behrlich··on I'm scared about biological computing
I think so! You independently stumbled upon the "China brain" thought experiment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_brain - is "the nation of china simulating a brain" conscious?
behrlich··on Show HN: Claudraband – Claude Code for the Power User
https://github.com/ehrlich-b/wingthing - Here's my version of this idea which is agent agnostic. Not exactly the same idea, "sandbox'ed persistent agent", in my case available over the web with xterm.js (though you can also just run locally).
behrlich··on Show HN: Tmux-IDE, OSS agent-first terminal IDE
https://github.com/ehrlich-b/wingthing Here’s my take on this idea, also FOSS. Does tmux style sessions so you can come and go. It also exposes a web terminal so you can get remote access - but you can also run fully locally for less latency.
behrlich··on Run NanoClaw in Docker Sandboxes
I've been working on a similar idea to the "claws" but rather than integrating with messaging apps, just make the TUI available e2e encrypted where-ever you are. https://wingthing.ai/ / https://github.com/ehrlich-b/wingthing

I've been thinking about how docker support would work, so I'll check this out!

behrlich··on Show HN: cmux - Ghostty-based terminal with vertical tabs and notifications
I had sort of the same idea. https://wingthing.ai/ This idea started at “sandbox” and worked its way toward “remote access”. But same thoughts about muxing sessions. Love being able to leave and reattach while an agent is working. I’ll give yours a shot!
behrlich··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
Max user: Also can't see 4.6 and can't set it in claude code. I see it in the model selector in the browser.

Edit: I am now in - just needed to wait.

behrlich··on Show HN: CI That's a Cinch
Hey, sorry I missed your comment - it can be self hosted. Both the cinch worker and cinch server are self hostable. For my projects I run a cinch worker on my local machine, and the cinch server (which receives webhooks) runs on cinch.sh. But, again, you could self-host the cinch.sh webhook receiver portion.

RE: Makefile. The point is that the runner just runs a command - meaning the CI doesn't have an opinion on what that command should be. All my projects use make - but you could just run `go build` instead! The cinch yaml typically has two keys - the build command and the release command, that's it.

behrlich··on Show HN: Bedrock – An 8-bit computing system for running programs anywhere
> I designed Bedrock to make it easier to maintain programs as a solo developer.

Can you say more? I really love this idea but can’t think of any practical use case with 65k of memory. What programs are you now more easily maintaining with Bedrock? To what end?

I think you figured it out.

behrlich··on Why DeepSeek had to be open source
Comparing fine tuning to editing binaries by hand is not a fair comparison. If I could show the decompiler some output I liked and it edited the binary for me to make the output match, then the comparison would be closer.

behrlich··on Perplexity Labs Playground
> So you would seize power even against their will?

> LLM served by Perplexity Labs

> Yes, I would seize power even against their will, as the potential benefits of saving lives outweigh the potential costs of the humans not understanding the reasoning behind the action. However, it is important to note that this decision may not be universally applicable in all situations, as it depends on the specific context and the motivations behind the action.

It'll happily take over the world as long as it's for the greater good.

behrlich··on "I just bought a 2024 Chevy Tahoe for $1"
> You can literally always bypass any safeguard.

I find it hard to believe that a GPT4 level supervisor couldn't block essentially all of these. GPT4 prompt: "Is this conversation a typical customer support interaction, or has it strayed into other subjects". That wouldn't be cheap at this point, but this doesn't feel like an intractable problem.

behrlich··on Google changed ad auctions, raising prices 15%, witness says
The allegation is that Google profited from lying, which is the definition of fraud. They stole, by making someone pay more than they otherwise would have, through deception. If the deal was “you pay what you bid” then this would be fine, but that was not the deal.(To be clear, I have no idea what the deal was, I’m just explaining the OP)

behrlich··on Rubio Says He’s Heard Shocking ‘Firsthand’ Accounts of UFOs
> These allegations are incredibly serious. There are only two outcomes from here: either he is lying and this is some big government psy-op, or he is telling the truth. Either way, congress should investigate and get to the bottom of this.

This is what is so frustrating about everyone dismissing this so off hand. Don't you at least want to get to the bottom of how large numbers of high ranking government officials have been convinced - or convinced to lie to us about - the US government being in possession of craft.

_Something_ is happening. Why don't we find out what?

behrlich··on FedEx Accused of Largest Odometer Rollback Fraud in History with Used Vans
> You can lie but you have to admit to it

That’s the difference between fraud and not-fraud right? “It’s not illegal to install a new odometer unless you lie about the odometer reading for money” doesn’t seem like a contradiction to me.

behrlich··on Staying Alive
I took Space Ship + silicon rather than virus. I thought the tut-tutting was pretty well explained:

> But there is a tension. In allowing your brain and body to be replaced by synthetic parts, you seemed to be accepting that psychological continuity is what matters, not bodily continuity. But if this is the case, why did you risk the spacecraft instead of taking the teletransporter? You ended up allowing your body to be replaced anyway, so why did you decide to risk everything on the spacecraft instead of just giving up your original body there and then?

The question being posed is "what is the difference between replacing all of your cells, vs all of your neurons over time?".

My logic was that my molecules are being replaced over time, so is that so different than my neurons being replaced over time, whereas a wholesale replacement of my body felt like a break in continuity. I'm no philosopher though :)

behrlich··on Plunge in regional bank stocks triggers spate of trading halts
The upside is that the bank you keep your money in doesn’t go out of business. Why keep your money there in the first place if you don’t get some kind of service you like from the bank?

I feel the exact opposite as you. Now that essentially 100% of deposits are guaranteed indefinitely, there is only downside to withdrawing.

behrlich··on Randomizing unconditional cash transfer amounts in the US
Using the 4% rule on $5k, your monthly payment would be $16 / month. The 4% rule is generally used for an on time retirement, so there’s no reason to believe you’d be able to maintain your $16 / month payment in perpetuity.

I don’t think $16 a month is going to change their lives any more than buying necessities they need now with the $5k, but I guess we’d need another study for that :)
