ballon_monkey··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
China who is encroaching on its neighboring countries? Attacking ships in Philippines waters. Yelling at everyone demanding respect while disrespecting everyone around them.

No, China is no more a grownup than the US.

HN isn't designed for flame wars sure, but comments regularly get down voted till hidden just for having a differing opinion.

Edit: Not being able to down vote till 300 points is a good thing tho, does prevent new accounts being created just to down vote.

> When someone asked, he got downvoted a bunch and ridiculed, which reminds me of why I don't have a Reddit account.

This happens on HN too.

ballon_monkey··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
I can't reply to every comment about 'vibe coding' but its strange that HN of all places still seems to think that AI is only good for 'coding'. We use AI across all departments and have laid off 0, and still hiring. AI is great for small to medium businesses to increase productivity and revenue without needing to hire lots of people. Big companies are realizing they hired way too many people.
ballon_monkey··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
There's a LOT of Anti-AI people at Microsoft that they are trying to purge. I don't think its depressing, think it's just something we have to go through and a lot of people will who were negatively affected will look back on wondering why they pushed so hard against AI rather than up skilling.
ballon_monkey··on I paid people to try and follow my README
I tried reading after that line but I couldn't take it seriously anymore.
ballon_monkey··on BYD Slashes Price of Electric Car and Becomes Cheapest in Australia [video]
No they arent? See BYD for sure, but see most other brands more often still.
ballon_monkey··on Waymo in Singapore
They are car lite. You need to purchase a CoE before you buy a car, those last 10 years, and are auctioned off. Current prices are ~133k sgd for a CoE not including the car which can often be 100k+
ballon_monkey··on Garry Tan wants US open-weight AI labs to 'distill' frontier models, too
Bedrock is really bad. It seems like they don't host the models very well because they produce tons of bugs/errors calling the model. For example you can end up with Anthropic models not returning a stop token and you end up waiting for a timeout thinking its doing something when it isn't.

ballon_monkey··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Oh sorry, to catch you up on the conversation. We are talking about Twitter, and we are discussing it on HN where the uneducated like to hate on Elon.
ballon_monkey··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
hagbard_c replied with a bunch of examples to the initial reply to me.
ballon_monkey··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
> iirc your comments weren't even making any big statements, just giving out your simple opinions without even invoking any political beliefs

Initially I did type out more, but I didn't want to turn it into an argument, so I kept its simple.

I just don't like that the left keep spouting out that elon did a nazi salute when he didn't, and his gesture is no different to anything the democrats have done. But HN is frustrating like this. You try to keep it simple and neutral. Downvoted/flagged. You voice your opinion. Downvoted/flagged.

ballon_monkey··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
No. They don't have eyes, because its quite clear to anyone with half a brain that it's not a nazi salute, and is no different to the same hand gesture that democrats use. It's sad the loud minority still believe calling everyone a nazi or fascist bears any weight.
ballon_monkey··on Wk. 6 of Vibecoding an MMO
It's smooth in Chrome but its buggy and unplayable in Firefox :( but fun!
ballon_monkey··on Muse Spark 1.3
I'll happily pay for Grok, it's a great model. 4.6 often does better than Anthropic at coding and analysis where Anthropic fails for 'oh no cyber security, don't ask me to check if you're redacting passwords correctly in logs'. And it has no problem telling the truth where OpenAI / Anthropic don't want to upset the people on the left and will happily lie or avoid hard truths.

Edit: I get it. It's a hard pill to swallow. I understand people don't like Musk or Zuck. But it doesn't change the fact that you're being lied to and brainwashed.

ballon_monkey··on Sol loves to cheat
If you're building your own system this is an easy problem to solve.
ballon_monkey··on PostgreSQL for Everything
> This is exactly how tightly coupled, unmaintainable software is constructed.

No. If you're struggling to build software against a DB and then abstract parts to use Redis or ES or whatever in the future, that's kinda a skill issue you or your team have with building poor software to begin with. Nothing to do with using a DB for multiple things like a Queue/Search etc.

ballon_monkey··on PostgreSQL for Everything
Yeah this really isn't so true anymore. I was a diehard Dapper fan for a long time, but the performance of EF Core is comparable to Dapper now. Dropping down to SQL in EF Core is super easy and parameterized. I just don't even bother with Dapper anymore. I have an app with ~200k users with the slowest query being ~6ms and of 1000s of queries only 3 are hand rolled complicated SQL written for perf executed via EF Core.

ballon_monkey··on xAI, SpaceX, and the Race for AI Buildout
Musk didn't break the law.

Your analogy is breaking the law.

ballon_monkey··on xAI, SpaceX, and the Race for AI Buildout
> this is a wildly bad-faith argument

No. Calling it illegal is just something people do because they hate musk. They fell into a loop hole and had no permits as they were technically allowed if they stayed in 1 spot for less than 364 days. EPA later determined they did not qualify and required permits, permits were later granted.

Musk operated in a grey area to run his business to avoid having an idle data center while other people dragged their feet.

I purposely cut off `illegal` because calling it `illegal` was bad faith to begin with. But it's not unexpected that musk haters will come out raising banners in protest.

ballon_monkey··on xAI, SpaceX, and the Race for AI Buildout
> unpermitted gas turbines they've been running at their Memphis Colossus data center

Just a reminder that when you're building a business, having land and a datacenter ready and cannot be switched on, with idle staff, costs the business money.

xAI could only draw 7-8MW from the grid and needed to run 10s of 1000s of H1000s. They shipped in 15 gas turbines as a more permanent onsite power plant while TVA/MLGW worked on expanding the grid supply to 150-300MW.

So you can get upset at musk all you want, but he has a business to run, and waiting for a full grid build out isn't practical.

ballon_monkey··on LLM Honeypot
I tried it on all major models and it just tells me it a satire website. Would like to know what it fails on.

ballon_monkey··on Google Discloses $94.1B in SpaceX Stock, Marking 6% Stake
When FB was private Zuck had 57% of class B voting right stock. He retained this on IPO. My point is, if he did not have control over voting, before/after IPO, FB/Meta would not be where it is today. He prevented Ads being on FB for many years operating at a loss to grow FB while shareholders complained wanting to shove Ads all over the place.
ballon_monkey··on Htmx 4.0, the first JavaScript library to release exclusively on the Game Boy
I just like being able to pick up old projects that i avoided for ages, and being able to pull in HTMX and make it a bit more modern without rewriting in react/vue etc. And it feels like a modern app, not a 90s app.
