batrat··on Root shell on Samsung TV
I will add: Use the TV as a HUB for all IOT, light sensor so you know when the light is on or someone passes in front of the TV and there are some others but I can't remember now. They are all advertised in the Smart Things app.

I hate 2 things about my samsung tv's (I have 4 only samsung): the simplistic remote and ads on home screen. Even with custom dns sometimes they get through.

batrat··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
I wrote in another comment but basically yes. Also they can focus on other cases that require physical presence. No need to patrol the entire subway, put 100 police officers to just patrol, every station when you can have 2-3 guys watch the cameras and just 2-3 patrols ready for intervention.
batrat··on London Underground begins scanning passengers' faces
I don't mind it. I work in the same field and people don't want to work in government institutions anymore, there are less and less kids in police/military schools. Cameras allow officers to stop patrolling and do more preventive work, focus on hard cases, etc. In a relative small city we manage 500+ cameras and more are added every day. The problem is storage and finding people to monitor them. My only issue is getting it in hands of some crazy dictator, but that is another story.
batrat··on HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router
I use tp-link everything. I have all of them connected to self-hosted Omada controller in docker. Works like a breeze, including notifications. Used MikroTik before but "the dude" or whatever is called now was hit and miss. Probably you don't need it anymore if get llm to configure it.
batrat··on Google Cloud fraud defense, the next evolution of reCAPTCHA
Sorry, I trust Google more than my government for my data. I mean I trust photos, youtube, music, gmail, wallet, keep, etc. what is that I have left anyway? It's sad that we started from open web, but we ended up in the hands of few. Apple/Samsung, Google, Microsoft, Amazon decide basically how I live my life. I don't want to (and sometimes I try to hard), but I don't want to give up the convenience also, but not only mine, also for my family is in the same pot.
batrat··on US Court of Appeals: TOS may be updated by email, use can imply consent [pdf]
I had the somehow the same problem with a mobile operator here in EU. They said just by sending an email I agree with their new terms and subscriptions. It's a gray area, IMO. They could simply terminate the service but who wants that?
batrat··on Tailscale Peer Relays is now generally available
It happened to others but there are also some very good examples like Veeam community edition which, IMO, is the best backup software. They had lots of discussions and even pressure from management to terminated, but the numbers made a lot of sense and they kept it. Tailscale is in disadvantage here because they are in a very crowded market and it will be very easy to slip into one corner and let way for others like netbird, netmaker, nebula(?), wireguard (like u said), etc.
batrat··on Reports of Telnet's death have been greatly exaggerated
I use it strictly on older systems that only use telnet and for casual port checking on some equipment. Last time I had to check if AIS equipment is working properly. Some people think "servers" are the only thing in this world. Telnet is one of those things that probably keeps this world function properly.
batrat··on TikTok's 'addictive design' found to be illegal in Europe
I did the same... even faster. I installed it, suggested me some local crap. I wanted ltt, mkbhd, etc. searched those 2, added them, after that first 2 videos were the same crap. uninstall. even youtube is better. It's so much content on youtube that It's impossible to watch it all in a lifetime even at 5x speed. And 10x better content.
batrat··on Microsoft is walking back Windows 11's AI overload
But, but, what about those managers? What they are working on? Making explorer better? or AI AI AI?
batrat··on Android’s desktop interface leaks
Samsung should not give up DEX, is mature and works exceptionally well with applications that are supported (wireless DEX with my samsung tv works great). Knowing Google, they will give up after 5 iterations or updates will be very slow. It is good for the ecosystem, I hope it will become more mainstream.
batrat··on Instabridge has acquired Nova Launcher
I use Niagara Launcher because of the simplicity and quick access to every app. I highly recommend to everyone who wants a fast launcher and clean look.
batrat··on Gadget Exposed a Spy Camera [video]
This thing is great when traveling. I guess I'm gonna get one ($30 is just good enough I guess) just to scan my hotel/airbnb rooms.
batrat··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
So I have only one subscription: Youtube because of family/kids and bonus YT music.

