bakenator··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
I built a graphical logging tool called Llama logs. Mostly because I thought it would be cool to see a live diagram of a cloud system I was working on. Also because webgl has been a hobby of mine.

bakenator··on Show HN: Llama Logs – Visualize Your Distributed System Through Logging
I have not heard of that project before, so that is the main reason. It looks very cool!

From some brief review of their docs it looks like the implementation requires an agent on the host. Llama Logs does not, making it as simple as possible to get started.

Hello everyone, this is a solo project that I have been working on during quarantine. The link above has a good overview of how the system works.

It is ready for user accounts now if you want to start visualizing your system. But there is also a demo that does not require signing up.

I'm just curious, what was your experience trying to develop games in your spare time? Were you told to stop?
bakenator··on Ask HN: Best book / resources on leadership, especially for tech teams?
When managing people in tech, I think it is equally as important to know how to organize as it is to know how to lead. I would recommend "The Phoenix Project" and "The Unicorn Project" and "The Goal" to all tech managers.

No matter how good your communication/leadership skills are, your team will be severely handicapped if they are working in an inefficient/limiting environment.

Coming at the same lessons from a different perspective, I have also found "Turn The Ship Around!" to be a very good resource.

bakenator··on Slack S-1
I think this highlights the distinction between book value and market value. GAAP accounting pretty much tries to value the net value of the company based on the holdings/liabilities that it is legally entitled to at that second. Because a Slack customer can stop paying at any time, it would be wrong to say Slack already had that money in the bank.

However the idea you point out is why on the stock market people value companies completely differently than their book value. It would be pretty interesting if there was a standardized balance sheet like document that could be made with projected value.

bakenator··on Bringing transparency to ER prices, one hospital bill at a time
The US government has put in place extremely heavy barriers to open a medical care facility. If we were to allow people to open facilities that compete with hospitals, we would very quickly see advertised prices and dramatic price drops. The medical cartel and all its bizarre non-market activities are a result of the existing legislation in place.

The Thing is on display at the NSA museum in Maryland. Very interesting museum for crypto history.
bakenator··on Higher-paid, faster-growing tech jobs are concentrating in 8 US hubs
The majority of jobs in DC metro are government contracting as you would imagine. That is not to say there are not interesting opportunities available. A few startups and many small contracting shops filling niche spots for the Gov.

IMO the cost of living in not good in DC metro. Very high home prices, only below SF, Boston, NYC. Lower salaries than SF/NYC across the board. Upper middle class in DC requires 200k income, many families here with two 100k earning parents.

How are companies in the program paired up with mentors? Do mentors specialize in specific business spaces? Do companies work with different mentors for different parts of the program, eg marketing/technical advice/fundraising?
