bartwe··on .NET (OK, C#) finally gets union types
As a big user and fan of c# but this is a miss, as it always boxes value types.
bartwe··on LLMs encode how difficult problems are
Sound a lot like Kolmogorov complexity
bartwe··on Tinnitus Neuromodulator
I assumed everyone has that.. and that its the last output of a receptor dying.
bartwe··on A new PNG spec
I'm worried that by supporting too many encodings and color spaces this will hamper adoption and unexpected unsupported files. Perhaps this is more of an encoder/decoder library issue, which hopefully will give us rec2020 rgb32/rgb10a2 encode/decode apis so we can simply use them without having to know so many details.
bartwe··on IBM's CEO doesn't think AI will replace programmers anytime soon
Physics system for soap bubbles in a gamejam game
bartwe··on SDL3 new GPU API merged
No committee and motivated devs that need the result for their projects. Especially the FNA folks.
bartwe··on SDL3 new GPU API merged
Glad to have contributed to the dx12 part :)
bartwe··on What I think about Lua after shipping a project with 60k lines of code
We used Lua in the past, but mostly because doing quick iterations in c++ in that project was unrealistic due to 10+ minute build times.
bartwe··on S3 is files, but not a filesystem
This screwdriver makes for a horrible hammer.
bartwe··on Tailwind color palette generator
could use oklab color space support
bartwe··on What it takes to pass a file path to a Windows API in C++
linux uses utf8 for display of filenames but, the paths themselves allow non-utf8 byte sequences.
bartwe··on ‘Less than half’ fresh produce sold globally makes any profit
Farming for an ever growing population.
bartwe··on High-altitude heist – 500 dollars stolen
The ending of the article is weirdly anti-cash
bartwe··on The Quite OK Audio Format for Fast, Lossy Compression
Hopefully a movie format
bartwe··on A self-driving Uber killed a woman. The backup driver pleaded guilty
The video quality makes it seem like even at full attention you would see it too late, but most eyes see a lot better than that. Ofc the driver here is paying near 0 attention.
bartwe··on Amazon requires services on Fire TV to give it 30% of ad impressions or revenue
There is a reason they try and push folks to the Store....
bartwe··on Study finds 90% of Australian teachers can't afford to live where they teach
Society doesn't want personalized tutoring, they want cultural harmonization and daycare so the parents can work and society can remain stable.
bartwe··on Choose Your Weapon: Survival Strategies for Depressed AI Academics
That hasn't been true for optimizing compilers either.
bartwe··on Near-lossless image formats using ultra-fast LZ codecs
Sounds like a low cpu overhead compression approach would have helped here, something like lossy lz4 :)
bartwe··on Why did 250k Britons die sooner than expected?
Nitrogen pollution laws will soon change the numbers for the Netherlands significantly
bartwe··on 2D Liquid Simulator with Cellular Automaton (2017)
Ha, yup, I enjoyed adding that to the game :) It was inspired by the system dwarf fortress used at the time extended with pressure to allow equalizing vessels.
bartwe··on QOA, the Quite OK Audio Format
Very interesting, when better formats like vorbis were too cpu intensive for my game I ended up with striped and delta encoded wav compressed using lz4hc for something that was somewhat compressed, streamable and light on the cpu, this seems somewhat close to that.
bartwe··on Short, friendly base32 slugs from timestamps
Careful to not show these to end users as some may generate swearwords and such.
bartwe··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Airthings, expensive but just does the job perfectly.
bartwe··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
You did a few weeks of work and made 20K, sounds like a good deal. The folks getting the bonusses worked for years.
bartwe··on Ask HN: Is your memory as bad as mine?
Yup, it's been improving again lately, had to take close to a year off due to burnout, also vitamins, sport, sleep, and more time with irl friends/coworkers. Now back to a point that feels like 80% of preburnout.
bartwe··on People tricking ChatGPT “like watching an Asimov novel come to life”
Hyrum's Law is the near reverse of Postel's and i think it should be taught.
bartwe··on Porting 58k lines of D and C++ to Jai
There are a number of Rust projects happening, but not overtaking c++ any time soon.
bartwe··on Porting 58k lines of D and C++ to Jai
c# got this right, enforcing the lifetime of Span<>