For the rest: adguard phone/pihole home, frosty instead of twitch, newpipe instead of youtube(I hate the interface), infinity instead of reddit and a lot more alternatives for social media. Also using xmanager for some apps ;). I have zero ads on my phone or my pc. I disabled the ads once for my wife, she instantly yelled at me to enable it again :).

batrat··on iPhone Typos? It's Not Just You – The iOS Keyboard Is Broken [video]
This. I use romanian, english and turkish at the same time. Sometimes goes sideways because we mix a lot of words in english and romaninan in the same sentence, but it's ok. No other keyboard comes close.
batrat··on Emacs is my new window manager (2015)
Me: Open browser full screen, vscode selfhosted, termix, tacticalrmm/guacamole. Nowadays I only need a browser.
batrat··on India orders smartphone makers to preload state-owned cyber safety app
It's a dangerous trend that is happening. From EU chat control to this, is like everybody is so interested to know what the hell I'm doing with my life. The problem is with my kids, they likely will not enjoy freedom as we did it.
batrat··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
Almost 12 years of HN. I'm still a lurker, I'm sorry I don't contribute more, but I don't have much time and reading HN with a coffee in the morning is the best thing I can do. Thx everyone involved <3
batrat··on WeatherNext 2: Our most advanced weather forecasting model
if you search for a city usually it shows the current weather, but I've seen in some cities there is also a 7 day forecast
batrat··on Samsung Family Hub for 2025 Update Elevates the Smart Home Ecosystem
It is in the notes, in the article, there is no tracking:

"[11] Ads on Family Hub Cover screens will serve contextual or non-personal ads. Family Hub devices are not collectiong personal information or tracking consumers."

batrat··on uBlock Origin Lite in Apple App Store
Meanwhile firefox with full adblock and adguard dns/pihole if you like to selfhost, never seen an ad on my samsung phone.
batrat··on Ask HN: What's the best hackable smart TV?
Ads? I thought HN crowd already know how to use a pihole or at least adguard dns. I got Samsung TV's in every room because they are easy to use with a Galaxy phone, using it as a remote and a keyboard. Also wireless DEX is soooo underrated. Want a specific app on tv? no problem. I'm basically using them as displays for my phone.
batrat··on GNU Midnight Commander
why bother? I use mine in my AI powered, headless, kubernetes cluster
batrat··on The MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge
How is this useful? I don't get it? Is not a touchscreen, doesn't fold...
batrat··on PlasticList – Plastic Levels in Foods
Same. I would like to know too.
batrat··on Gemini-2.5-pro-preview-06-05
What I like about Gemini is the search function that is very very good compared to others. I was blown away when I asked to compose me an email for a company that was sending spam to our domain. It literally searched and found not only the abuse email of the hosting company but all the info about the domain and the host(mx servers, ip owners, datacenters, etc.). Also if you want to convert a research paper into a podcast it did it instantly for me and it's fun to listen.
batrat··on Show HN: F2 – Cross-Platform CLI Batch Renaming Tool
In windows I use PowerToys - power rename to rename files. But I'm not a power user I rarely need renaming something.
batrat··on Go European: Discover European products and services
(Rant sorry)

While i'm from EU and I support the movement, after I looked over some numbers it is hard to ditch something like Amazon. 1st thing for me are the prices and monthly I can save at least 100 Euros just from shopping on deals. Second Amazon employs 150k people across EU and this is not a low number (how about them?).

Yes we need alternatives but the rich EU guys also have to invest some. Sometimes I feel that average Joe needs to support the "movement" while rich just mid their own business.

Same goes also with local producers: "support local farmers!". ME: "but the price difference is almost double form Kaufland/Lidl/Carrefour/etc for the same thing!" Sorry, I'm not in a position to just spend more just because...

batrat··on Ask HN: Where are the good Markdown to PDF tools (that meet these requirements)?
Stirling PDF? https://github.com/Stirling-Tools/Stirling-PDF
batrat··on Windows 11 – There's still nothing worth my time
I stopped reading when he uninstalled defender. Is the best thing ms did to windows! OP is like the 90% of linux users: if it doesn't do what he wants him to do, it sucks. Like you said most users don't care about TMP, they also don't care about who is protecting them, what interface it is, how printers work, how office works, how browsers work. This is why windows is/was successful, you start it, open outlook, mail, browser, print, play games, etc. Without ever thinking why it works. Does windows suck? Probably, but it does the job and is enough for 99% of the home users. Also if someone wants to personalize windows check reddit, you can change almost everything.
