belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
If the user above got what he wished, it'd be 0.90. That's what I'm talking about. This is a topic where one needs to know how to read, my nagging friend.
belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Not sure, I think it may be more about half your women in their 40s staying single and childless vs 1% 50 years ago, but don't quote me on that!
belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
That's very obtuse, there is always time to make more CASH, but there isn't to reverse a culture where having 0 children is normal and encouraged.
belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
I agree! But I just like using them to drive points across. Practical examples drive points across much better than some generalizations that take 10x as many words to be expressed.

exactly. so in 2150, or 2200, or someday, it will be a problem. So yes, it is a problem even today. It's kind of why you don't stand on train tracks even if there are still 15 minutes.

Future problems need to be fixed, else you end up as the countries you listed, Korea and Germany. It's not that hard

People are people, they live their lives, and there is no mastermind behind them. That is a given. But there is a common culture and country wide patterns that can still be observed.
belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
I'm honestly very glad to hear it won't be too bad but I reaaaaallly do not really care about numbers, my point is much broader.

I'd prefer if it didn't have to go through this at all. Knowing you are headed for bad times isn't something to live with, it's something to fix. And it's not like the birth rates in each state are staying the same, they are actively dropping. The issue isn't just there, it's also getting worse.

belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Why? What's so bad about India? Their people are young and positive, the west is ancient and past its peak. It's a very simple point actually.
belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
Oops, I was a little too implicit.

made 40 years... before they (India) started developing.

Western countries were at the forefront of this already in the 80s. India, starting to develop much later, had a big time buffer to learn from that and at least attempt to avoid it.

belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
This is an hyperbole, yes. Replace the 100 million value with 300, 400, 500, and my point isnt going to change.
belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
True, let's put it this way then. In some time, there will be 1.2 billion >80 year olds and 100 million people under 18.

You see, I know it's hard to grasp for some, but everything is really relative.

belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
You said it yourself, nearly, so it's not something written in stone.

I can fault India (and, in particular, Modi) for repeating the same mistake all other western developed countries made 40 years before, yes.

belowavgiq··on How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent
India's ongoing growth, and overall the positive sentiment of the population, is such a breath of fresh air compared to the decadent west. I have had a few friends from there for almost a decade and the improvement has been huge. It's just a shame that you are also speedrunning population collapse. Modi completely ignoring the cratering birth rates under him is a real hero.
belowavgiq··on When did Google get so weird?
Yup, and this is my age range. I guess I should have specified, knowing the average age on HN is... just a little higher to say the least. But to a progressively lower extent it applies to older generations as well.
belowavgiq··on When did Google get so weird?
Wait wait wait, you are from an older generation, so yes it somewhat (older people here do see each other often even when married, and the middle/high school friends are often for life. moving out? ha) doesn't apply to you.

I am indeed quite a lot younger, and in my personal experience the social skills of many (yes, of course, not all) younger Americans have been absolutely destroyed by the internet and some other things that I can't mention.

Edit: oops I skimmed too fast and missed some parts.

belowavgiq··on When did Google get so weird?
Irrelevant nitpick, but it's definitely not "most". I'd argue it's only this common in some English speaking countries and maybe a few other Western ones. The looks I get from American friends when I tell them that yes I do see my (local) friends nearly every day, are quite funny.
belowavgiq··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Count me in. I'd rather be poor in the worst neighborhood (or village) in Nigeria but healthy than in a European mansion and unhealthy. Feel free to tell me all about how I can't understand, champion of the proletariat.
belowavgiq··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Uhhh, some nerve damage, news worthy? Ho qualche dubbio al riguardo.

Fellow italian here, let's not act like our third rate ERs never leave people suffering for hours without caring that it may have lasting consequences. I understand it's partially due to understaffing, but this is the reality. My dad had this happen to him as well. Thanks

belowavgiq··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Young southern europeans are in turn migrating north. Are Spain, Italy, Portugal not well off?

