astafrig··on ElementaryUI – Swift, in the Browser
This sentiment is sorely missing from the endless Rust re-writes.
astafrig··on No more icons in every menu by default
For people with a normal screen size, having the click targets be of infinite size is still very useful.
astafrig··on NY announces game ownership bill requiring ownership rather than licensing
Maintaining the same functionality advertised or realised at the time it was purchased.
astafrig··on New Apple TV 4K
The key to what? If you want to have a search box that doesn’t need some setup wizard, then you have to pick a default.

And I think a typical user, generally, would expect that a browser saves history and so on by default. People like AutoFill!

astafrig··on New Apple TV 4K
I’m not sure how much more of an opt-in you could make it than a button you have to click to turn it on.

Again, though, I haven’t set up a Mac fresh in a while.

astafrig··on New Apple TV 4K
> It also contacts google by default for searching, character by character quick search completion

Similarly to the parent comment, I am quite comfortable with Safari sending my search query to Google when I perform a Google search.

I’m not sure how that’s nonsense.

Doesn’t it come up with a notice underneath the box that you have to click ‘Continue’ on to see online results?
astafrig··on America.gov
Cool, but the information on government websites generally meets a higher standard than just ‘making shit up all the time’ so it’s not really a relevant comparison.
astafrig··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
What does being a ‘fanboy’ mean in this context?
astafrig··on Apple Reference Image: A New Approach for Verified Photography
Using the cameras to estimate depth information is not really a better solution than using the LiDAR sensor because the cameras are so close together that the effective range for parallax depth estimation and the effective range of the LiDAR sensor are very similar.
astafrig··on Hackers Stole Flock Camera Software Revealing How Company Tracks Cars and People
> At the same time, about every two minutes, code checked that the camera was still running and logged the message, “Who’s a good boy?!” More than 12,000 of those messages appear in the recovered logs.

I'm not sure why 404 has decided that the number or content of watchdog messages is so significant, but in other coverage of this article, (namely non-technical people making short-form technology 'content'), people seem to be really clinging onto this.

astafrig··on Boot a Virtual iPhone via Apple's Virtualization.framework
In addition to the third-party installation capability mentioned by siblings, Japan also has a regional capability for reassigning the side button to a third-party voice assistant (`com.apple.developer.side-button-access.allow`).
astafrig··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
The only thing Safari seems inferior at is draining batteries.
astafrig··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
If you’re trying to quantify fun, you’ve already well and truly missed the point.
astafrig··on TP-Link Kasa cameras leaked home GPS via unauthenticated UDP for 6 years
Doesn’t it? I do trust the manufacturer of the thing that I keep within arms reach from the moment I get it, and which knows more about me than I do, to have better security than whatever the hell a TUYA is that controls the lights.
astafrig··on Nintendo announces new product revisions in Europe with replaceable batteries
My experience with phones like that are that they tend to fall apart when subjected to impact, which is pretty counterproductive to features like, I don’t know, being able to use the phone immediately after an impact (car crash, fall).
astafrig··on John Deere owners will get the right to repair equipment under FTC settlement
> google's ai says

Copy-pasting AI output is uninteresting and rude.

'Solved' by having measurably worse ingress protection than leading smartphones?
astafrig··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
How do you think that this wouldn't "work in the current timeline"? This sounds like a deep misunderstanding of media.
astafrig··on Railway Blocked by Google Cloud
How is the title misleading?
astafrig··on Six Years Perfecting Maps on WatchOS
Everything involving geography is a regional feature because it takes time to create things for physical stuff across the physical world; its not just some arbitrary limitation like streaming media.
astafrig··on Six Years Perfecting Maps on WatchOS
> no 1st party Apple made hiking and topography map on the Apple Watch

I regularly use hiking and topography maps on my Apple Watch with the first party maps app, so it sure what you’re talking about

astafrig··on Zed 1.0
Some of these are questionable, but 3 and 5 stick out. Being included makes it sound like whoever wrote this list doesn’t really know what Zed is?

It’s a local text editor. The only thing an account gives you is access to their specific flavour of coding agent and a collaboration server.

> If your payment lapses, they reserve the right to delete your account and all associated data with no liability.

Pretty much the only associated data is your payment info.

astafrig··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
> Your statement uses the presence of bugs to indicate a product is worth using.

This is not correct; "If a product is worth using, then it has bugs." (P→Q) does not imply its converse "If a product has bugs, then it is worth using." (Q→P). Buginess is presented as a necessary condition of being worth using, not a sufficient one.

It does, however, imply "If a product has no bugs, then it is not worth using.".

astafrig··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
The thing they “didn’t want to [do]” was infringe on the Linux trademark.
astafrig··on Apple Business
> including a new option coming this summer that will enable businesses in the U.S. and Canada to place local ads in Maps during key search and discovery moments.

The enshittification knows no bounds.

astafrig··on “This is not the computer for you”
What else is a shame is claiming that some single language feature supports a foregone conclusion that the writing's been 'molested'. It's hard to imagine what a constructive comment this could've been with the minimum of effort to know that the author has written this way consistently since at least 2021, before the first public release of ChatGPT.
astafrig··on “This is not the computer for you”
I think this’d be a good comment if it weren’t for the superiority complex :/
astafrig··on “This is not the computer for you”
I’m fairly confident that the Venn diagram of (a) nine-year-olds that are playing with a computer and (b) people who claim that access to kernel source code is a prerequisite to “learning about computers” is two circles that are barely touching.
astafrig··on MacBook Neo
> about money in the bank?

Yes, generally. That's the entire idea behind the stock market.
