beecafe··on Why We Don’t Recommend Ring Cameras
By that logic, anything that could potentially ever help catch a criminal is worth any potential cost to anyone who isn't you.

What about using content defined chunking? Then inserting a few lines shouldn't cause all the subsequent chunks to shift
beecafe··on The Waluigi Effect
Sounds like a "just so" story than a convincing explanation.
beecafe··on Nearly 40% of software engineers will only work remotely – TechTarget
Sounds like you're just too bad at engineering to get stuff done on such a schedule. Why don't you get your brain checked out? Most normal people can easily get productive work done 4 days a few working 4 productive hours a day. If you think this is entitled, that must be since you are unable to achieve the same thing. In that case, I implore you to look for early signs of cognitive issues, since if you address that, you might find yourself able to enjoy things, get stuff done quickly, and not force yourself to burn out for someone else's paycheck.

beecafe··on Social media is a cause, not a correlate, of mental illness in teen girls

Determinism is largely impossible due to arbitrary ordering of GPU threads and non-associativity of floating point operations
beecafe··on From Erlang to Lunatic
Completely incorrect and misses the point of Rust. Tracing through state in imperative languages without ownership systems (aka, anything that isn't Rust) is a complete shitshow. Rust is not a complicated language at all, and allows you to lay out programs in a new and better way. It gives you the benefits of pure functional programming - no sneaky mutation, no state to keep track of - with the simplicity and performance of mutation when it's safe to do so. This is what makes Rust actually good, and miles ahead of basically every other language in widespread use.
beecafe··on Declining sperm count: Much more than you wanted to know
Any proof for this assertion? Given that the majority of people in power (i.e, the actual decision makers) are men I'm pretty sure they would be happy to act in their self interest.
beecafe··on Automated data analysis for the prevention of criminal acts is unconstitutional

beecafe··on Ohio catastrophe is ‘wake-up call’ to dangers of deadly train derailments
Sure, I'd volunteer. What, you're too weak to do so? I guarantee that there many who are in a worse position than you who would gladly flight. And for those who can't, it is your responsibility to.
beecafe··on Ohio catastrophe is ‘wake-up call’ to dangers of deadly train derailments
The point of strikes is to cause economic disruption. Congress preventing them from exercising that power means there's no way for them to get their demands met. The Republicans wouldn't have been able to block it if the rail workers were allowed to express their power.
beecafe··on The FBI’s most controversial surveillance tool is under threat
Hello CIA!
beecafe··on I Thought I Was Saving Trans Kids. Now I’m Blowing the Whistle
Entire article ignores trans experiences, elevates a cis "ally" who feels trans people are icky, doesn't mention that detransitoners make up a very small fraction of all cases and the vast majority of people who transition are glad to have done so. Hand wringing about the effects of T on young girls from seeing the female body as a sexual object that is "ruined" by it. The only thing the article gets right is that puberty blockers are generally bad, but they're used because doctors are reticent to prescribe hormones, so they delay the choice.
beecafe··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
Those "fringe" racists make up a large amount of whites in the USA. Likely some of your friends, bosses or partners hold those same beliefs, would act in the same way as they would, and feel just as attacked as they do.

beecafe··on Why would a 21st century warplane shoot a balloon with a missile?
Not any, just the military ones.
beecafe··on Why would a 21st century warplane shoot a balloon with a missile?
That's the point. Letting adversaries overfly your country with their satellites is bad.
beecafe··on Why would a 21st century warplane shoot a balloon with a missile?
This precedent should be extended to overflying satellites.

beecafe··on Train CIFAR10 to 94% in under 10 seconds on a single A100
doesn't work due to requirement of online data augmentation like random crops and image distortions (for image model, loading is a non-issue for text). And a feature database is not going to help you if you just need to iterate over all the features.
beecafe··on Toroidal propellers: A noise-killing game changer in air and water
Those exist too! Every so often NASA tries it out.
beecafe··on Toroidal propellers: A noise-killing game changer in air and water
There are MHD ship drives like the one the submarine has! But they're very inefficient so far.
beecafe··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
This is a disgusting point of view. You view those who are different from you as subhuman. I bet you see people who wear their tradional non-Western clothing as icky, or poor people as dirty. Anyone not wearing a suit and tie is not worthy of your respect? And dare someone wear something comfortable, because they don't conform to YOUR norms they're somehow being disrespectful, when YOU are the one lacking the base decency to see other humans as worthy of respect.
beecafe··on Cruel optimism and lazy pessimism
The point is to change the structure and try to address systemic problems, rather than putting on your blinders.
beecafe··on A stack of feed-forward layers does surprisingly well on ImageNet
This paper came out after. You read the date wrong. The weird formatting and very short size also point to this. This paper is a clear rip-off and an instance of academic fraud.
