Humans never get details of movie credits wrong?
ascorbic··on The United Kingdom generates less electricity per person than in the 1970s
Financial services, film studios, and pharmaceuticals use a lot less energy than steel and shipbuilding. The UK economy is 80% services, and heavy industry has mostly disappeared, aside from cars and aerospace. The UK is far richer than it was in the 1970s, but it doesn't make many ships.

It's aligned. The problem is who it's aligned with.
ascorbic··on EmDash uses Clef to moderate the plugin registry
We launched the plugin registry last week, and our focus has been on safe, decentralised plugin distribution and discovery. Stats, ratings etc are valuable, but they need careful design to prevent abuse. We will definitely add them later.
ascorbic··on Mistral Large 4
No, it doesn't have a first amendment, but it does have ECHR articles 9 (Freedom of thought, conscience and religion), 10 (Freedom of expression) and 11 (Freedom of assembly and association)

It's relevant because it's about TFA! I'm assuming you didn't read it: Netlify uses Unikraft MicroVMs

ascorbic··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
The US labs would lose billions in enterprise contracts if they were found to be secretly training on data when opted-out. It's not worth it.
ascorbic··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
You can't compare a subscription to API prices. OpenCode Go is massively subsidised. Unlike the closed labs, we can say that for sure because we can see what they're paying for their tokens.

ascorbic··on Don't Be Nice
There is no definition of "native British", just as is the case for most of Europe. The "native" population has changed repeatedly for thousands of years. This isn't like America where there was a native population that was largely displaced in the past 400 years

Really?

ascorbic··on Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service
I heard you can already build such a system yourself quite trivially by getting an FTP account, mounting it locally with curlftpfs, and then using SVN or CVS on the mounted filesystem

Would college biology have let me into a secret world where you can develop vaccines for viruses that don't yet exist? Ones that cover all possible variants, and where an AI can't tweak a protein or two in an engineered virus to avoid them?
ascorbic··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash Uncensored
Yes, but it can't preemptively develop and distribute vaccines for any possible pathogen created by AI. Once they've infected everyone it's a bit late
ascorbic··on An open letter to Dario: if you mean it, open the weights
And in the meantime, every site in the world gets hacked. It takes far longer to fix every vulnerability than it does to find one unpatched one. Mythos has led to huge numbers of reported vulnerabilities on every kind of software. If those were all dropped as zero days (which is effectively what an open weight model would do), attackers can choose an unpatched on at their leisure while defenders race to fix them all and update everything.

> A usage agreement between two private companies is not considered public access.

Says who? Just write the law so it is.

> Under your current definition, Mythos is currently in public access.

Yes

ascorbic··on P(doom)
Those are not incompatible. He can still be one of the most hated people on the planet, even if lots of people like him. The same would apply to all of the most hated people in history.
ascorbic··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
If any of the orgs that were hacked decided to sue OpenAI they'd probably have a good chance of winning. It's just that none of them has.
ascorbic··on DeepSeek v4.1 Flash Uncensored
This isn't cybersecurity. You can't use an LLM to create and administer vaccines for all potential bioweapons.
ascorbic··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
cf-ray is the Cloudflare ray id, which ends with the airport code for the colo that served the response. They're airport codes, but that's just to show the nearest city.
ascorbic··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
> It's Bluesky, they hate AI

There is a very vocal section of the userbase who are vehemently anti-AI. Blocklists help avoid them (using them or being on them). However there is also a really good AI community on there. It's generally a lot less commercially-focused than on Twitter, for better and worse. It helps that atproto itself is really good for agents. They know how to use it, and the data is all open and accessible. Lots of people have been experimenting with agents that "live" on Bluesky, some of which are really interesting.
