balakk··on Scammers are abusing an internal Microsoft account to send spam links
It's definitely a Microsoft owned domain and actively used - for example in Azure Active Directory (Entra).
balakk··on RE#: how we built the fastest regex engine in F#
It's all about the goddamned machines.. since F# is terse, they figure agent-generated F# code is cheaper.
balakk··on RE#: how we built the fastest regex engine in F#
Finally, an article about humans programming some computers. Thank you!
balakk··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
I wonder if this emboldens china to do the same to Taiwan..
balakk··on Microsoft's New PC Looks Just Like a Mac Mini but Serves a Whole New Purpose
For those of us in "enterprise" work farms, thin clients never really left. Citrix and related technologies are still massively used within any enterprise that has offshore/outsourced IT and software dev teams. It is still the most cost-optimal way to provide IT environments to vendor/non-FTE resources, and this is not going away any time soon. These devices can be incredibly convenient, it takes away the multiple man-years of effort involved in rolling out remote-access solutions.
balakk··on Half a century of SQL
Sorry but I've to agree with the other flippant response to this post. The whole idea of SQL is to avoid such imperative thinking, and SQL optimizers are incredibly good in most prominent DB engines. There are ways to hint and influence a certain query plan; but that's not to take away from the incredible convenience that SQL affords for writing adhoc queries.
balakk··on Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA)
If only google can buy some "search" technology for using in this app..

balakk··on Google layoffs Jan 20, 2023 – California WARN public records
I suspect not, https://twitter.com/Kantrowitz/status/1616888609885372416

May not be the same folks, but it surely didnt happen that way.

balakk··on Hacker News Parody Thread (2013)
slightly reminds me of k5, when it was funny and interesting:

balakk··on AirPods Pro (2nd Generation)
I have a pair, but haven't used too many gestures, since it seems somewhat limited. I was very surprised that you cant even accept/reject a call with a gesture. Just curious, why would you get buttons instead of sensors?
balakk··on Windows needs a change in priorities
Windows exes open fine in WSL2. You can also run linux apps from a Windows prompt - which is weird, but it works.

balakk··on I Tricked Myself into Liking Running
> For example, target running at 165-170bpm

Depends on age/health condition, 165-170 could be much higher for an older, less healthy person. But the strategy is right I think, with an adjusted bpm

balakk··on Peering agreements between Backblaze and Cloudflare
Cant speak for others, but there are some specialized SKUs in Azure you can opt, for non-metered egress data transfer.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/expressroute/expressr...

It starts about USD 1200 per month, for a 1 Gbps line.

balakk··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2021?
There will be contact with an alien civilization, the kind of which we haven't ever thought about.
balakk··on Microsoft announces Lists, a new Airtable-like app
FWIW, Sharepoint (online) has had a Lists feature for decades now, and is as prevalent in Enterprises as Access was, if not more. It just so happens to be that Teams is the flavor of the future. So more stuff from SharePoint comes into Teams. Not everything is a conspiracy.

Disclaimer: work there, but my views..

balakk··on How to burn the most money with a single click in Azure
There are other ways to setup guard-rails in Azure - policies are one such feature:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/governance/policy/tut...

They may not necessarily enforce spending limits - but it's possible to restrict provisioning of costly resources, or even whitelist resources that can be provisioned. Almost every Cloud Foundation project nowadays involves setting up these guard-rails.

balakk··on Microsoft's “Love” of Linux
If you're asking if WVD desktops can be delivered to a Linux browser, yes - there's a HTML5 client that renders desktops. In addition, a Linux toolkit was announced for thin clients in the recent Ignite conference.

balakk··on Azure Cosmos DB: Microsoft's Cloud-Born Globally Distributed Database
Yes, CosmosDB lets you choose your preferred consistency level.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cosmos-db/consistency...

The performance impact of different consistency levels are available here.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cosmos-db/consistency...

As you would expect, stronger consistency leads to lesser throughput levels.

balakk··on The NetHack dev team is happy to announce the release of NetHack 3.6.1
Winning Nethack games is just like any other hard accomplishment; you have to plan, know what's needed to win, and have patience. It's an unforgiving game, but winnable with no cheating. I have ascended a couple of times as a Valk and Wizard. I stopped playing a decade ago because it's very hard to play casually; you just get so involved. I am in awe of people who do mind-boggling conduct ascensions like the one here :

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!original/rec.games.rogueli...

I suppose the time spent was worth it for them.

balakk··on Concussion doctor says he found CTE in living NFL player
One of these is not like the others. I'm as big a Ronnie fan as any body else, but Snooker is less physical/athletic than any of the other sports in that list. I am not discounting the skill by any means, however - Ronnie in full form is unlike any other snooker player, perhaps except jimmy white.
balakk··on Brave expands Basic Attention Token platform to YouTube

balakk··on Tiny Phones That Go Inside a Butt (2016)
I just bought an iPhone SE. It's not as small as the Jelly, but way more usable. It runs latest ios 11 pretty well, has a decent camera, and > 1 day battery life for my usage. I am figuring it will last at least 2 years, considering it has the same internals as an iPhone 6S. If you're looking for a small phone, the SE nails it IMO.
