auspiv··on I didn't know I was lacking in Vitamin D until I collapsed at work
it is very hard to take too much vitamin D
auspiv··on The US added a record 20.2 GWh of battery storage in just 3 months
0.8% of electricity can be very critical MWs or MWhs.. rounding to 1% is 87.6 hours of electricity. could be the top 1% of prices, or grid stability, or some other grid event where having batteries able to instantly supply tens to hundreds to thousands of MW is worth a ton of $$$ and also huge increases in grid stability.

recall batteries do not generate electricity, they store it for when it is needed most.

auspiv··on Gemini 4 Carbon is the new #1 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5
well if there was any doubt about why openweight models were ranking lower on every iteration of the benchmarks... this should remove all doubt. to just flat out remove is very overt
auspiv··on Submarine cable resilience
starlink sats are some of the lowest orbiting satellites in space - 330-370km for v3. this helps latency as well as easy deorbit at end of life. the v3 sats have multiple 400 gbps lasers for meshing... I can't decide if your comment is sarcasm or not actually because starlink is fully functional and doesn't have any of those issues
auspiv··on Intel D270 GPU AI Accelerator–Up to 480 GB LPDDR5X
This is a very low number for a server GPU. My V100 from 2017 is 0.9 TB/s.

A single B300 has almost 8 TB/s.

AMD MI300x from 2023 is 5.3 TB/s

Edit: my bad you are saying that this is an impressive number precisely because it is more or less normal RAM, not VRAM

auspiv··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
someone else picked up that bit of math and has run with it and has refined it downwards multiple times. believe it is now in the range of 2^-18 or so
auspiv··on Pi.dev: You Said No MCP
also consider oh-my-pi. it is much more "batteries included" than Pi
auspiv··on GLM Built Its Own Inference Infrastructure
And exactly how many tokens (please do the breakdown for prefill vs decode) does a Claude $20/month plan include?
auspiv··on Mercury 2.5
This team is in a tough spot - they'll need to innovate and get their models in a good spot quickly. They are racing the clock against various similarly sized models being burned into ASICs and running at a similar speed (or faster).
auspiv··on Saving 100 terabytes of memory by optimizing 1.1.1.1's DNS cache
I think the question is probably more along the lines of - why not do a database with 100 TB of storage/records instead of a cache? tomato / tomato.. especially with smart caching in front of database. 100TB of flash is a good bit cheaper than 100TB of memory
auspiv··on Accelerating GPT-5.6 Sol Ultrafast
I'd take qwen3.6 (3.8 as of tomorrow) 27B running at 17k per second first on the way to Sol/Fable! And then dsv4-flash-0731!
auspiv··on Qwen3.8-2.4T
Opus 4.5 level of performance is also accessible with deepseek-v4-flash-0731 (0731 being the july 31 update) which is much, much, much smaller. 2x RTX pro 6000 blackwell can run it. 4x can run it very comfortably

Modern dell desktops (like 8th gen+) idle around 10W. Raspberry pi isn’t saving much

Well when a huge part of potential revenue is all in on Bedrock... you need the harness to be able to talk to Bedrock. And Vertex. And all the other places these models are hosted. And allow for proxy because many businesses do not all direct internet access... all valid business reasons.
auspiv··on ECC and DDR5
This is/was classic market segmentation. Want ECC? Pay up for Xeon (server/workstation CPU)
auspiv··on Migrating a production AI agent to GPT-5.6: 2.2x faster, 27% cheaper
Statistically speaking if each part of the Luna run has a 90% chance of being correct, 5 of those is 0.9^5 = 0.59 = 59%. Or one Sol run being maybe 95% correct? Exact numbers vary of course. But then again having sol verify at end may be cheaper.
auspiv··on Anthropic's Method to Losing Goodwill in a Few Easy Steps
you don't. they are distinct entities. https://platform.claude.com -> api keys
auspiv··on Chevron signs 20-year power agreement with Microsoft for West Texas data center
The current natural gas price in West Texas (the WaHa hub, north of Coyanosa, TX) is negative. And has been for a while. The price peaked (dipped?) to -$9/MCF a couple months ago. That means gas producers had to pay $9 per MCF for it to be taken away. Oil in the Permian comes with gas, a lot of it, so to produce oil, you need to get rid of gas. Wells I'm familiar with have 4000-5000 cubic feet of gas per barrel of oil. Recall in oilfield M = thousand, so that's 4-5 MCF per bbl of oil.

There is no free gas pipeline capacity to get gas out of West Texas. Any time new pipelines are built, they are filled within months.

This makes a ton of sense for oil producers (which are also gas producers) who can sell their gas for less of a loss (potentially a profit!) and also for MSFT who can lock in long term contracts for minimal cost. I'd guess these contracts are for $1-2/MCF which is win/win for the oil companies in the area and MSFT.

auspiv··on Claude Code – Everything You Can Configure That the Docs Don't Tell You
Wow, not one mention of the env vars that have a far greater influence on how the models actually work under the hood - https://code.claude.com/docs/en/env-vars

Very important for bedrock deployments and other not-as-standard deployments

Key for how I've deployed it - disable adaptive thinking, max thinking tokens, disable telemetry, etc

auspiv··on GPT-5.5 Price Increase: What It Costs
GPT-5.5 is a solid leap with Codex or other harnesses. Opus 4.7 I still don't understand how people use... I tried it for a day or two, have tried it for a few hours every week or so since release, and still use 4.6 as daily driver (with xhi thinking).

auspiv··on A macOS bug that causes TCP networking to stop working after 49.7 days
probably same thing for boeing 787 jets - https://www.theregister.com/2020/04/02/boeing_787_power_cycl...

auspiv··on Embarrassingly simple self-distillation improves code generation
apparently you can straight up duplicate/add/rearrange layers without changing any of the weights and get better results as well - https://dnhkng.github.io/posts/rys/
auspiv··on Qwen3-Max-Thinking
There have been a couple "studies" and comparing various frontier-tier AIs that have led to the conclusion that Chinese models are somewhere around 7-9 months behind US models. Other comment says that Opus will be at 5.2 by the time Qwen matches Opus 4.5. It's accurate, and there is some data to show by how much.
auspiv··on Building a 25 Gbit/s workstation for the SCION Association
Wow, 249 CHF for 8x fans is insane. The grip Noctua has on people! Nice workstation.
auspiv··on Stop Doom Scrolling, Start Doom Coding: Build via the terminal from your phone
Using this with tmux and various VPN tech. Main issue is scrolling. Termius + tmux don't scroll very well. And I've been led to believe tmux is necessary to keep sessions open when I turn off my phone screen
