bakugo··on Ask HN: What in the world is taking Ubuntu so long?
My understanding is that everyone gets this at the same time.

Ubuntu Pro provides security updates for packages that wouldn't otherwise be supported by Canonical at a given point in time. If your version of Ubuntu is still within the (non-extended) support period, kernel security updates are always provided regardless of Pro.

bakugo··on Discord is ditching Electron and its new app uses less RAM
Mod as in modification, not moderation.
bakugo··on A thousand fewer paths to root
Some distros even include LPE as a feature (cough Ubuntu Server)
bakugo··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
> I cannot help saying that a great deal of nonsense is being written and talked nowadays about the dignity of manual labour. There is nothing necessarily dignified about manual labour at all, and most of it is absolutely degrading

That's unfortunate, as manual labor will be the only thing left if AI companies have their way.

bakugo··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
It is indeed very easy:

bakugo··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
What part of it sounds satirical to you? It's all true.

AI companies don't exactly try to hide the fact that their end goal is replacing all human jobs.

bakugo··on Just a little AI resistance, as a treat
I've come to the same conclusion. It feels like, in the past 5 years or so, all businesses beyond a certain size have adopted the "we're too big and successful to give a shit about our customers, they'll keep paying us anyway" mindset.

Here's my own example: My local ISP has had intermittent connection drop issues for years. I'd call them about it, and they'd at least pretend to care, maybe send in a guy to replace the router, even though they never actually fixed it for good. If I call them today, though, I'll be forced to explain my issue to a "virtual assistant", get put on hold for 20+ minutes, and if there's an actual human available to take my call, they'll basically tell me to pound sand. And I have no choice but to accept it, because all ISPs are like this now.

bakugo··on Just a little AI resistance, as a treat
> You can just prompt your AI agent to "avoid sounding like AI."

No, you cannot. You might get a slightly different writing style, but it will still be the same brand of slop.

If it was that easy, don't you think the AI labs themselves would just add that to their system prompt?

bakugo··on Revolut moves to self-hosted GLM
Why would you want a junior steering the AI? Hell, why would any developer need to steer the AI at all? Just lay off the entire dev team and let the non-technical managers/execs tell the AI what they want directly.

"AI can do all the development work on its own, and you will be replaced by it, but I won't because my position as a meat proxy relaying instructions makes me special" is just you trying to cope with the inevitability of your own prophecy. You WILL be laid off too.

bakugo··on Revolut moves to self-hosted GLM
> most of their junior devwork can be replaced completely by AI - so they really should start to learn how to work with it. I recommended everybody to get a private 20€/month claude subscription

I'm struggling to wrap my head around this. "This technology will completely replace you and lead to your unemployment, so you should fund it out of your own pocket"? Is that what you're saying? If so, can you please explain your reasoning?

bakugo··on Anthropic's growth just flattened
I think all numbers coming out of Anthropic are utterly meaningless until we can answer the question of "just how subsidized are those subscriptions?"
bakugo··on Skill to Create Product Videos
Watching the video is too much work, you're supposed to have your AI agent do it for you.
bakugo··on AI fan wikis riddled with errors are muddying the waters of games culture
I don't think there is a solution. The internet as we knew it is over, I give it 5 more years before it becomes borderline impossible to find new human-created content on it.
bakugo··on OccupySaaS
Performative "guardrails" consisting of a single vague and easily bypassed prompt. It hasn't stopped anyone, and likely only serves as future legal defense in case of a lawsuit.
bakugo··on OccupySaaS
No. Some people want it to be, but it doesn't take a lot of thinking to understand why "we got fired from big tech because of AI, so now we're fighting back by funding said AI out of our own pockets" makes absolutely no sense.
bakugo··on The importance of communities around software
> Does the project have an inclusive code of conduct?

If you want a project to be community driven, adding an agreement that empowers its leaders to punish and exclude any community member for any reason, including reasons that have nothing to do with the project itself, is the opposite of that.

Codes of conduct result in dictator-driven projects, not community-driven projects.

bakugo··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
> Slowly, more and more user accounts get banned, and even technical people I know fail to make a new account which lasts more than 3-4 days.

Meanwhile bots are running rampant and I can't scroll through the site for 10 minutes without seeing an obvious bot post or comment. Dead internet is real.

bakugo··on Wikipedia's Cleanup of AI-Generated Content
> The median new plugin used to end up with a couple thousand installs. It's now 28.

This feels like a microcosm of software development as a whole.

There's more software than ever, yet there are fewer people engaging with said software than ever, and the good software gets buried under a giant pile of crap.

bakugo··on AI is ruining haunted houses
Might be easier to list the things AI isn't ruining.
bakugo··on F-Zero X on Nintendo 3DS
> it's a huge savings over getting a human to do it

This of course assumes it's something anyone would consider worth paying a human to do (it's not).

bakugo··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
Does DeepSeek offer a heavily subsidized subscription that provides 20x+ more usage than the equivalent value in API tokens?

API usage being profitable is completely plausible, but almost nobody pays API prices for Claude and GPT, nor would they be able to afford them if the subscription suddenly stopped existing.

bakugo··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
> I, and many of my friends and cooks could take this easily.

No, you couldn't.

bakugo··on There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability
> The difference is that PHP has a long history of vulnerabilities while platforms like Java don't.

What makes you say that? I know several websites that ran on unpatched PHP 5 versions for over a decade, without a care in the world until now, because there were no known serious vulnerabilities in the interpreter itself.

bakugo··on Upcoming critical PHP security release (CVE-2026-109618 / -109619)
Strange to see this so far down the front page. If the rumors are true, it may be worse than Log4Shell.
bakugo··on Tsrs: A Port of TypeScript to Rust
So excited that you avoid writing a single line of it at all costs.
bakugo··on Degraded availability for GitHub Actions, GitHub Pages and Webhooks
Trying to slow down the growth would be an admission that everyone having their AI agents pushing 500 commits per hour autonomously may not be an objectively good thing for everyone involved. They won't do that.
bakugo··on Linux 7.3
Linus thinks AI is no different from a compiler, so it's likely that none of these commits are being reviewed. After all, how often do you doubt your compiler's output?
bakugo··on OpenCode Hacked: User credentials leaked
Honestly, who isn't bragging about their vibecoding tokenmaxxing attitude nowadays?
bakugo··on Inside Polymarket's paid quote-retweet esports program
They do this on Reddit as well. Some accounts post about news and events with an image attached, and just so happen to include a reference to Polymarket somewhere in the image every time, even when it makes no sense.
bakugo··on Steam Client is now faster than Epic's new vibe coded launcher
I highly recommend just using your normal browser to navigate the store. Using it within the client doesn't really provide any advantages at all.
