benatkin··on The end of Microsoft Research's AI Frontiers group
I'm becoming more sympathetic to LeCun's views, but being able to train something that acts the tiniest bit like those who made the training data (authors, professors, researchers, etc) is an absolute juggernaut and will be for some time.
benatkin··on Devvm.dev: One VM for every project
Indeed, but this new niche project is trying to provide a streamlined setup. Upon closer inspection of the toolchains, for Node, Rust, Go, and Python, it shows that it tries to automatically configure them.

This sort of wrapping setup of VMs in a higher level project is encouraged by BinSquare, the creator of smol machines, as recently on X he has been touting its embeddability.

benatkin··on Anthropic IPO buyers see valuation as low as $1.1T
The non-anecdotal part is to me as interesting as the anecdotal part. The price of RAM has gone up a great deal which is going to make it harder for others to get this sweet setup that you have.
benatkin··on Devvm.dev: One VM for every project
This is something that could run on top of smolvm, if the authors chose it, rather than Lima/QEMU. It both sets up virtual machines and what goes into them, letting you chooose toolchains and coding agents. smolvm doesn't provide dev tool setup within a vm, though it does point to images that already have toolchains and agents installed.
benatkin··on Cloudflare 10Q for the quarterly period ended September 30, 2026
There's an interesting little tidbit about Deno.
benatkin··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
Driving uses a lot of energy. It's wasteful if you aren't getting a good use out of it (of which just driving around to relax could me considered a good use, but of which some manager requiring RTO might not be).
benatkin··on SOML – A Config Format for Humans
It's as much as a YAML fork as a TOML fork. I think each are emphasized the right amount.
benatkin··on Bunny CDN Security Incident
Someone who never should have been their vendor, due to closeness to Moscow. It's too bad, but I will probably look elsewhere.

benatkin··on Ghostty 1.4
Here's one such project: https://github.com/Dicklesworthstone/frankenterm

However, it is more focused on multiplexing.

benatkin··on Type Server Protocol
Indeed, this seemed not to happen to the same degree: https://ghuntley.com/fracture/

vscode forks were shown to be viable.

benatkin··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
Do you think those offering professional translation service were obsessed with AI? Or chess players? The rest of the world doesn't get to decide...
benatkin··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
I was editing when your reply came out. Nope. Luckily it's a family of technologies.
benatkin··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
Thanks for mentioning that. It reinforces my desire to avoid zstd because of its connection to Facebook.
benatkin··on Neckbeard – A DevOps/platform/SRE plugin for your agent
The guy in the image doesn't look very euphoric, not even in a subtle way. Sorry, not the neckbeard plugin I was looking for. Mine must be influenced by aalewis.
benatkin··on GLM-Legal
In the same sense as infinite jest.
benatkin··on Typesafe AI raises $870M at $7.5B
They weren't running on OpenAI, so nope.
benatkin··on What should we tell our students?
Confusing since it's on a terrytao's wordpress.com blog. I wonder if he's aware of the drama at Automattic.
benatkin··on Yes, and
It will be faster to understand it, which will make it less valuable. I think I could point something like this to a curious AI software builder without a CS degree and tell them to have AI explain it and they could make up a significant chunk of what they're missing by not having a CS degree. https://www.cs.yale.edu/homes/perlis-alan/quotes.html
benatkin··on Self-hosted HTTP tunnels with SSH and Nginx
You replace it with your domain.
benatkin··on Getting the most out of Opus 5.5 in Claude and Claude Code
These example prompts seem soulless. Should I feed this document to another LLM that's OK with me being informal so I can have it give me prompts that Claude will find acceptable without contorting myself to talk like this?
benatkin··on Apple Pass Designer
OK, NFTs are like loyalty cards too then. Because these digital wallets don't need to be like physical cards. That's just an artificial design constraint.
benatkin··on Apple Pass Designer
I mean this design aspect. To me it felt like it was a bit over the top, and I could imagine them to start making limited run series of them. Looking at it again, it says that there are templates, so maybe this art was made by designers, rather than AI images generated on the fly, but I imagined that they were the latter.
benatkin··on Apple Pass Designer
These are reminiscent of NFTs, they are things you can collect, mass generated.
benatkin··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
I doubt that with the speed of thought dramatically increasing due to AI, that the door will stay closed just because it's being closed now. That decision will be revisited.
benatkin··on Meta VR Glasses
There isn't a very direct comparison of Oculus products to game consoles like PlayStation, Nintendo, XBox, or those in the distant past. It is interesting, and they have a lot of the same market forces at play, but I don't think they behave by the same rules.
benatkin··on Meta VR Glasses
CV1 was as a Facebook subsidiary. Acquired 2014-07-21, CV1 announced January 2016 and released March 2016. https://techcrunch.com/2014/07/21/facebooks-acquisition-of-o... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oculus_Rift_CV1
benatkin··on Meta VR Glasses
It wasn't though, a full price would have been more, to cover not just components and assembly but the cost of R&D.
benatkin··on Meta VR Glasses
Not really. Pre-release baked into the name.
benatkin··on Meta VR Glasses
Neither qualifies.
benatkin··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
I'd like to know how to type it with voice dictation.
