beached_whale··on Union Types and Option Types (2025)
when serializing these things it's generally going to be best to put the tag first though. That way it's cheap to figure out how to parse it.
beached_whale··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
even with remote access, they shouldn't have controls that allow for unsafe conditions.
beached_whale··on C++26 Contracts: Introduction to Preconditions and Postconditions
An anthropic employee did a talk earlier this year or last and i think it was said that yeah, they eat it up. Tools to find errors because it is visible is great
beached_whale··on Fingerprints are the new cookies
Consent banners are generally malicious compliance and designed to annoy.
beached_whale··on JetBrains reported a net financial loss first time in its tracked history
Most of their products have an AI harness embedded and it works well, at least for me. Has tools to let the models access proper debugging too(my experience is Clion) so that my build is available to them even when using remote/docker builds. The integration with codex works well too.

They host a lot of models too, and that is probably where they burned the cash.

beached_whale··on ICC judge on what U.S. sanctions mean for her and global courts
Canada did this for the Cuba sanctions years ago. There was/is a semi famous story about Walmart Canada and Cuban PJ's.
beached_whale··on Writing Efficient C++ Code (2013)
My thought too.

There are so many things that are expressible in C++ now that could not be without writing much more code or using per-compilation tools back then. The ability to run code at compile time that is not run at runtime is huge, #embed lets us make other tools output available without linker scripts or compiler specific tools that.

Also, most of the code from the past still works(from 10 years ago definitely works)

beached_whale··on Platform-independent SIMD in Go
Write it once with N errors, not N*M errors :)
beached_whale··on Platform-independent SIMD in Go
C++ is getting std::simd in the latest version and I am all aboard writing the vectorization with the least amount of intrinsic builtins I am able to. Even if not optimal, it's far better than the scalar ops.
beached_whale··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
I dont mean minimum wage. I mean skilled trades and highly educated. Who is going to build the homes we are build 1/2 to 2/4 what we did prior to 2010. Who is going to work the R&D roles when the Canadians are all working

Wage suppression can be dealt with by making the wages for visa workers higher than some formula that takes local and national averages into account

beached_whale··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Alberta's existence as a province was predicated upon those Treaties existing in the first place. It and Saskatchewan were part of the NW Territories until like 1905.
beached_whale··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Like, more markets for O&G and maybe AG too.

I mean, they are getting everything the want with the Fed gov building pipelines and other infra to aid them. The east/west from years back was the company didn't want to budge on the route through Quebec and decided to walk, Keystone was the US cancelling. Trudeau got the pipeline to the west coast done and it's doing a million barrels a day almost now. Plus others to east and Churchill look like they are in the works. Only so many welders

Canada has needed more workers but is suffering from a lack of affordable($675000 average when the average family makes <$110000) housing like many places with other costs rising too. The number of housing starts has never recovered from the huge downturn around 2010.
beached_whale··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
or a hash like other audio recognition techniques.
beached_whale··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
None of that requires recording and has been done with embedded hw with local software for years.
beached_whale··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
I forgot the part about finding the dominant frequency in each chunk
beached_whale··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
It is pretty neat and several resources online explaining it but it chunks the recoding and does a hash of the fft of each frame i think which reduces the data a lot. The server has a pre hashed database https://hackernoon.com/how-shazam-works-in-a-nutshell
beached_whale··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
I wonder how many of those are there to consult with customers and help them build their stores.
beached_whale··on Matrox: Graphics for Professionals
My first pc had some trident video card that failed right away and the local shop replaced with a millennium (g200, I think). I definitely got the better end of that one. It was 3d accelerated and came with some 3d text art tool that made animated text gifs in the software too.
beached_whale··on Creepy Crawlies
I wonder if they could pre-render the stuff older than a month ago and compress it and serve it as static content. Not optimal, trades space for CPU, but might be cheaper.
beached_whale··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Canada has been the largest buyer of US goods and services, limiting access to their markets where there are alternatives or they are luxuries can add up quickly. Even in the provinces that didn't outright ban US alcohol, the sales have gone down 55%. Alcohol is really easy though.
beached_whale··on GitHub down again? no PR access
github's value is that it has a lot of eyes and visibility for smaller projects(thought many get lost too). More and more this value is going down and that stability is getting more important. More so when the story of github these days is copilot(good or bad) and their downtime. AI is giving a lot of project owners second thoughts and being so open with an AI company too.
beached_whale··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
Wild caught is unsustainable and no amount of washing will change that.
beached_whale··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
More and more I think we need to fix farmed fishing and stop cleaning the oceans of life. We don't, en mass, hunt for cows or chickens. We farm them. It has an impact but it doesn't take out the whole ecosystem either.
beached_whale··on Cool URIs Don't Change (1998)
Microsoft has a terrible habit of doing that. KB's used to have a predicable URL, they may again, but they keep changing them. Or any of their docs really. It's terrible as those URL's end up in other documents to be killed. This is not really an enterprise friendly way of supporting customers.
beached_whale··on Switching to electric stoves can dramatically cut indoor air pollution (2025)
I've seen induction with dials for the stove. Ovens have had electronic buttons for decades though.
beached_whale··on Why do people hate the tech industry? (2023)
When it comes to empowering, I am not sure much beats Excel. It lets non techy people codify amazing things and get real work done.
beached_whale··on Countries are competing to see which can carry out mass surveillance the best
This parent wants a form of that that doesn't require identity disclosure. Like zero trust assertions. Without that, the risks are too high.
beached_whale··on Countries are competing to see which can carry out mass surveillance the best
mullvad has been one of the good ones.
beached_whale··on I hate compilers
There are a lot of people writing really bad scrapers and running them on far from high compute power systems. This is the prevent DoS because of those. The big companies are often far more clever and know they are traversing the whole internet and can come back later.
