avanwyk··on SQLite should have (Rust-style) editions
I'm not critiquing your opinion, but could you please elaborate? I don't know Rust, but I just had a conversation on why I think it might have a niche in the enterprise.
avanwyk··on Show HN: Opening lines of famous literary works
The exact same thing happened to me. I re-read The Gunslinger a decade after my first read, and somehow found it even worse.

For a long time I refused to read King, but I've since read Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary and The Shining and all were great.

avanwyk··on Phoenix LiveView 1.2
I've built several production quality, mid-sized apps in Phoenix/Elixir over the last year using Claude Code (CC). In my experience, it's great, I had better results with this stack than I had with Django when using purely CC. It's token efficient (because of code generator), has great static analysis, and terse (because functional). Phoenix even generates an Agents.md The apps themselves are highly scalable and look great.

Checkout https://github.com/oliver-kriska/claude-elixir-phoenix (not me).

avanwyk··on New arXiv policy: 1-year ban for hallucinated references
We got pretty far without a single hallucinated citation (because they simply didn't exist). It's really simple: check your references, or don't bother of publishing. It's not a high hurdle.
avanwyk··on Google Cloud fraud defense, the next evolution of reCAPTCHA
I get this all the time with Brave, and especially in Private Windows. It's the number one reason I don't use Google Search anymore. I've used Brave search for a while, what do you use? Do you have a way to prevent the captchas?
avanwyk··on 81yo Dodgers fan can no longer get tickets because he doesn't have a smartphone
This is a strong disagree from me. What this is implying is that the customer now has to buy into two ecosystems: the expensive, Dodgers, tickets, and stadium world; and the far more perilous, casino in your pocket, attention sucking, hell, that's smartphones. Countless articles are being written on the effect of smartphones on the elderly (and teens). But you know what? Fuck'em. Because progress.

Another comment suggested grandfathering in customers like this. Sure, that's one idea. But generally, don't punish the masses because of the crimes of the few.

I'm certain VIPs don't scan their phones when they come to the game. This man is nothing short of a VIP.

avanwyk··on Show HN: I built a frontpage for personal blogs
I wouldn't even call this a regression. Hand curated and edited feels like the future I want right now.
avanwyk··on An Opinionated Agentic Engineering Workflow
I've built with GSD, and experimented with rolling my own. I think GSD is good if you don't know exactly what you want to build, but you only have a vague idea. However, if the opposite is true (and I believe it should be), then GSD has a lot of overhead, and costs a lot of tokens. Subjectively, my GSD apps looked very much like AI slop (the app itself, not the code), and felt soulless.

Did you try out DuckDB?

I need to get back to writing avanwyk.com
avanwyk··on I switched from VSCode to Zed
Others have echoed the same, but I also switched from VSCode to Zed, but then put in the effort to learn Neovim (Lazyvim) properly, and I haven't looked back. Writing code feels exciting again. I recommend something like https://github.com/adomokos/Vim-Katas to accelerate muscle memory. And also Vimium in the browser is great.
avanwyk··on Never write your own date parsing library
I can't believe this is such a controversial take. Solving hard things by yourself is growth. I 100% agree, rather solve a hard solved problem yourself than learning yet another JS framework or launching yet another revenue losing SaaS ("successful" because of VC). Or whatever. Push hard boundaries.
avanwyk··on Show HN: Free mortgage analysis tool to avoid getting screwed by closing costs
This is great. Really good work. This looks really useful, and I think you did a great job on the interface and site in general. I hope you aren't discouraged by the other commenters, keep hacking!
