beart··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
Most of the comments here are focusing on crimes in urban areas. The town I live in has a population of about 6,000. It also has low crime. But the municipal government has installed several flock cameras. I struggle to understand how these benefit me, as a citizen of the town. They definitely make me feel uncomfortable whenever I drive past, knowing that someone, somewhere is likely tracking and cataloguing my movements.
beart··on Speeding up code review with `small-change`
Every bad change here, that has been merged in the last 6 months, correlated with a lack of human review. Sure, someone hit the approve button, but it was done within 30 seconds of the PR creation time, clearly no review was performed. This is in repos that have deterministic as well as ai driven review CI checks.

And that doesn't even get into the "features" that were implemented without reviewing the design or requirements were actually hit (they were not).

I would love to replace all of these useless meat bags with more ai. But I would absolutely still want to be in the loop to review things.

The lesson I've learned about AI is that lazy/bad engineers without AI are still lazy/bad engineers with AI.

Okay, sorry, I don't know what I'm arguing anymore, this turned into a rant.

beart··on France's supermarket fridges were vulnerable online for months
Moving the check online doesn't remove the unreliable human, it just switches it from a stock person to an it person, or whoever receives the email in their inbox.
beart··on Steam Client Is Now Faster Than Epic's New Vibe Coded Launcher
Disagree. It does what I need it to do. The store might be slow but my games work great.
beart··on WSL3 Performance is about 5-60% faster than WSL2 depending on the workload
Dell, having one of the most popular engineering laptops of the past decade (xps). It's not surprising that it would have better than average support.
beart··on Friendship ended with Deno, now Node is my best friend
The article is from 2020, so you may already be able to make that judgment.
beart··on We ported the original Doom to SQL
We do this as well. There are some downsides of course, but overall it has worked out well for years. Funny we were told the use of stored procedures is a problem and the reason the product should be retired. You should see the dependency graph of the replacement.
beart··on Git 3.0's upcoming SHA-256 default will be a costly mistake
Hmm. If this is a security issue that matters, would you not be expected to migrate?

Not talking about archived code, but active projects that pre-date git 3.0

beart··on Don't Just Say Hello
Hmm, Except most chat applications have an indicator that already answers all those questions in the basic sense. When I set myself as "in a meeting" or "busy", it means... just that. "hey I see you are busy, are you available?" doesn't make a lot of sense.

Furthermore, I can't actually answer in the shorthand, because I don't know anything about it. "can you talk?" - for how long? about what? with who? I have no idea how to respond to you.

Please, just tell me what you want - "Hi, wondering if you have 5 minutes to chat about <topic>?".

beart··on Romania soccer introduces black card to 'combat abusive behaviour' from parents
Your comment implies the youth refs are the exception, but the VAST majority of play are at these lower competitive levels, and it is FAR more common to have youth or inexperienced refs than otherwise.
beart··on Romania soccer introduces black card to 'combat abusive behaviour' from parents
The ref is impartial and their only job is to manage the game according to law. If a team's fans are misbehaving to the point the game must be abandoned, it doesn't matter one iota to the ref if those fans are tanking on purpose. The league can deal with that.
beart··on Romania soccer introduces black card to 'combat abusive behaviour' from parents
I doubt many refs want this responsibility, even if it were feasible. And I don't think it is feasible in most cases. For instance, how is the ref going to pick out the problem fans while also managing the game itself? And how is the ref supposed to enforce the removal?

Keep in mind these refs are often volunteers, working solo, have no official connection to the teams or field owners.

And there is a ref shortage virtually everywhere, at all levels and sports. Making it more difficult just isn't realistic.

beart··on Romania soccer introduces black card to 'combat abusive behaviour' from parents
From my experience, the refs typically assign responsibility to the head coach of the team the fans represent. It's not the refs job to manage the fans. They are there to manage the game. If the coach or staff determine the problem fans should be removed, they can do that.
beart··on Real photos of young girls were in nudify-app ads on Facebook, Instagram
That's interesting. I've noticed similar things on youtube. It seems like by blocking most of the tracking, it automatically falls back to AI slop and wellness gurus. I've tried watching some of these ads out of curiosity and it's often difficult to even figure out what the actual product is. It feels very scammy. Certainly light years from the early promises of google offering text-only ads when everyone else had malware laden banners and toolbars.
beart··on Real photos of young girls were in nudify-app ads on Facebook, Instagram
Presumably these ads are targeted using the algorithm. Thought crime is scary and all that, but it's an interesting part of this system to consider. And then there's the question of these images living in your cache if you happened to be shown one. "Welcome to the internet.."
beart··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
I assumed from watching the video, the device is processing the audio locally and transmitting the results - text rather than audio.
beart··on Jellyfin 12.0
I can also recommend Wholphin if it is available (and you are the type of person who actually allows your TV to connect to a network). It's much faster than the official(?) jellyfin android client.
beart··on Sony makes bold claim about game ownership
I disagree with the assertion that Valve is responsible for the death of physical game copies.

