baggachipz··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
And also, who would buy one?
baggachipz··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
> Of course it might be harder to keep a Cybertruck running for 50 years due to all the computerized components

And all the well-documented reliability and quality issues.

baggachipz··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
The Y redesign to adopt more of the "Cyber" ethos is such a mistake. It won't age well, but then again neither will the brand.
baggachipz··on Tesla winds down Cybertruck production after years of poor sales in few markets
That original process was what should have led to lower prices. Instead, they couldn't do it and had to resort to gluing steel panels onto a body-on-frame design which is much more expensive. They still managed to keep it just as hideous, so kudos there I guess.
baggachipz··on Goodbye from Salon
Oh I for sure see this in my day job.

Us: "Here Google, I've done your bidding to earn higher placement in your search engine"

Google: "Thanks for all the data, idiot. Now we'll show it on our site and claim it as ours"

Our organic traffic is WAY down despite nonstop kowtowing to their demands.

baggachipz··on Goodbye from Salon
Wow. I'm honestly shocked by this. It's been a mainstay for so long. It's as ad-riddled as other news sites, is it that ad blockers finally did them in?

baggachipz··on Tell HN: Gemini trains on chat history, even for subscribers (personal accounts)
Public perception. "Look, we care about your privacy! We won't use your data!"

six months later

Quietly update the ToS to allow them to retroactively use all of your history and data going forward, attempt to fly under the radar and/or gaslight users that it's always been that way

baggachipz··on Geoffrey Hinton: it might turn out we were better off without AI
> Hinton, 78, said that within a decade and possibly sooner, humanity will know whether it can manage the technology’s risks and enable what he called “radical abundance” or whether “we fail to manage the risks and … have a huge gap between rich and poor, huge cultural problems, massive unemployment, just society being torn apart”.

Uh... we're already at the latter prediction.

baggachipz··on Tell HN: Gemini trains on chat history, even for subscribers (personal accounts)
All they have to do is change it after the fact. The idea that they would self-police is laughable.
baggachipz··on Tell HN: Gemini trains on chat history, even for subscribers (personal accounts)
Is anyone actually surprised by this? They've devoured the whole internet for training already, the stream of shit coming in from users is the only way to hoover up more training data.
baggachipz··on I dumped Apple’s word list
That's incidental, but I hear it a lot. I started using this screen name nigh-on 30 years ago (as was the slang at the time), but I love that people recognize that.
baggachipz··on I dumped Apple’s word list
> Every other real person on that list is dead, and nearly all of them are Nazi officials, dictators or terrorists. Then there's Trump

If the shoe fits....

The genie's way out of the bottle with sports betting. Nonstop ads, branding tie-ins, billboards, podcast ads, on and on.

And it's terrible and going to destroy sports.

I would assume it's to hire more lawyers.
baggachipz··on The US government is hiding secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
If it's simply not blocking this answer, then it's a win. Doing nothing is better than actively breaking the law.
baggachipz··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
> The Trump administration has until November 6 to answer the senators.

How convenient that this is right after the midterm elections. If they maintain control, the republicans can simply decide to ignore this requirement without penalty.

baggachipz··on The EPA Is Quietly Killing Its Web Archive

I'm sure they'll release this one as soon as the release the Roadster introduced 9 years ago.
baggachipz··on Delta’s Biscoff cookies were supposed to be temporary
Oh no, it's been years. At least the last 10 or so. They usually have either cookies or pretzels, but usually both and if you ask nicely they'll give you the cookies. Two if you look emaciated.

baggachipz··on X purges 13,000 accounts linked to suspected meddling ahead of US midterms
People are just shrugging and going back to it.[1]

It's really disheartening.

baggachipz··on X purges 13,000 accounts linked to suspected meddling ahead of US midterms
This is absolutely not a "both sides" thing. The owner of the network is spending record amounts of money on getting Republicans elected this cycle (and last). The idea that his social network would do anything counter to the whims of the CEO or his pal is utterly laughable.
baggachipz··on Things to know when you get cancer
The first point is by far the most important. The US healthcare system (and probably others) is an unfeeling machine and you have to treat it that way. Ask for earlier appointments, cancellations, and referrals to other specialists. Navigate it as if nobody knows (or cares) what you're up to. Doctors tend to only exist within their silo and it's often on you to request a different type of doctor or even another one of the same type. Be a pain in the ass, your survival may depend on it.

Personal story: I was having trouble using my left arm. Like, couldn't lift or type or do much of anything with it. Was told it was a pinched nerve by physiatrists and orthopedists, despite having no pain. Only when I specifically requested for a referral to a second neurologist did he order the head MRI which exposed a brain tumor in my motor cortex. We were able to move quickly and get me on a treatment plan which has bought me a lot of time. Had I not advocated for myself, it would have probably mutated into a much worse type and killed me soon.

baggachipz··on How the Military Will Hack the Election
Fair point. "It was rigged against me, but I still won because of how great I am!"
baggachipz··on How the Military Will Hack the Election
Two scenarios:

1. Republicans win in midterms. Trump: "I defended democracy!"

2. Republicans lose in midterms. Trump: "The election was rigged by the evil Democrats!"

Recall that the whole basis of the Jan 6 insurrection was that he made the same "rigged" claim. He's already laying the foundation to claim "rigged" this time too, unless it conveniently benefits his party.
