barcoder··on How vlogging is empowering a new generation of stutterers
While I understand the sentiment this type of filter would make people's lives with a disability worse in the real. Better to accept ones self then cover defining features with a filter
barcoder··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
Such a great tool. I switched from note taking in Notion to Obsidian, mainly because of the speed at which Obsidian loads files.

So while I use Obsidian for my personal notes I still use Notion for teamwork.

barcoder··on 'Superager' brains resist the march of time to have memories like 25-year-olds
Interesting point that there are different forms of memory. A certain smell can take me back to a kindergarten memory.

Music seems to be another form of memory that resists memory loss even amongst Alzheimer patients.*

barcoder··on The Planets with the Giant Diamonds Inside
If you're interested in space mining there's an excellent book called Mining The Sky: Untold Riches From The Asteroids, Comets, And Planets by John S. Lewis that goes into great detail about the how space mining and building in space could work
barcoder··on Death Valley hits 130 degrees, near world record
I've experienced 50 degrees Celsius in the Sahara. Hard to imagine hotter.
barcoder··on Cauliflower and Chaos, Fractals in Every Floret
There's something fascinating about fractals that makes me stop whatever I'm doing and pause to look at them
barcoder··on Right to repair movement gains power in US and Europe
Just tried fixing a JBL speaker. Which should have been fairly straightforward, but the battery expanded jamming it in.

Next time I'll change the battery sooner.

barcoder··on “I wish I could have licensed the Id source code releases as BSD”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSD_licenses

BSD licenses are a family of permissive free software licenses, imposing minimal restrictions on the use and distribution of covered software. This is in contrast to copyleft licenses, which have share-alike requirements. The original BSD license was used for its namesake, the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), a Unix-like operating system. The original version has since been revised, and its descendants are referred to as modified BSD licenses.

barcoder··on Ask HN: Words of encouragement for someone lost in life?
Here's my list of actions you can do right away to break yourself out of torturous loops.

1. If you're stuck in a thought loop walk into another room (or even better go for a walk in nature).

2. Write a stream of consciousness every morning. Force yourself to write three or more pages (keep this writing hidden and secret, it's scary what comes out, especially at first).

3. Take cold showers. You can start warm, but aim to have a two minute cold shower. Or even better going swimming in cold water everyday.

A book I can highly recommend is The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. Lemme know if you want a copy.

Thanks for clarifying - damn auto correct!
barcoder··on Ask HN: What Are You Learning?
I'm really interested to hear about your process using ML tools and Blender. Nvidia Canvas is one I plan to test this week.

My current work flow is very hands on because I'm creating characters for a game and want an oil painted texture look. I'd like to find a way to copy the style from one character to the next.

barcoder··on Ask HN: What Are You Learning?
How to make beautiful 3D characters and scenes. I started with Blender and now I'm learning Substance for painting the models because the work flow is creativity focused. The possibilities are truly amazing with today's tools.

Working in 3D has opened my eyes to new possibilities. I believe that having skills in 3D will become very important over the next five years with adoption of mixed reality hardware.

I really enjoy seeing algorithmic works of art that have a touch of human control.

That's also a nice write up on Tyler's process. For those interested he mainly uses Closure:

barcoder··on First Atari Hotel to Begin Construction in Phoenix in Mid-2020
I like this idea of mixing real and virtual
barcoder··on JetBrains: $270M revenue, 405K paying users, $0 raised
Makes me wonder if we'll start to more investments at earlier stages because startups usually need to prove their business plan before they see outside cash
barcoder··on Gel that makes teeth repair themselves could spell the end of fillings

barcoder··on Can one get a patent for a consumer mobile application?
Normally parts of the application are patented
barcoder··on Ketogenic Mediterranean Diet alters gut bacteria and reduces Alzheimer’s risk
There's a lot to be said for the ketogenic diet, particularly in the short term for weight loss and sugar addiction. However, there are not many studies on its long term effects, so this has been an interesting read
barcoder··on [dead]
Incredibly sad story. Cool section at the end that shows she is pushing on with her life goals regardless.
barcoder··on ThoughtRain – write whatever is on your mind, it will disappear after 10 posts
Have you considered adding comments to the thoughts? That way the list of thoughts will not turn in to replies.
barcoder··on Show HN: moonmoons AR – Spatial Music App
AR and spatial audio with scanned objects, very impressive!
barcoder··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
How do I sign up?
barcoder··on Tell HN: Using Gmail? You will be force logged into Chrome
I noticed similar on Android Chrome. I can't log out of my email in the browser
barcoder··on The “Doorway Effect” – forgetting why you entered a room
If something is troubling my mind I will walk through a door and voila! My brain has found something else to think about.
barcoder··on Blue Vision, which builds collaborative AR, leave stealth with $14.5M led by GV
Sell people's tracking data like most "free" software
barcoder··on The most accurate map for August 21’s total solar eclipse
My coolest memory of a total eclipse was standing high on a cliff edge over looking the sea. As the sun went totally dark I the moon's shadow move quickly along the beach covering everything in darkness.

Really good points that you made, but I personally think it's good to find a high location with a view so you can take in more than just the sun/moon.
