

arkwin··on Claude Fable 5
Just wanted to comment here: I have been using Opus 4.6, 4.7, and 4.8 just fine to look for Linux kernel vulnerabilities (I'm in the cyber verification program), and it's been fine. I switched to Claude Fable 5, and now I'm getting policy violations.

What's the point of being in the cyber verification program at this point? It looks like I cannot use Fable 5 for vulnerability research.

arkwin··on macOS 27 requires Apple Silicon, as Apple draws down the Intel Mac era
For everyone on an Intel MacBook, myself included, running Fedora 44 with t2.linux has been a breeze. About the only things not working are slow suspend/resume and a bit of a hacky workaround to fix the touchbar on resume (if you have one). Other than that, using the t2.Linux Fedora ISO has everything working right out of the box.
arkwin··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
A paid social media platform called TerraRose.

https://terrarose.org

I was tired of algorithms running my feed, my data being sold, ads, being tracked.

So I built TerraRose.

Current User Count: 2.

Maybe it will turn into something maybe it won't.

arkwin··on Period tracking app, Flo, found to be selling user data to Meta
Now is a good time to bring up.

https://bloodyhealth.gitlab.io

A secure open source period tracking app.

arkwin··on Break Me If You Can: Exploiting PKO and Relay Attacks in 3DES/AES NFC
Looks awesome! I see some Flipper Zero apps were already created. When will you be releasing this for the Chameleon? Also, any plans to port this over to the Proxmark?

arkwin··on Meta accessed women's health data from Flo app without consent, says court
I think that is the best approach for people who can do that. :)
arkwin··on Meta accessed women's health data from Flo app without consent, says court
To any other women in here, check out Drip. https://dripapp.org They seem to be the most secure.
arkwin··on The death of partying in the USA
I was a teenager in high school around 2005 and living in the Midwest. There were lots of underage drinking and parties going on during that time.

That being said, most of it was "cool parents" that allowed such behavior because we didn't own anything as teens.

We would have rules like, if you're drinking there, you have to stay the night or call your parents to pick you up.

I think it was just a different time; it seemed more forgiving. Now, a cop will pull you over and give you a DUI and mess up your life for a while. But I heard stories back then ~ '70s, where cops would make sure a drunk person got home safely at night instead of throwing the book at them.

I am sure it is harder for kids today who mostly live online in their algorithmic bubbles. And harder for parents to condone such activity, because who wants to be the parent where cops come knocking on your door and charge you with supplying alcohol to minors?

arkwin··on Show HN: RM2000 Tape Recorder, an audio sampler for macOS
Tried and bought!

One bug (possibly) that I found was that if the recorder is running in the background, the global record does start and stop, but nothing pops up to save the file. Will this be fixed in 1.0.2?

arkwin··on Google defends scrapping AI pledges and DEI goals in all-staff meeting
To the people defending the reduction in Google's DEI program, I want to tell you that you are missing the point.

For some reason, they think DEI means some unqualified woman or minority is taking the position over someone more qualified. That is not the case.

DEI was created because corporate leadership structures were "the good old boys club" where less qualified people were hired because they knew someone or were related to someone in the company over a more qualified candidate.

Still today, qualified job candidates do not get calls back because their name sounds foreign. [1, 2]

There are many reasons why qualified candidates cannot even get into the interview process.

arkwin··on [dead]
Fun little site that I think most of us have seen before! This is the first time I noticed it has a chat feature from the web console, which I thought was a pretty cool feature and something I have not seen before!
arkwin··on Make your electronics tamper-evident
In the book, "This Is How They Tell Me the World Ends: The Cyberweapons Arms Race" or "Pegasus: How a Spy in Your Pocket Threatens the End of Privacy, Dignity, and Democracy" (sorry, I read both recently), the author describes an incident where when she got back to her hotel room one night her door was open, the safe was open, and her laptop was laying there. She did cybersecurity reporting and wed how some governments abuse spyware to spy on their citizens.

I imagine the target audience for this type of security would be journalists and cybersecurity researchers whom governments might target. I'm sure other jobs could use this information to protect themselves better.

Large government agencies can afford to design systems that probably do not need these requirements, and they also probably wouldn't have any sensitive information on any unattended device.

arkwin··on Review: Energy and Civilization
It's a dense book, but I enjoyed it a lot. His newest book How the World Really Works: A Scientist's Guide to Our Past, Present and Future is also really good!

arkwin··on Kathleen Booth, the inventor of assembly language, has died
Hate to say it, but that is most likely because of bias and sexism. There are some very amazing women in tech out there that go unnoticed.
