belfthrow··on Quantitative Finance with OCaml
A lot of this is completely wrong for their Java comparisons.
belfthrow··on Java is fast, code might not be
Because in real life, real world applications software is large, long running and needs to be bulletproof. Clis are not powering the world's infrastructure via piped bash scripts. It really baffles me what people actually do as software engineers on here with some of the nonsense that gets thrown around.
belfthrow··on Java is fast, code might not be
Crac / aot cache / ready now all can address this. Not even considering native aot. Multiple low latency trading systems across market markers, hedge funds and ibs prove this. But people just want to compare it to building a cli tool in go or rust.
belfthrow··on Java is fast, code might not be
I really hate how completely clueless people on hn are about java. This is not, and has not been an issue for many many years in Java and even the most junior of developers know how to avoid it. But oh no, go and rust is alwaayssss the solution sure.

But hey the sensationalist comment you originally posted gets your lots of upvotes…
belfthrow··on Ghidra by NSA
I suppose they should be using rust yeah?
belfthrow··on The Codex App
Should just use javafx or swing. Take a leaf out of intellij which while it as it's own performance problems (although not from the fact of the ui framework) has a fantastic ui across Mac / windows / nix
belfthrow··on Anthropic acquires Bun
This is hn, where unless something is written in rust or zig usually, people will hate on it. They would rather pump a cli tool than any software of sizable scale.
belfthrow··on SQL Design Patterns (2010)
Java is a bad language for this compared to go? Is this legitimate advice on a serious programming blog. Pretty unbelievable honestly.
belfthrow··on I Built an Omni-Directional Ball-Wheeled Bike [video]
Wasteful? It's for entertainment on YouTube...what a nonsense take.
belfthrow··on The future of kdb+?
Not surviving more than 2 weeks in a QF role because of kdb, and then suggesting they should rewrite everything to LISP is one of the more HN level recidivous comments I think I have ever seen.
belfthrow··on The New Audi A3 Is Amess with In-Car Subscriptions
My Audi from 2018 has car play for free... this is absurd....
belfthrow··on A guide to home row mods
Anyone know if there's a good way to allow vial / qmk like customizations with a mac keyboard? I use things like auto shift on my custom splits, but would like to have some similar features on my mac keyboard.
belfthrow··on A guide to home row mods
Agreed. On a vial qmk build it was impossible. When remoting into work for citrix it also seemed to be considerably worse.
belfthrow··on Microsoft is retiring Visual Studio for Mac in 2024
From the crappy bolt on things required to make it anywhere close to a decent IDE, it is essentially vim with tons of incompatible plugins that continually conflict one and other.
belfthrow··on Java JEP 461: Stream Gatherers
its not quick haha.... clueless.
belfthrow··on The Oracle Java Platform Extension for Visual Studio Code
I find all these posts slamming java and suggesting to use all the either much smaller jvm languages or something like python / go / rust utterly hilarious. If you want to get paid the big bucks in a high col city, you are a java or c++ dev, simple as. Sure work on your smaller languages, more pay for the rest of us!
belfthrow··on The Oracle Java Platform Extension for Visual Studio Code
No he's saying that java gets the features implemented from the bytecode spec first. And you well know it, or maybe you have no idea and are just a kotlin fan boy...
belfthrow··on Fury – Fast multi-language serialization framework powered by JIT and Zero-copy
It's as much work as protobuf. How about Chronicle Wire, can you add that?
belfthrow··on Fury – Fast multi-language serialization framework powered by JIT and Zero-copy
Should still be added. Are are talking a lot about perfomance so this is where SBE shines. Worth comparing if you want to show of the numbers.
belfthrow··on Java 21: The Nice, the Meh, and the Momentous
1) is garbage. Since grade 6 you can run on 22 ea with no issues. Use toolchains, as they say on their docs.

2) no shit. What business user is every in their mind prioritising upgrading their language version? It's not up to them to push the upgrade. It's yours.

3) of course they are. People don't desire what they don't want. Invest in people who are actually interested in improvement of their software.

4)the java team have been pushing heavily via twitter / youtube / infoq / hacker news / other open jdk providers all the new features for every single java version during their 6 months release cycles. If your devs / your team don't know about it, then maybe again youre not encouraging people to want to improve on what they have, or take interest in the tech they work in.

I mean that is fine, do I give a shit what java version in using for my take home salary? No...but I enjoy using the newest, most interesting and useful tools. And you best believe those people are more attractive to other companies and you working on some 15 year old java 8 tech.

belfthrow··on Jlama (Java) outperforms llama.cpp in F32 Llama 7B Model
Could you link to some of the examples in your repo where you enforce the zero allocation? I don't see much reuse of the buffers, eg float buffers and there is quite a lot of array based heap allocation. Just for my own interest. Many thanks. Cool to see the use of the new vector api also.

belfthrow··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hey Peter. I am on an l1a (visa category eb3) when perm was filed.

Just had my 140 submitted and prio date is not yet current for 485. My company said they will apply for a circumstances based ead due to l1 expiry in June 2024.

Is it possible for me to move company 6 months after the 485 filing with the emergency ead for work auth, due to the l not being transferable?

I know there is a 6 month wait on the 485 to trigger ac21, is it worth me doing priority 140 processing or does this not factor in?

Many thanks.