There is a saying. More is better. Morocco has issues with tourists and diaspora pricing out locals from houses to food even, but Algeria is an honestly good country all around. With its issues of course. But there is more to life than earning $$$.

Westerners forget the tiny detail that these countries are extremely young unlike them, hence why it feels like there are so "many" people.

Edit: oops, I glossed over the part about Israel. Trust me, it's still a billion times better than nothing, which is the case for the entire West.

Edit 2: Oh my oh my, I missed this too. I "loathe" European countries? Do I? I mildly not respect European populations for wiping themselves out. I cannot loathe land.

belowavgiq··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
So? How does the population being religious disprove the fact that they are developed and having children? Not to mention that I have listed around ~10 countries after Israel.

Uh... Meme-based? This is such an unserious argument I don't even know what I can possibly say to that.

How are they disconnected with the technology keeping them alive? All people, in GCC countries especially, are working to make 1st world development happen.

Implying that religious Jews or Muslims are stuck in the Bronze Age is ignoring reality. Most European development itself came from men of science who were Christian, I thought this apparent conflict of ideas was something taught in schools.

belowavgiq··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Well, if there are >0 developed countries that have solved this (Israel, the GCC, dare I say fairly well-off MENA countries like Jordan, Algeria, Morocco, etc., and to a minor degree Botswana) then this proves wrong the hypothesis that modern hyper-development must inherently mean population collapse.

Going purely by the evolution theory and natural selection, having so few children that there is a serious risk a population will disappear in a century or two, means losing. Needless to say, this is stupid. From the entire American continent, to Europe, India more recently, Thailand, China, the Koreas, Japan.

Africans, Arabs, and some non-Arab Muslim populations will carry the torch. Much respect for not falling into the trap.

belowavgiq··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
Everyone stupid enough to let that happen is.

There is a handful of developed countries where this is not an issue.

belowavgiq··on Minimal Phone 2
I agree, I like both. Thankfully for us, both are dead and the only options left are 19.5:9 or 20:9. Hooray!
belowavgiq··on Minimal Phone 2
The newer versions of are no longer based on Android. So it's either quirky VMs with hundreds of papercuts or nothing.

Huawei Global is still a thing, and in some markets they keep releasing phones using Android 12 and no GMS. That is probably even worse.

belowavgiq··on Nobody pays for FOSS, we can force them to
I don't know about you, but I personally really appreciate when people warn me in advance that something is going to be a waste of time.

"and I don't think that's right, and the distinction matters" Yeah right. lol

belowavgiq··on Minimal Phone 2
Huawei was this close to making the perfect 16:9 phone, now, in 2026. I would have gladly used all my apps in a half broken Android VM (they no longer use Android themselves).

It's too bad they had to be extreme about it and ruin it with a huge screen and a 5:3 aspect ratio. it's almost a cube.

belowavgiq··on An empirical study of harness design for coding agents
I'm going to cherry pick one example where newer models are noticeably improving at least in my experience.

What is a noticeable improvement with something that struggles to read a message longer than 200 characters without missing information in the middle, may be a 0.000000001% improvement with a model that... almost never misses info in the first place.

belowavgiq··on ZCode, the GLM coding agent, silently uploads your Git history
Just my thoughts on the site:

It's good that the objective is to have the model work as a helper, but that's what everyone can already do with CC or Codex as long as you don't ask to "write this entire x thing". It's also what a billion other, often vibecoded, harnesses claim they can do.

Why should I use yours, which also forces me off my existing subscriptions? Maybe it's (mostly) handwritten, so it's mindful efficient code instead of slop, and each adjustment was made through trial and error with current models? maybe it IS slop but at least you have a unique feature? and so on and so forth.

belowavgiq··on Run macOS Software on Linux
their AppKit implementation receives about 20-30 commits every 5 years. Cool project, but you are better off waiting for proprietary software manufacturers to release ARM64 builds (a lot of them do now) and patch the holes with FEX.

There is really no "they", all Nexus phones weren't made by Google. Hence why, the 5X aside, everyone has nice memories of them.
