atticora··on The baffling intelligence of a single cell: The story of E. coli chemotaxis
There's a nice discussion of this in Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!

> I discovered a very strange phenomenon: I could ask a question, which the students would answer immediately. But the next time I would ask the question – the same subject, and the same question, as far as I could tell – they couldn’t answer it at all!

> Then I say, “The main purpose of my talk is to demonstrate to you that no science is being taught in Brazil!”

atticora··on Bug Thread
Hey this is a good stackoverflow answer, why can't I upvote it? Oh.
atticora··on Ask HN: Developers, what was your 'Eureka ' moment in coding?
Learning to use a REPL. It's been at the core of my coding practice since. Especially using it as a debugger in an interpreted language was a game changer for me. It converts programming into a fast interactive game.
atticora··on A woman bought a vintage dress. It had a secret pocket with a mysterious note
Is the code for the weather report at all similar to the one for "help I am a prisoner in a vintage dress factory"?
atticora··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
I aim higher.
atticora··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
It depends. I've been coding for a living for 41 years and have a feeling I'll get the hang of it real soon now.
atticora··on From 2007 to 2017 US age 10-14 suicide rate tripled, quadrupled for girls
The first-generation iPhone was announced in January 2007. As of November 2018 more than 2.2 billion iPhones had been sold. The child suicide rate topped out when the cell phone market became saturated. Hardly proof but it would be interesting to see suicide statistics broken out by cell phone use.
atticora··on Coding Self-Attention, Multi-Head Attention, Cross-Attention, Causal-Attention

conscious, kŏn′shəs, adjective -- Characterized by or having an awareness of one's environment and one's own existence, sensations, and thoughts. synonym: aware.
Self-attention seems to be at least a proxy for "awareness of ... one's own existence." If that closed loop is the thing that converts sensibility into sentience, then maybe it's the source of LLM's leverage too. Is this language comprehension algorithm a sort of consciousness algorithm?
atticora··on VR Game Revolution? New VR Technology Promises Game Titles
No mention of how this can translate smooth motion without VR sickness. Perhaps its a revolution for the people who can tolerate it.
atticora··on DevDocs
This is a very frustrating app for me. It is one of the best document sources out there but has become unusable because it cannot retain my selection of documentation. Almost every other time I visit I have to start from scratch picking the stack I use. It's great but not great enough to keep doing that over and over and over ...

I don't have an issue with dropping cookies or local storage elsewhere. I'm on an updated linux chrome. Any ideas?

atticora··on Cancer Is Striking More Young People, and Doctors Are Alarmed and Baffled
I agree with that paleo approach to diet, and your conclusions. In my case my gastroparesis prevents me from eating any significant amount of fiber and diabetes II from eating many carbs. Meat is what's left. I tolerate beef best so eat it the most.

I think that the ease of digestion and my health improvements are evidence that this is an eating pattern that we're well adapted to.

atticora··on Show HN: I made an extension to keep Twitter from losing my scroll position
Hey that works! Thanks!
atticora··on Reddit should show upvotes and downvotes separately
So should Hacker News. As is a comment with 2 up and 0 down votes looks the same as one with 102 up 100 down.
atticora··on Show HN: I made an extension to keep Twitter from losing my scroll position
What I really want is an extension that will let me open a retweet by right clicking and opening it in new tab. That way I don't lose my scroll position and can get a collection of things I want to read. I went looking for such a thing but couldn't find it.

