arno_v··on We won't "just hang out"
Yeah I hope that music, art, nature, sports etc. are non financial reasons to do things, get out of the house and interact with people.
arno_v··on Identifiers are better off without meaning
I actually had the experience of using meaningful identifiers in a previous company. At that time it was really handy in a lot of day to day stuff, but I'm now thinking we might not have used them long enough to have run into the problems described here.
arno_v··on Are We Sixel Yet
Yeah, I've also been using screen for years without ever feeling the need to switch to tmux. Although remote ssh work is relatively rare for me (eg a couple times per month)
arno_v··on Fixing macOS Zsh Terminal History Settings
I will try this, recently mine got truncated (don't know why) and it's super annoying.
arno_v··on Antarctic sea ice hits lowest minimum on record
Surprisingly if you put it to 20 meters the effect globally seem insignificant. Although 80% of my own country would be flooded, so that's not great.
arno_v··on Introducing the Icelandverse [video]
Have you tried to buy a new GPU recently? :P
arno_v··on Replay-based attack on Honda and Acura vehicles
Yeah a friend of mine had that. Almost drove away in the wrong car, luckily he noticed "weird CDs" lying around.
arno_v··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
Efficiently using multi-select to edit multiple lines simultaneously (e.g. cmd-d in Atom)

arno_v··on Why Segment Went Back to a Monolith
Oh my god! Who in its right mind comes up with this? The boilerplate is 10x the size of the actual code :'(
arno_v··on Ask HN: Best Free Python Editor?
I've been using Atom for a few years, with a few Python plugins it works really nicely!
arno_v··on Writing Safe Shell Scripts (2019)
I still think for very small stuff it's easier to just write a shell script. For instance a docker entry point, where you set a few env vars, download some required files and start your main application.
arno_v··on French city of Dunkirk tests out free transport
And the public transport bikes you can hire for a couple of euro per 24hr are very popular. This way you can do the last part of your journey easily without taking you're own bike on the train. (This is actually cheaper as well, since the price of renting the bike is lower than the price of bringing your own bike on the train)
arno_v··on Kedro: open-source library for production-ready machine learning code
I’ve spend 10 minutes on this and still have no clue what it actually does. Seems to be focussed on beginners with very trivial and general tips on Git and terminal commands.
arno_v··on The Rise of German Board Games
Yeah,Epic Spell Wars is awesome!
arno_v··on Ponzi Schemes Using Virtual Currencies (2014) [pdf]
Would be interesting if they would give examples of ICOs or other crypto related investments which turned out to be Ponzi schemes or fraud.
arno_v··on Google Cloud Platform Icon Library for Architecture Diagrams
I totally agree, I have a few shortcuts in my GCE dashboard, but I seem to always forget which one is which. For instance logs, DNS and storage have super similar icons.
arno_v··on Inside the world of Australian opal miners who live underground
"Keep off grass" :D
arno_v··on Blendle Is Up to Something Big
Blendle Data Scientist here (living said dream). I'd like to mention that users do have influence on what is done with their data. We currently provide two ways of determining what data is collected, one setting (which is switched on by default) makes us collect data for internal usage. Switching this off will make us stop sending analytics events from the frontend and we will stop aggregating your data into a profile used for personalization. Note that these profiles are currently being developed and are not yet in use anywhere and once they will there only use case will be making Blendle better for its users. The other setting is switched off by default and allows us to share some data with one specific publisher (which is very clearly mentioned).
arno_v··on Computational Statistics in Python
Looks nice, but skimming through it I saw loads of typos. Makes you wonder how much effort was put into this.
arno_v··on The Problem with Job Titles
Ok, if you are indeed asking the same questions that helps. I would add some information per item with some explanation or definition, so it is as clear as possible what is meant by the different terms.
arno_v··on The Problem with Job Titles
So instead of the ambiguous text 'Software Engineer' we now have 10 ambiguous texts ranging from 'Analysis' to 'Data Science'. I don't really see how that solves a problem, since these underlying concepts are also quite hard to define consistently.
arno_v··on A city-scale molecular profile of DNA collected from NYC's subway system [pdf]
Looking at the url, it seems they don't want someone to accidentely delete the article!
arno_v··on Mae Keane, the Last 'Radium Girl,' Dies at 107
Neverwet? Soylent?
arno_v··on MIT computer scientists can predict the price of Bitcoin
This picture shows quite nicely what might happen when having too many parameters (or too little data):

arno_v··on Show HN: Pythonpy – the swiss army knife of the command line
For those too lazy to learn the right shell commands ;)
arno_v··on Fifty Years of Transistor-Transistor Logic