First off, console games have gradually moved away from offering physical copies for years. This had the (probably deliberate) effect of killing the used game market. Earlier attempts to kill that market were driven by the proliferation of digital content that could not be resold.

Second, physical copies on the PC have not been guaranteed for a very long time. I would suggest it was actually the wide-scale proliferation of indie games that did more to kill the physical copy market than any deliberate transition from AAA studios. There are thousands of indie games out there now. Without digital copies, it would be impossible for anyone to actually purchase any of them.

And the momentum to move away from physical copies for PC gaming has been there for a very long time. No one was going to Best Buy to pick up a physical copy of minesweeper. There have been other factors as well, such as the popularization of MMORPGS which provided years of content from a single physical copy.

Really though, the idea that without Valve, the PC gaming market would still be chugging along on physical game copies just isn't realistic. It goes completely against the momentum built over the last 25 years of PC gaming.

beart··on Fastpotify
I also enjoyed wrapped, but at some point they made it only viewable in the app. It was previously available in the browser. That was the last time I thought about it.
beart··on Fastpotify
The number of times I boarded an airplane to find my offline song list empty... I had to completely stop relying on it.
beart··on Fastpotify
It's objectively really bad at a lot things. I've always had the feeling that the music is not even a primary feature of their product.

The last time I used it, I uninstalled once I realized that my kids could watch Logan Paul YouTube videos through the Spotify app. These masquerade as podcasts, but like a Trojan horse they are just vods of YouTube content. And at the time there was literally no way to disable this. No way to either turn off podcasts or specific content through parental controls or otherwise.

I just wanted to give my kids a way to listen to music while reading. I have since switched to our local community radio station.

beart··on It’s so hard to finish an idea that is not yours and is just suggested by AI
I just want something that I can use to record notes, with good backups, and a format that doesn't lock me in. Obsidian offers that. It has a pretty decent mobile app and desktop app, in terms of the actual editing. And if I do want to do something advanced, like automatically generate a daily note for recording what I worked on today, it can do that. You can do all these things with other programs, or even just raw files, but Obsidian adds just enough to make it easy.
beart··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
New Reddit is too. They were A/B testing it for a while, but now you can't use it without the login pop-up after a short timespan. The funny thing is, it has nothing to do with how much content you view. So if you really want to read something, you can hit F5 and scroll back down every time the pop-up is shown. Still not worth it. But honestly, Reddit content has taken such a plummeting nose dive over the last few years, this just feels like a final reminder that it's time to move on.
beart··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
Changing email providers sounds daunting, but it was relatively painless when I actually committed to it. I did a search over my password manager for my old email and just went through the list logging in and switching to the new email. Probably took a few hours at most.

For anything I missed, I set gmail to forward everything to my new host. Cleaned up the few things I missed, and am only left with spam. I still leave the forwarding rule there in case a personal contact or service I forgot pops up, but it has been years without any issue, and I never feel the need to log into gmail. Certain emails are not forwarded I think, despite the "forward all" rule... but nothing I've ever found to matter.

beart··on Gemini 3.7 Flash
Hmm. My company has an internal portal for generating Gemini API keys. I select a project from a drop down, enter a name, and press okay.
beart··on Pixel Watch 5
Yes you can see most of your data without a cloud connection. But some features are limited and require the subscription. A google account is required though to use the app I believe.

Of course, getting more than a snapshot of the data is a bit of a pain. Fitbit has a developer portal and you can create a dev app key to export your data. There is at least one open source project that pulls this data down regularly and feeds it into grafana. I'm not sure if the pixel line of watches provides a similar developer portal.

EDIT: actually, you said cloud connection. I think in this case the data is still being sent to the cloud, hence the API to fetch it. But you don't have to enable sharing with other services or purchase the health subscription. So maybe the answer is still that no, you can't really do much without the cloud connection.

beart··on Show HN: Git-knife – Edit commit messages, authors, and dates like a spreadsheet
It looks like the screenshot was an actual photo of someone's monitor. I'm left wondering why print screen wasn't utilized. And for some reason it really makes me not want to touch this project.
beart··on Scientists discover Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability on the surface of the Sun
I think you're off by about 90 orders of magnitude for the actual heat death
beart··on Cursor 0day: When Full Disclosure Becomes the Only Protection Left
Okay... but when "you" is a junior engineer on your team and now you are suddenly spending your entire weekend dealing with malware, it's kinda on you as well.
beart··on Cursor 0day: When Full Disclosure Becomes the Only Protection Left
Oh yeah that's a good point - two layers of auto executing scripts/binaries.