I did find Control Panel for Twitter though, which is a great improvement.

atticora··on Cancer Is Striking More Young People, and Doctors Are Alarmed and Baffled
> The important factors with meat consumption are: 1) how they're prepared ('low and slow' is the best method of cooking, i.e., at a relatively low temperature and for a relatively long time in order to avoid creation of AGE's and trans-fats)

I daily eat beef that has been cooked by sous-vide at 155F for 48 hours and then crisp up in an air fryer at 400F for 20 minutes. Is this over doing it with regards to carcinogen production?

atticora··on The purpose of a system is what it does
My car moves me from point to point and emits carbon monoxide. It would be nonsense to claim that the purpose of my car is to emit carbon monoxide.
atticora··on Analysis of 200M newspaper pages: Sentiment has collapsed over the past 50 years

Fighting the media negativity bias, the local Russian newspaper City Reporter decided in 2014 to report only positive news for a day and lost two-thirds of its readers.
It's hard to blame a business for failing to commit financial suicide on principle. You can, but that's like blaming water for falling from the sky.
atticora··on Analysis of 200M newspaper pages: Sentiment has collapsed over the past 50 years
Here's a PDF of the paper: https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w32026/w320...
atticora··on Analysis of 200M newspaper pages: Sentiment has collapsed over the past 50 years
Cosmologists discuss gravitational collapse that takes place over billions of years.

atticora··on Israeli group claims it’s using back channels to censor “inflammatory” content
That was fast! Are you notified on keywords or just happened by? It seems like an LLM assistant could make this task much easier.
atticora··on YouTube Bans True Crime Videos That Reanimate Dead Children with AI
I disagree. AI is becoming an increasingly important tool for telling stories, and making it harder to tell stories about true crimes and dead children is not a good thing. We need our full range of tools to think about and communicate about these horrors, as much as for anything else.
atticora··on X Purges Prominent Journalists, Leftists with No Explanation
Ackman went after Gay for permitting Harvard antisemitism, which didn't get her removed. Others went after her for plagiarism, which led to her resignation. So other others went after Ackman's wife for plagiarism as a way to hurt the others. Ackman declared that family was out of bounds and that he will retaliate by doing a plagiarism review of the whole MIT faculty and the journalists who went after his wife.

If this conflagration continues ... it may have a positive effect on reducing plagiarism. But since LLMs can easily reword text, the plagiarism wars are more about the past than the future. Because now the plagiarism of concepts rather than phrases is cheap and easy and far less detectable.

Perhaps plagiarism review can move to detection of shared sequences of concepts rather than words.

atticora··on Cells across the body talk to each other about aging
Since a given niche can only support a given population size, aging reduces generation time by hitting a ceiling on population size. Some organisms get around this by spawning thousands of offspring and all but approximately one fails fast.

So that's an available trade-off. Increase individual age limits, but maintain adaptation rates by letting many immature individuals compete and die before maturity. Like spermatozoa and tadpoles.

atticora··on Supreme Court rejects appeal by Elon Musk's X on disclosing federal surveillance
classified
atticora··on Cells across the body talk to each other about aging
> Then it dawned on me that the survival of the species is not aligned with the survival of an individual.

The selfish genes control, and their survival is not perfectly aligned with either the individual or the species. If aging becomes too slow, adaptation slows, and successful genes become more rare and their propagation slows. Genes are replicators, replicators need turn-over to replicate, and greater age means slower turn-over.

It may be that the advent of cultural replicators have decreased the optimal turn-over rate of genetic replicators, but they don't know that.

atticora··on Supreme Court rejects appeal by Elon Musk's X on disclosing federal surveillance
Thanks for trying, X.

... argued that the federal government’s prohibition on the company disclosing the exact number of receipts of national security-related requests for surveillance of users was unconstitutional, and should be granted only in exceptional cases
It seems wrong to prevent reporting not just of the particulars of the surveillance but on the scale of it as well. It hides important perspective from the voters more than it protects national security. Or perhaps it's an attempt to protect the security apparatus from the voters.
atticora··on Peregrine moon lander suffers anomaly after launch
Unfortunately it's very easy to find people who agree with the non-ironic reading of this and are fully aware that it is incompatible with any notion of a limit to democracy or state power.
atticora··on [dead]
If his pharmaceutical regimen has contributed to his accomplishments in the last six years, I'd like a copy.
atticora··on Canada Blocks Citizenship for Russian Conviction for Criticizing Ukrainian War
I think this is a terrible injustice, but can still see why, when a guest is poking at a very large angry bear from inside of your house, you might not want her to stay.
