Director of Technology for Refund Retriever. Fancy title, but I'm just the Chief Nerd that runs code, architecture, ops, etc... Used most languages the serve up web traffic since 1999, but mostly Ruby, Javascript, and ColdFusion/CFML.

Whatever opinions I express here are mine alone, and don't reflect those of my employer.

My HN username is how you'll find me pretty much everywhere else.

Whoever owns shares.
bdcravens··on Computer Science Programs Lose Students as AI Replaces Jobs
That's one of those decades-long debates that continues. Is CS actually "science"? Are developers actually "engineers"? Is a person in charge of a Kanban board an "architect"?

There are absolutely computer science jobs, but in general, a casual distinction would be what side of the research/implement line you fall (though in truth, it's probably more of a 2D graph than a hard line).

bdcravens··on Computer Science Programs Lose Students as AI Replaces Jobs
Even in good times, CS was poorly matched with the jobs people got the degree for. People put up with the BS because there was gold at the end of the rainbow.
bdcravens··on Northflank Breached
Not a great way for me to hear about Northflank for the first time.
bdcravens··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
Because no one cares about the nerdy stuff, they just want Lambos
bdcravens··on Raspberry Pi Zero 3W and Pi 4 Model A spotted in device trees
In many cases that’s an advantage. Tiny (or no) attack surface, less power, etc
bdcravens··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
In your shoes, I'd just get whatever Pro processor is available at that time. (Knowing that new processors were coming, I happily bought an M5 Pro machine last month)
bdcravens··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
As pointed out in a sibling comment, 153GB/s.
bdcravens··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
I believe they're discussing the base processors as a way of comparing generations, since there is no M6 Pro/Max. (the M2 base was at 100GB/s)

For a direct comparison to your processor, the M5 Pro is at 308GB/s.

bdcravens··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
and I thought I was doing something special with my little GMKTec 32GB machine I use for a dev server haha
bdcravens··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Did the same. Took a week or so to get used to the workflow after doing dev locally my entire career, but now I'm certain it's the best way to work. Even better is using a few scripts to simplify things like opening in VS Code (instead of `code folder-name` I run `codeon repo-name` from my local machine).

I did actually get a new M5 Pro/48GB machine last month, but that's only because I bought my work machine to keep my personal and professional lives properly separated; otherwise I wasn't seeing any issue running that M3 Max/36GB for a long time further.

bdcravens··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
According to the timestamp, that was uploaded less than 24 hours ago.

I'm not familiar with their site; I assume it's user-uploaded? In that case, it's the same challenge that every user-generated content site has, balancing openness with policing IP violations.

bdcravens··on Is PHP Running on Your ColdFusion Server? How to Check, and Remove It
I spent a good part of my career as a CF developer, but I found Homesite in the mid-90s. As a poor kid at college, carrying my editor around on a floppy to the various computer labs (yes it fit!) was very convenient.
bdcravens··on Is PHP Running on Your ColdFusion Server? How to Check, and Remove It
cfscript has been part of ColdFusion since 1998. It has expanded over time to include more functionality, but it has been there.

Also the markup-based functionality hasn't gone anywhere.

bdcravens··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
Scarier than that is the idea of replacing you with someone far cheaper who can drive the AI.
bdcravens··on Imagine an AI future where being banned means you are now economically useless
Don't we do that to felons already? They violated the TOS of society, and are categorically banned from a significant portion of the job market.
bdcravens··on Swedish government offices to ban ChatGPT and Claude
While interesting, it reminds me of all the headlines over the years about governments who were switching off of Microsoft Office to OpenOffice/LibreOffice. Needless to say Microsoft didn't close up shop.
bdcravens··on Crystal 1.22.0
If you mean pre-packaged jobs in that specific language, you're correct. However, if you're a Rubyist needing native performance, it's another tool in your toolbox.
bdcravens··on Websites are closing their doors to AI agents
Solvable problems (just login or pay). This is more than just blocking anonymous scrapers. Sites are blocking access to agents even when they have a proper "ticket" for access.
bdcravens··on How the Claude Code team does code review
They use Codex?
bdcravens··on Tesla Roadster
So the v2 that people put money down on 9 years ago has been thrown away. Hopefully they'll be able to easily get their money back, ideally with interest.

Obviously they mean v2, a design that apparently was thrown away.

bdcravens··on Meta’s new commercial terms will allow the scraping of news sites: experts
> I can't think of a single useful product or advancement

> They're pointedly worse than most other social media.

I agree that there's a lot wrong, but both Marketplace and Groups are actually pretty valuable and useful. To say that Facebook is just a feed of memes and politics is reductive.

bdcravens··on Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land
At least they'd have control and can fix it as they see fit, instead of waiting for the government.
bdcravens··on Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land
Put up your own fence inside of your property line that you can keep up to your needs and standards.
bdcravens··on Apple HomeView
Despite the typical snark on HN, I know there are still plenty who are bought in to Apple. Is anyone here using the HomePod and/or using Homekit? I'm mostly on board with the Apple ecosystem, and in my assessment when trying to outfit my home, I couldn't find a reason (maybe the privacy store is better) to choose them over Alexa or Google Home or any of the other options, including DIY.
bdcravens··on Character.ai has initiated voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Not familiar with the company. Home page says nothing other than a tag line and a signup to continue. About page does add very little. Their blog provides a little bit of insight, but honestly, I have no clue what they sell or what the value prop is.

Maybe I'm the clueless one, at it seems others are quite familiar with their story.

bdcravens··on CFTC Staff Were Told to Retract Analysis of Suspicious Oil Trades
Probably not, if the previous administration, when they had full control, is useful precedent.
bdcravens··on Mistral Large 4
Can we consolidate the posts? Currently there's 3 on the front page, basically all pointing to Mistral's messaging in different places.
bdcravens··on JetBrains reports revenue growth, net financial loss for 2025
I tried it in DataGrip on a messy database. It hallucinated about which tables and columns to use. Had better results using Claude in the terminal and having it give me the SQL to run.
