awakeasleep··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
Agree with you, but want to say trucks are really for towing. To haul you want a trailer.

For example the f150 is rated for 1.2 tons, the 250 1.3 to 1.8 depending on configuration. gotta go to f350 for an 8 ton configuration.

For people who don't think about this often, imagine four 200lb guys riding in the cab of the f150. It's already a third of it's payload capacity at that point. Can't fit too many bags of cement in after that.

Of course this is moot in comparison to a minivan which has a payload capacity of about 3/4 ton. You’ll be over capacity in the minivan if you have a 175lb person on each seat.

awakeasleep··on Residential proxies detected on White House network
The industry is dirty but people would ABSOLUTELY host a residential proxy in exchange for free tv/movies.

It'd be an instant "yes" from everyone making under 80k a year and for many making more.

You're going to need a mountain of research to prove you can separate fun from creativity/novelty.
awakeasleep··on Anthropic trained Claude on illegally obtained Stanford professors' books
That professor saying that the use of work he already produced amounts to "slave labor"... copyright infringement is substantially different than slavery.
awakeasleep··on Glymphatic clearance to alleviate brain edema and Alzheimer's pathology in mice
The idea of getting a brain cleaning like this sounds so appealing to me

brother your ideological jibber jabber is blinding you to some truly incredible feats of engineering that are happening right now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunnel_and_Reservoir_Plan
awakeasleep··on Degraded availability for GitHub Actions, GitHub Pages and Webhooks
Even without out the free stuff, no one in this thread seems to have experience managing a self-hosted git environment in even a medium sized company.

It is also constant outages, and then it's your job to diagnose and fix it- and the technical work of that is the easiest part.

It's broken because a team figured out a new way to abuse the company's git infra to get around some process or limitation, and now you have to argue with their manager and then their director about why their team needs to stop using your VCS as a docker registry or whatever.

awakeasleep··on Florida's HOAs and condo associations are making the housing crisis worse
To your “happily collect taxes at full rate” comment, strongtowns.org’s whole message is that only the densest cities in the country bring in enough taxes to pay for the maintenance of streets, sewers etc.

“Full rate” is almost always subsidized through the windfall taxes on new growth and development, putting towns in a ponzi scheme like situation.

awakeasleep··on Cyberattack halts construction of tunnel between Denmark and Germany
I don't have any insight into this situation, but I feel like the incentives to blame Russia for any problem must be tremendous.

It's a perfect 'get out of jail free' card for any sufficiently complicated screw up.

awakeasleep··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
We're discussing this in the context of Microsoft and other organizations large enough to employ double digit percentages of all H1B visa immigrants to the USA.

The quirks of individual managers don't matter in this context.

awakeasleep··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
This is not a management perspective.

awakeasleep··on Gemini 4 Argon
If you dig in the settings you can control that. Like on a remote ssh connection, in the settings, you can pick “friendly or terse”

In the local app interface the winning choice is “efficient” and then turn off the sliders for warmth enthusiasm emoji etc.

It makes openai models so good to talk to i really have trouble switching.

awakeasleep··on What would a serious AI product look like?
I have been dwelling on the "No First-Person Output" problem.

I fully agree with the author's point that it's an incoherent interface for a tool. But more than that, it's a constant irritating reminder to me that these LLMs aren't actually thinking or synthesizing new ideas. The LLM is fundamentally not a person, and does not have a human's context, so representing itself with human pronouns and speech patterns is fundamentally contradictory and inaccurate. Author gets into that with the apologies, but once you start noticing it, it's everywhere.

If these programs were actually capable of thinking, and committed to veractiy, they would represent themselves in a new way, and it would be insightful and interesting. We the users wouldn't have comfortable and misleading language masking the 'alien intelligence' and it would be a weird adjustment, but we would be adjusting instead of pretending.

awakeasleep··on The addiction of online sports gambling: "Like crack in the '80s"
You can say it, but if you want anyone to take you seriously, specify which definition of addictive you’re using.

No one is going to argue with “psychologically addictive”

awakeasleep··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
I’m worried your cynicism is overwhelming your capacity for rational thought.

Years of his life and 5-10% of his net worth. That’s the kind of thing people notice.

awakeasleep··on Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows
I pray for the possibility of not only choosing the provider, but being able to choose the thinking level.

I've been using the new siri, and it seems more or less stuck in instant-answer mode, which gives really terrible answers with any provider.

I wish more people were talking about this, but if you can't crank up the models to extended thinking, the technology is more or less stuck at 2004 levels of usefulness.

awakeasleep··on Reverse engineering my e-scooter and rewriting the firmware in Rust
I’m suspicious of this vision because for example, with battery packs, cells with compatible voltage and size have vastly different characteristics.

Those characteristics, like safe discharge rate, capacity, projected cycle count, are all things that manufactures exaggerate or get wrong.

I don’t think there’s any way that consumers can ever be informed enough to have an efficient market in products such as those
