aslilac··on Show HN: Rustable is an open source database client built in Rust
amongst developers that percentage is much less small, and this is a developer tool.

> Yes, we support your silly OS as well. Windows and Linux users, you’re welcome.

yeah, the operating systems that underpin >90% of compute on the compute on the planet are silly and barely worth supporting.

this kind of “hey claude, write prose exactly as lame as usual but also make it snarky and rude in tone” writing is just fantastically bad.

aslilac··on Tell HN: Scribd Breached
imagine if we just turned off 90% of the non-critical internet for two weeks, hardened up in an absolute mad dash where everyone has access to top tier cyber models, and then afterwards we go back to business as usual. it’d be a disaster short-term but long-term would it be worse than the years of slow drip we’re about to go through? idk! I kinda think it’d be interesting to find out!
aslilac··on Gemini 4 Carbon
then why are both priced like sonnet?
aslilac··on So You Want to Ship a Command-Line Tool for macOS (2022)
I think the point is pretty clearly “Apple should do better and provide better tools”
aslilac··on So long, and thanks for all the bytes
good for you man.
aslilac··on Dax – Cross-platform shell for Node.js
curious about this jsr.io thing linked in the article. as a package author, the promise of a package registry that makes things “just work” really excites me, but the website provides no real details.
aslilac··on Examples of AI rip-offs making their way into Google News
> like for birthdays and stuff

I would never look them in the eyes again if I found out someone did this to me.

aslilac··on Choosing Go at American Express (2019)
not to be the “but rust” person, but I’m curious why Rust wasn’t in the test group. it seems to meet all their criteria, though the community was a bit smaller back then.

Go is a perfectly reasonable choice though, and easier to learn on average.

aslilac··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
it’s absolutely the right way to do it. third party clients are a dying breed, because people have forgotten why they’re necessary.
aslilac··on Why aren't motherboards mostly USB-C by now? (2021)
going off of you saying “micro port” I think you’re talking about USB B.
aslilac··on Why aren't motherboards mostly USB-C by now? (2021)
calling USB A “legacy” and a “relic” is so misplaced. we all still own USB A devices. I challenge the author to go find a wired keyboard or mouse that comes with a USB C plug. it’s possible, but not easy.

the thing is, we could just have both! this isn’t some winner/loser scenario. the real question should be why these computers with enough bandwidth for 11+ connectors don’t at least split the difference with 6/5 of each. gives device manufacturers enough confidence that customers will be able to plug in the thing they bought, and gives consumers the ability to plug in anything and everything they need. then in 5 years when things have advanced we can start talking about entirely consolidating on USB C.

aslilac··on Gleam: a type safe language on the Erlang VM
again, I would really like to hear what the "activists" are demanding that you think is so unreasonable.

that's a lot to assume from a couple words on a website, but if you're this fun at parties we must really be missing out.

also btw, hi, it's me, the coward who wrote the prose for the website. tho it wasn't _just_ me that thought it was a good idea. it's done a terrific job of keeping "un-politic" buzz kills away.

aslilac··on Gleam: a type safe language on the Erlang VM
trans rights are incredibly well defined, actually. they’re human rights. trans people deserve the same rights as every other human. idk what “problematic statements” you’ve heard but it sounds like you need to listen to less ben shapiro. saying you’ve heard “several” without providing any examples sounds like you just don’t like trans people.

I think it’s safe to assume that when a community claims to contain “no nazi bullshit”, they mean that it contains no nazis or their associated bullshit. if you’re worried that that includes you or people you sympathize with, ask yourself “_why_?”, because it makes a lot of sense to everyone in the quite active gleam community.

aslilac··on Ask HN: Is anyone using cloud dev environments (e.g. Codespaces/Replit) at work?
bit biased, but we use coder (I work at coder)
aslilac··on React Sees a dip in NPM downloads this week
homie, this is just what these graphs look like in general. chill.

go click on any package with substantial downloads. svelte is the same way, the downtick is just less visible because of a weirdly massive spike in their downloads.

aslilac··on UTM – Virtual Machines for iOS and macOS
Asahi Fedora is supposed to come out in the next few days. There’s hope!
aslilac··on Exploring Windows XP on macOS ARM64
You do have to build it from source, but the documentation for how to do so is luckily quite good, and there's a dedicated channel in the Discord server for helping people with build issues if you run into any problems.

You're obviously not obligated, but I'd encourage you to try building it if you're interested!

aslilac··on macOS updates for Apple Silicon Macs are larger than reported
ARM binaries in general tend to be a bit larger fwiw.
aslilac··on Node.js 20.6.0 will include built-in support for .env files
am I still the only one who thinks storing all of your secrets in plain text while using a package manager that allows arbitrary code execution is a terrible idea?
aslilac··on micro – A Modern Alternative to nano
because it's a text editor that's already fully capable of editing text. not every thing needs to constantly evolve and add features at a break-neck pace.
aslilac··on Bun v0.7.0
What's left on the roadmap before Bun 1.0?
aslilac··on Reading is selfish, elitist, and anti-social
well, I would’ve read this post but I don’t wanna be selfish, so I guess I won’t.
aslilac··on Val, a high-level systems programming language
I've had "playing with val" on the back-burner for a while. Finally tried to today, only to learn that even after 4,000 commits it's still a long shot from usable. Most of the examples from the language tour don't compile, even seemingly simple ones.

Carbon has yet to deliver on anything yet, even as Sean Baxter has been making lots of progress on the Circle compiler (including implementing lots of the good bits from Carbon).

Hard to be a successor when you can't really be considered a language yet.

aslilac··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
https://mckayla.blog

Not very many posts. I only started trying to take writing for it seriously the last few months, with a target of one post per month. But I think "All you need is data and functions" is a pretty good read! Briefly made the front page of HN shortly after it was published.

aslilac··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (July 2023)
Location: Utah

Relocate?: Yes

Technologies:

- Web stuff: TypeScript, WebGL, React, Next.js, Postgres, GraphQL, Docker, Vite, Vitest/Jest/Puppeteer/Playwright/etc. AWS, GCP, Terraform

- Other assorted things: Rust, Erlang, Gleam, Go, Github Actions, Figma.

Particularly interested in CI/CD, build systems, developer tooling, developer experience. If you want a random small internal CLI, I can probably hack it out in a day. If you work with Erlang/Elixir and have been curious about Gleam, lets talk about it!

Hoping to find somewhere to settle down for a while; not having health insurance is a bit of a drag. I tend to be a bit of an early bird, so try not to let my timezone be a deal breaker. I'm usually awake before most of the east coast US.
