attheodo··on Ask HN: What was an interesting project you started and finished over a weekend?
Spent some time in an apartment with shady WiFi, dropped connections and frequent disconnects.

I built a macOS menubar app that just... pings: https://github.com/attheodo/Pingu

attheodo··on Ask HN: What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I managed to tell my dad how good of a father he was to me and how much I appreciated everything he gave me and taught me... one day before he passed away. An honest deposit like this isn't as easy as it sounds.
attheodo··on Show HN: PSequel – a free PostgreSQL GUI Tool for Mac OS X
UI looks promising but unfortunately performance was sluggish. Will have it under my radar for future, for now sticking to pgcommander.
attheodo··on Ask HN: I've learned a programming language – how do I solve problems with code?
Don't think too far. Find a problem of your own, your family or friends and try to solve it. Best chance is that if you have it, someone else might have it too.
attheodo··on Ask HN: Dev promoted to more strategic role in startup. What literature?
"Strategic Management" Fred David, http://amzn.com/0132664232

Some people find it too academic but it covers pretty much all of the essentials of strategy and business policy practices.

attheodo··on Poll: Would you take $10M now or start your own company?
Basic principle of finance: "A dollar today, is worth more than a dollar tomorrow"
attheodo··on The Heartbleed Challenge
perfect attempt to steal 0day spl0its :P
attheodo··on Ask HN: Site with tools people use?

attheodo··on Ask HN: Advice on how to best spend $3,000
You paid over $4k for a logo and you don't know what to do with $3k? Oh boy.. I'd say spend them all on a bullish equity and get a good ol' day job
attheodo··on Simple Universal Time
Is it only me or this sounds like a terrible idea? Maybe it will eventually be more productive but during the transition phase, there'll be mayhem. Not to mention all the unusable clocks, hardware etc that'll have to be completely scraped.
attheodo··on Ask HN: What is your favorite company-specific engineering blog?
Instagram's and AirBnb's are some of the good ones..
attheodo··on Ask HN: Is there a Hacker News/Reddit-like open source platform?
HN is also an open-source demo of the Arc language https://github.com/wting/hackernews
attheodo··on Ask HN: Help me get my life back.
If you want my humble opinion my friend, you're pretty much fine. Your addiction is quite bearable and you seem to have a pretty structured routine which is a luxury for most of people. Maybe get some more exercice and relax... everyone goes through some bad times every once in a while. Keep calm and keep hustling... everything is fine..
attheodo··on Looking for Testers for a New Bookmarking Service Idea
Hey, looks like a good approach on a problem indeed. One tip though... try to eliminate at least half of the copy in your landing page. Add more bold headlines and limit the paragraphs to 2-3 lines max.
attheodo··on Helios
Mobile backends is definitely a hot topic nowadays and this is one of the greatest contributions. A small part of me wishes it was a more "Pythonic" though.. :)
attheodo··on Is Facebook testing a new Tab Bar UI for its iOS app?
Highly unlikely. How did you manage to get this screenshot if not made-up in the first place?
attheodo··on Why aren't you commenting your code?
As mentioned in Clean Code, beautifully and concisely code doesn't need much of commenting. It's pretty much self-explained.
attheodo··on Ask HN: What is a "developer evangelist"?
e·van·ge·list: A person who seeks to convert others to the Christian faith, esp. by preaching.

Where "Christian" you can put whichever company grows along with it's API/code/lib usage and utilization by others.

As I see it it's a purely "hype" role and it's essentially a tech-aware marketeer seeking to attract fellow developers and engineers to work and experiment with his company's platform and products.

attheodo··on Would E-mail work as a "simple" internal messaging system for my app?
If it should be "simple" and internal, no it wouldn't fit well. I wouldn't recommend it for any type of in-app communication actually. Depending on the architecture of the app you're about to build I pretty sure there are tons of more reliable and scalable solutions.
attheodo··on Ask HN: how did you learn the command line?
Ultimately, the best and proper way to be a console master is to install a Unix distribution on your one and only everyday machine and avoid any sorts of X or Window manager at all.
attheodo··on Ask HN: Review my startup
Definitely add some screenshots if you have any
attheodo··on Alexander The Great's Battle at the River Jhelum
His hometown is close to were I live. I've visited his father's, Philipos, tomb at Vergina. Massive structure, loads of gold, really impressive. Sometime they have to find Alexander's tomb too... it still remains an unexplored mystery.
attheodo··on Ask HN: How do you talk to potential customers?
I'd say get a chance to personally interview them. Invite them to dinner, grab a beer/coffee with them. Make it friendly and casual. Always give them some sorts of carrot for their time... Surveys are too formal and impersonal. They're also easily skippable cause make people bored. Emails too. I'd say personal meeting or phone call.
attheodo··on Ask HN: Things to consider when hiring your first developer
Some quick thoughts: - If you have product, your first developer should at least be familiar with your technology stack. 2-3 years hands on experience should be a must imho. Avoid arguments like "He looks like a smart dude, he'll pick up things along the way" - Not sure how it's done in your country but at least provide a tidy and accessible workspace, equipment of choice as well as insurance coverage. Not to mention a descent salary. - You should look for someone who gets the job done. Not a crazy scientist, not someone who perfectly explains theories, not someone with a jaw-dropping CV. You need things done, within deadlines. Whatever things it might be, so yeah he should be able to get his hands dirty with various stuff not only the one, two things he mentions in his CV. But again, it's not sane to find the perfect generalist.
attheodo··on Ask HN: I need a strategy advice please
I think the best solution is to release the first version and only scratch the surface about the marketplace. Do not directly hint about it. Maybe the early feedback of the first users will give you an idea of whether they want a marketplace in the first place or other major design/market directions you might want to follow to please them before spending time and money on something you're probably unsure will work.
attheodo··on Ask HN: Why is C so heavily used/highly ranked?
Most of the UNIX ecosystem (*BSDs, Linux, etc) is solely developed using C. In addition to that, most embedded operating systems and real-time applications that require heavy interaction with the hardware use the C programming language because it's versatile and low-level.
attheodo··on Ask HN: Why am I never happy?
This is probably what most people call "perfectionism". I myself have this... "curse", if you want. It's perfectly normal to think that every piece of your work is not the best thing, cause by doing it you get a tiny little better, which for perfectionists is enough to look back and judge strictly. Learn to accept some little things here and there once in a while just to maintain normal levels for free time and sanity. :)
attheodo··on My final note to the love of my life
There's a saying in Greece my friend: "The are always more orange trees that make oranges"
attheodo··on Mega has launched
And embraces flat design apparently :p
