azepoi··on Radiation link in flight attendant's breast cancer, French court finds
Up until 2004 you had to book a non-smoking rail-car in France. I remember having to book a seat in the smoking section because the non-smoking cars were full. Smoking was only being phased-out in high-school yards (for 15-18 yo highschoolers not only the staff)
azepoi··on Hanoi’s humble beer glass and the memory of a nation
The glasses remind me of Duralex Picardie glasses which are also a classic in France. The tall 36cl and 58cl versions look very similar.
azepoi··on The One Dollar Counterfeiter
It reminds me of Bojarski https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceslaw_Bojarski

azepoi··on Heat pump sales rise across Europe
It goes by license plate codes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_vehicle_registra...

It makes for a fun acronym DACH meaning roof in german. If they used Ö why not DÖS with an S for Schweiz then ?

azepoi··on Is my blue your blue? (2024)
This is largely cultural and language sensitive. I took the test as a french native speaker and got a green-blue boundary greener than the average population with the commentary "For you, turquoise is blue". Indeed it is. It is called bleu turquoise in french.
azepoi··on M 7.4 earthquake – 100 km ENE of Miyako, Japan

Both likely come from (middle) dutch bakboord (the side of your back) facing the stierboord (the side with the steering oar) . Stierboord became estribord then tribord. Its more explicit in modern german and dutch.

azepoi··on Japan has opened its first osmotic power plant
Yes the brine could just be diluted wih gray water to reduce the environnemental impact without the energy recovery of the osmotic plant and the capital can be invested in other renewable with better efficiency.

That being said it's a first so it's a pilot project needed to have feedback on a real plant in operation and not just back of the enveloppe calculations and suppositions. Sometime you need to just build the thing to encounter problems, issues or non-issues.

azepoi··on Why you can’t grow cool-climate plants in hot climates
Pine tree suffer from other parasites and notably sphaeropsis fungus
azepoi··on French firm Gouach is pitching an Infinite Battery with replaceable cells
25000km is 250 100km days per year. That's a lot.

In France for example the average yearly distance travelled by car is closer to 12000km not 25000. More achievable but still a lot.

azepoi··on Million Times Million
Exactly how it's called in french
azepoi··on Endometriosis is an interesting disease
Heard this in France too from MD. Link between drinking too hot (over 60°C) and oesophagus cancer

azepoi··on Take the pedals off the bike
Half the children seem to have one in France. My neighbourhood is full of them. Draisiennes/laufräder/balancebikes are a real transportation means as children go every single day to the crèche on them. Some Kids that do this know how to ride and can learn to ride a real bike before 3. You then have to find one small enough

azepoi··on Combining 15s interval whole-sky-camera photos to form a 4y spanning keogram
Have you got a link or do you remember the name of this person?
azepoi··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
It can be cultural. Turquoise is often called bleu turquoise in french. So it's more of a blue to me.
azepoi··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
It's orange in french
azepoi··on Panic at the Job Market
Openings/needs can be shared and relayed through networks before being listed publicly. You can also made yourself know as a potential hire before the need arises or before it is fully validated/budgeted and getter recontacted on Day 1.
azepoi··on Show HN: Tool to calculate how much milk is needed to make an amount of cheese
Most hard pressed cheeses (think comté, beaufort, gruyère, gouda) are around 10L/kg, Parmigiano reggiano is more like 15L/kg, so I think the app underestimate it, unless by Parmesan you mean not the real deal

Obviously dryer cheeses are more dense and require more milk per kg as they age

The cheese choice is severly lacking :) The milk type choice is nice, as Cow's milk contains more water compared to goat or sheep's

azepoi··on In Europe, trains are full, and more are on the way
Regional airports are usually subsidized by local governments to put them on the map. Also jet fuel could be taxes at à similar rate as gas/diesel
azepoi··on Cicadas are so loud, fiber optic cables can ‘hear’ them

azepoi··on Gandi.net – Pricing Update
Free is a marketing gimmick. It was never free but included in the domain package = domain registration + dns hosting + email boxes. The domain prices were generally higher than some concurrents. Now all of a sudden the domains see a price hike of 20-40% and each basic mail box that was included costs 57€ VAT included. So if you use the mail box this is essentially x3 or worse on the price. God forbid you used two mailboxes.
azepoi··on Gandi kills free email service effective 30.11.2023
the cost is at the end of the new price list after the domains.

Prix mensuel de la nouvelle offre mailbox / new mailbox offer montly prices

         HT/VAT excl
standard 3,99 € / $3.99

premium 5,99 € / $5.99

respectively 4,79€ and 7,19€ TTC/VAT incl.

It's insane. So with 2 mails boxes, that were not free but included in the price/package of the domain. I will have to pay 2121.2*3.99=115€/year for a basic e-mail service that was included until now. It feels like a breach of contract.
