astrolx··on AI and the Enclosure of the Scientific Commons
The author is coming from astrophysics where this is not the case. The major publications are operated from learned societies or public entities (RAS in UK, AAS in the US, ESO in Europe etc ...)
astrolx··on Source code of the Estonian online voting system
What elections are you having in mind? Counting should still be open to the public. In small places like embassies they may limit the number of people for security reasons.
astrolx··on Tesla Roadster
That is true above 50 km/h right? In many european cities you drive below that. In many French cities the max speed is even 30 km/h. Then EVs are much quietee.
astrolx··on Tesla Roadster
This will never be allowed to be anywhere near a road I hope.
astrolx··on Iosevka is an open-source, sans-serif and slab-serif monospace font
Ok fair point. I usually try a few stylistic alternative. First time i hear a font go to SS14. I will have a look, thanks
astrolx··on Post About Recreating Adobe Tools Using AI Banned per Adobe Request
Some of the ArtCraft are really nice. As a loooong time linux user for instance, the PDF app is excellent compared to the alternatives. I am really looking forward to more Linux native quality software
astrolx··on Tesla Roadster
In quite a few countries they were rather blank, not like today!
astrolx··on Iosevka is an open-source, sans-serif and slab-serif monospace font
Funny enough I paid for Berkeley Mono but its italic is just not up to it (and particularly not to the price). Iosevka Mono has very nice glyphs but just way too narrow for my taste. JetBrains Mono, IBM Plex Mono (or Lilex) or Roboto Mono just seem to work much better for my tired eyes !
astrolx··on ArXiv's Updated Rate Limit Policy
I think it is a sensible idea, as a matter of fact, I think journals should do it too, maybe even more strict. Because the hike in submission means more burden for the peer-reviewers -- and this work is done (so far) for free.
astrolx··on Dystopian Surveillance Is Becoming a Reality
The legal implications of these devices are just baffling. I see Meta glasses being sold where I live. The law states that you cannot photograph of film people without their consent, even in the street where there are other people around ...

Now it will also be voice recording one has to be aware off ?

Is that the AI future we want or need?

astrolx··on Splash-free urinals (2025)
And those, when they have a target on them (like football theme often seen in pubs in Europe) kinda combine the igNobel prize with the "Nobel" [0] prize on nudge !

[0] not a nobel prize but the prize of the swedish bank in memory of ...

astrolx··on Gmail to end support for "Send as" for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com
Same, for years. Going to move soon to a EU provider though. If anyone has recommendation, happy to listen!
astrolx··on Nebula Sans
Is it that different from Source Sans?
astrolx··on Decathlon Germany adds Wero payment option to decathlon.de website
Really? I frequently use Wero but never installed their app. I use it through my bank application on /e/os
astrolx··on Astronomers may have found the first exomoon
Nice result, but I find they are selling it a bit too much. I'd rather call it an exoplanet (orbiting a brown dwarf orbiting a star).
astrolx··on Astronomers may have found the first exomoon
Exactly. Chile has a special status as host country of the observatory!
astrolx··on GitHub and the crime against software
Hosting forgejo on a cheap Hetzner server is the best and easiest trick that happened in my work life these last years !
astrolx··on Maybe there's a pattern here?
And in France you'd have gotten Clément Ader as reply.
astrolx··on /e/OS is a complete, fully “deGoogled” mobile ecosystem
My phone (Teracube) is running /e/OS now for 2 years. Nearly everything works out of the box (bank apps, e-identity apps etc ..). The only issue I have is that the app I use to take contactless payment on the phone via NFC does not work (while it works using Android).
astrolx··on Statement on the comments from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth
Generally, I am supporting of that move. One thing leaves me non-plussed as a non-USA citizen, "the mass domestic surveillance of Americans" exception. That means that Claude can still be used for mass surveillance of everybody else on the planet right?
astrolx··on Even the Mars Rover Uses Zip Ties (2021)
Can confirm, I've put tens of zip ties on a Mars lander, and in other science instruments!
astrolx··on The Mongol Khans of Medieval France
Baudolino from Umberto Eco (an excellent book) is partially about that, I recommend the read !
astrolx··on France's homegrown open source online office suite
I think an unsung hero in making open source broadly known and adopted in France is Framasoft [https://framasoft.org/en/], a non-profit association. They have since many many years an initiative to de-google internet and provide free and hosted alternatives and resources.
astrolx··on France Aiming to Replace Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.
Judging by the amount of people who still suck at Zoom or Teams after 6 years ... I am not that sure :)
astrolx··on France Aiming to Replace Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.
I work at a French research institute and our Zoom contract ends soon so we get to switch to Visio. It's not too bad but quite tier below Zoom. Noise cancellation is not great, being browser based also comes with limitations, in half my meetings people don't manage to find the permissions to allow mic and/or webcam ...
astrolx··on Instabridge has acquired Nova Launcher
After many years of Nova, switched to Olauncher. I'm a happy person.

> It might be dumb, but at least it's expensive.

Just realizing that the reverse could be a selling point for a phone here: It might be expensive, but at least it's dumb.

astrolx··on 'Block Everything' protests sweep across France, scores arrested
After a long day out that started early, I can tell you that our riot police has no budget issues!
astrolx··on 'Block Everything' protests sweep across France, scores arrested
"The math".

We don't have issue with the math, we just disagree on what to fund to balance things out.

An example, 200+ billion euros are given yearly to large companies as tax breaks and the like, without the government asking anything in return. The senate had a report about it recently [https://www.publicsenat.fr/actualites/economie/un-cout-annue...].

Another example, the military and defense get a huge increase in budget. schools, hospitals, research, nearly every public service get a budget cut instead [ https://www.force-ouvriere.fr/non-aux-44-milliards-d-economi...].
