Big fan of BlueScreenView and WiFiInfoView! Thanks for all the great products.
banderman··on Lessons on Bubbles from Bitcoin
My understanding is that a good number of the exchanges currently operating require payment to list new coins, often in the form of a significant stake in the coin itself. At any point has any exchange ever stated that their company and officers do not hold stakes in the coins that are traded? I haven't seen it.
banderman··on CoinTracker raises $1.5M to make tracking cryptocurrency investments easy
Are there specific reasons for that particular date?
banderman··on Tell HN: 17 years on the same game
What a great game! It worked so smoothly over dial up. I put a lot of hours into this back in the day. The balance in the ship types and the teamwork required is brilliant. And then all of the mods for different game types and maps... just so much fun.

banderman··on The Decline of ‘Big Soda’ (2015)
I imagine that in the future giving a child any significant quantity of a super sugar liquid like soda might be seen as child abuse. The way it triggers the human brain isn't much different than illegal drugs.
banderman··on Old Smartphones Are a Problem for Apple and Samsung
Built in camera and video capture has improved an incredible amount. I think the value this provides to people with modern "phones" is pretty significant.
banderman··on How to sell a $300 chocolate bar
They raised $7.5mm towards the end of last year, so maybe there's more ad spending going? https://digiday.com/media/atlas-obscura-ceo-david-plotz-vide...
banderman··on How to sell a $300 chocolate bar
atlasobscura.com seems to mostly be click bait and paid placement these days, and it consistently gets spammed to social media platforms. I wish there was a way to filter out certain news sources from the feed.
banderman··on Preparing for Malicious Uses of AI
It's the same as the Microsoft "How old are you?" and Google "What painting do you look like?" apps. People don't think about what's going on behind something that seems trivial.
banderman··on Hey Microsoft, Stop Installing Apps on My PC Without Asking
I switched to only playing and buying games that work on Linux a few years ago and haven't regretted a moment of it. Indie games might not be as shiny and realistic looking but they're typically more creative and deep.
banderman··on [dead]
That whole article seems like an ad. I also don't see how it's in any way hacker news related.
banderman··on For first time a dedicated conversation on cryptocurrency in US congress
Deflation decreases the velocity of currency (less incentive to spend due to rising value), which is bad for the economy (less activity, so fewer job opportunities, leading to even less activity).
banderman··on SpaceX craft overshot Mars’ orbit and is headed to asteroid belt
What are the odds of this being intentional? They had what, 140k pounds of potential payload? And all they sent up was a car?
banderman··on Shotcut: Free, open source, cross-platform video editor
You can use it to record your screen, not just to live stream.
banderman··on Worries Grow That the Price of Bitcoin Is Being Propped Up
It's not just Bitcoin, it's every altcoin listed on that exchange, and the other two big Tether/USD exchanges (Poloniex and Bittrex).

banderman··on Free Software Foundation Receives $1M Donation from Pineapple Fund
Please cash that out before this whole Tether mess unwinds.
banderman··on Facebook is banning all ads promoting cryptocurrencies
Is there anything that it can exclusively do? I mean functionally in the real world, right now.
banderman··on Facebook to Let Users Rank Credibility of News
Or they already have a good idea about the credibility of the news sources and this will let them determine which users are credible.
banderman··on Monthly Amazon Prime membership fees are about to increase
For digital movies/music the credits do stack.
banderman··on Tether has issued $450M USDT in past 4 days
Those are extremely bold assertions with no evidence provided to back them up. How is Bitfinex secured from an inability to pay out? To my knowledge, they have never published an independent 3rd party audit showing that they actually have the reserves that would be required.
banderman··on The radical idea of a world without jobs
A standard 35 hour work week could help with this.
banderman··on Paying journalists to promote brands in articles
I wish that TV shows and movies had to disclose which companies paid for product/brand placement.
banderman··on Oculus Start: Technical and Financial Resources for Beginning VR Developers
Maybe some people don't remember how popular chat rooms were back in the AOL days?
banderman··on Oculus Start: Technical and Financial Resources for Beginning VR Developers
There are a lot of potential medical applications that will benefit from VR. Inspecting 3D x-rays especially.

Real estate virtual tours, interior design, architecture...

banderman··on An Amazon Order Might Lock You Out of Trusted Traveler Programs
Some companies sell directly on eBay, usually at a discount.
