avgDev··on Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880
Difficult to deal with an electric semi that is on fire. For cars we have baths.

The fire from the batteries lasts hours, which is a huge issue for everyone else and the fire departments.

avgDev··on Tesla cancels Cybertruck in Australia and NZ after 7 years of deposits
You should see the storage in my Honda Pilot.
avgDev··on Code is clay now
I wrote complete systems that run businesses today. I understood every single line of code.

I'm not sure your experience is the norm.

avgDev··on IKEA – 3D Guide
It would help if it didn't provide incorrect instructions lol.
avgDev··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
Towns would just have their own News/Events sections. I don't think FB is the right place for it.
avgDev··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
It is crazy to me that a lot of towns have literally switched to engaging people on FB. Not only are they at mercy of FB, but there are a lot of insane people on FB. Often people who are not even members of the community comment and see those posts. Towns can't delete comments.

I cannot wait until this whole FB trends ends. I want RSS feeds or blogs. Businesses should have their own basic websites that serve their needs.

avgDev··on Ask HN: How to deal with shipping AI-written code you don't understand?
Nothing a "make no mistakes" at the end of a query cannot fix. /s
avgDev··on Things to know when you get cancer
Yep.

I've had a lisfranc injury, which while not life threatening is very serious and the quicker the surgery is done, the better outcomes.

My podiatrist did X-Rays incorrectly, I told her I'm seeking 2nd opinion just to confirm her findings. I've found a guy that specializes in lisfranc at Rush. He performed correct weight bearing x-rays. It was a bad sprain and not a torn ligament. It took 12 months to completely heal but I was walking mostly normally after 4 months.

Always SEEK 2nd and 3rd opinion if it is something serious. You can also "find" algorithms use for diagnosing and treating suspected condition to make sure your physician is up to speed.

Not all physicians are equal. They also deal with burn out, and have better and worse days.

avgDev··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years
I live in a suburb by a major city in the US, and know so many neighbors. The sense of community is really strong. I help my neighbors remove snow and take their trash out as they are old.

I feel like some people are just making assumptions or are extremely introverted.

avgDev··on Apple Keynote now showing ads in its UI
I still feel like iPhones are good devices, but yeah apple is going down hill.

I also get a lot of life out of MacBooks, they have been pretty reliable for me.

avgDev··on Firefox Enterprise
Same. I did not know anything like this existed and I've been tinkering with PCs and building them for 3 decades.
avgDev··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
Because it is not that easy. I used LLMs daily, I still need to write code and debug.

My boss has his own work to do.

avgDev··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
Nobody says it does. However, if I am solving big business problems and making enough to justify a private cook, why wouldn't I do that to optimize and focus on my area of expertise?

I don't want to be a code monkey. I want to talk to business people and come up with solutions. I don't care if LLM writes most of it or a junior dev...well I do LLM is better.

avgDev··on Programming Isn't Special
If I were a chef some of my stuff is definitely art, basically spaghetti.
avgDev··on Programming Isn't Special
I like solving problems but getting working code was a dopamine hit. Now, just knowing I could use AI to generate code, solve a problem, somehow took away that hit I used to get from writing working code. All I have left now, is solving business problems.
avgDev··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
Sony is barely making money on PS5 hardware.
avgDev··on ChatGPT Pro 500
I would rather use a skilled dev + AI. As dev I am more likely to learn from AI, as it is better at explaining concepts than devs fresh out of school.
avgDev··on ChatGPT Pro 500
I've talked to VP at my company and we both agreed $1000 for the time saved, is still 'worth it'.

Dev salaries are high and devs often have to realign buttons or change colors. We are not always working on complex ideas.

I rewrote a big piece of software from scratch....it had 0 docs. Documenting of classes and flow took me weeks. Complete rewrite took almost 2 years. I am confident that with AI I would be able to get this done in a few months.

avgDev··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
One could also pay for a usenet provider, this is much better than p2p. You pay a monthly fee and the usenet provider hosts all the linux distros :) one might desire. You just download and never distribute.

Once you set it up with Sonarr and Radarr and Plex/Jellyfin you will never go back to HBO, Netflix, blah blah blah blah.

avgDev··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
Oof. I guess sailing the high sees is back on the table.

We are back to cable pricing, but shows and movies are all over the place and now we need multiple apps to track us.

avgDev··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
Accurate.

I've wrote a rather large system that runs a medium business, solo. When a bug pops up, I feel unfamiliar with the code. It was all written by hand with 0 LLM usage.

It is normal to feel this way. However, I am still very capable of resolving the issues in a timely manner. Adding any new big features is a big undertaking and usually involves a lot of refactoring to fix the dumb decisions I've made.

avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
Fair point!

I would call 4 local structural engineers to you. Ask about price. Inspection and report is about $700-$2000. You just go with someone who feels right for you. Still cheaper than $40k concrete job, so not as much of a deal.

avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
I'm open to leaving voicemails. If I hear "hello, this is Bob from Bob's Concrete, I'm on a job leave a detailed message and I will get back to you", that guy is likely to get my job, even if he is a bit more.
avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
I got quotes first which was the wrong approach. I ended up taking photos and detailing what I want on plat of survey. I also consulted a structural engineer(for garage cracks) and researched using rebar, fiber mesh, and metal mesh.

So, basically I know what I want and it is easier to get quotes this way. I just send the docs and dimensions.

avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
I'm looking for a contractor to do my concrete. 2 companies had AI agents. Instant no thank you, I'm just going to go with a guy that still answers his phone.
avgDev··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
I use AI to produce code. Outside of code, and getting information I need to complete tasks IRL, I'm moving more and more away from the internet.

The golden era of nerd filled internet is over. Now, even nerd parts of the internet are getting filled with AI slop and marketing.

I barely do social media, and mostly HN. I will probably just do some more nerd stuff IRL where I can meet people. I text and call people more.

I actually think AI will cause people to do more in real life because it degrades the value of the internet in general.

avgDev··on How to write an effective software design document
I cowboyed a lot of projects, then 2 years later a feature is not working as expected. It is.

Good docs, signed off by stake holders is essential. It basically covers you the dev, and confirms everyone involved agrees on what the software will do in certain situations.

avgDev··on Measuring the sloppiness of code
I encountered bugs created by AI. No matter how many times it tried it could not fix the bug, it was introducing so much slop to work around the issue.

I finally gave up and read documentation for 15 minutes and solved the problem.

I will never push AI generated code to production without understanding it, and this is why I only generate small code snippets and copy/paste most of the time.

avgDev··on Measuring the sloppiness of code
Writing code at enterprise level is insanely difficult. You are constrained by budget, staff, legacy databases/environments, business rules hiding all over the place, and people.

You can't just rewrite everything. So over many years people are touching small parts of the pie.

If it works it isn't low quality.

avgDev··on The asteroid currently hitting front end web development
I have a blazor app in poduction, Codex made errors which it could not fix and it required me reading documentation. I won't argue that it didn't make my life simpler, tasks which would take me days are done in hours, sometimes without touching code.
