bengl3rt··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (August 2024)
Location: NorCal

Remote: Strongly preferred

Willing to relocate: Happy to occasionally visit an office somewhere in the world

Technologies: Native code, on embedded systems, especially Apple platforms (C/Obj-C/Swift). Latency-sensitive systems that exercise local inference (CoreML/MPS), including LLMs, and imaging (CoreVideo/Metal). Less recently, device drivers (Windows & Linux) and firmware (PIC/MIPS).

bengl3rt··on Writing an NVMe Driver in Rust [pdf]
I only read the paper (and the code in the paper) but not the complete source code, so maybe this would become clearer if I had, but...

Does Rust fundamentally guarantee that if you make a struct, its fields will lay out in memory in the order that you defined them? Can it be used to interact with APIs (really ABIs) who expect a C struct (or pointer to one)?

I think my main frustration with stuff like Go and Swift in this case is that their structs are not binary-compatible with C structs in this way because they rearrange things to be better aligned/packed/whatever.

bengl3rt··on MediaMTX: Zero-dependency server for live video and audio streams
rstp-simple-server is fantastic, I use it for all kinds of stuff and appreciate how easy it is to deploy. More software should eschew having a million dependencies and focus on doing one thing WELL :)
bengl3rt··on Quicssh: SSH over QUIC
Have you succeeded at using quicat to do what this is doing?
bengl3rt··on Seven years on, what do we know about the disappearance of flight MH370? (2021)
"Before Fariq can attempt to get back into the cockpit, Zaharie reaches up and flips the pressurization switch, cutting off bleed air to the cabin. The airplane rapidly begins to depressurize."

I really want to believe that a single switch doesn't control whether people in the back of the plane can breather or not...

bengl3rt··on Why are there not more freelance testers out there?
Some friends of mine have actually made a business out of this over at http://testloft.com

From what I understand the phone won't stop ringing so clearly there is strong demand for something like this out there.

bengl3rt··on Stalled Out on Tesla’s Electric Highway
Off topic, but...

Luxury car rental company? Please tell me more (like do you have a website??)

I ask because I know of a couple of luxury car rental companies, but there is one ore more things about each of them that make them exceedingly unpleasant to deal with. I would be interested to try doing business with a luxury car rental company that is run by people who also read HN - seems to be a good signal for not-totally-fucked-up business practices.

bengl3rt··on Is San Francisco The Brooklyn To Silicon Valley's Unbuilt Manhattan?
I have lived there in the past. Now prefer the much-maligned suburbs (specifically, Mountain View).

Uber and Lyft and self-driving cars will shortly solve drinking and driving and then my final complaint about the suburbs will be gone.

bengl3rt··on Is San Francisco The Brooklyn To Silicon Valley's Unbuilt Manhattan?
San Francisco is charming, yet now grossly-expensive.

Except it's not charming at all... it's much colder than the rest of California (it honestly feels like a different planet), MUNI absolutely sucks compared to any transit system in the civilized world (NYC/Europe/parts of Asia), and the homeless problem is the worst I've seen in any major urban center.

San Francisco has a long way to go before I'd consider it a world-class city.

bengl3rt··on OS X emulation layer for Linux
This is of great interest to me because I've always wanted to run this...

http://cycling74.com/whatismax/

On one of these:

http://www.museresearch.com/products/receptor-vip.php

Designing live performance environments in Max is awesome, but laptops just are not designed for the rigors of the road. They are delicate creatures that stand in awkwardly, at best, for musical instruments. Max running on the Receptor would be incredible, and hopefully not too challenging considering the environment is largely self-contained with very few external dependencies.

bengl3rt··on The Root Kit
Will do! I used to be pretty active in the sound scene (mostly live/acoustic recording) in the Bay but have been away for a couple years. I'm looking forward to returning and getting back into it. :)
bengl3rt··on On Heroku and 2012
A better question is, why don't some of the reasons that it's so great to work for Heroku symbiotically trickle up to the behemoth parent company?
bengl3rt··on The Root Kit
Do you have any advice for someone looking to get involved (as an actor and/or a sound guy) with the Bay Area indie film scene? I was on a local mailing list for a couple years called "Low/No Budget films" or something but it seems to have fizzled.
bengl3rt··on NUI: style your iOS app with style sheets
I'm really glad this is open source. I intend to make use of it in any new apps I start, and contribute back any bug fixes or improvements.

As it happens, I was going to build something like that for an app I'm due to start tomorrow, but now I don't have to.

bengl3rt··on Build an iOS App on Heroku in 10 Minutes
Sometimes the app is not a strict tree of view controllers, but rather a graph containing some cycles. It is here that the whole metaphor of the navigation controller and the visual tools that Xcode gives you to automate it kind of break down and you end up writing lots of hairy custom code to manage your transitions.

Sometimes things are presented modally here but get navigated to normally over there - and once again you're mixing metaphors, implementing some navigation in the storyboard and some of it in code.

I thought the same thing would be true with Auto Layout, but luckily that one seems to have been a bit more "baked" when it shipped, insofar as I've not had any trouble implementing complex views with it WITHOUT ever writing any code.

bengl3rt··on Show HN: an app to help your family be on time
Unfortunately, people are sensitive about this subject, often fiercely defensive or even in denial about their own chronic lateness...

Still I wish them the best of success and I hope this changes lives in a big way like I know it has the potential to do.

bengl3rt··on BMW Invests in Embark (YC S11)
This makes a lot of sense. The more people use public transit (because it becomes much less painless thanks to apps like Embark), the more you reduce congestion on the road, the more fun it is to drive your BMW.

Congratulations to the team!

bengl3rt··on Motor Trend Car of the Year: Tesla Model S
Value is linked to price. Tesla is doing the public a disservice by encouraging the notion that the Model S starts at $49k, when it really starts closer to $70 in order to approach a conventional car in utility.

Do you get $70k worth of car when you spend $70k on a Model S? Absolutely. You get something that can hold a candle to if not surpass the $70k BMW M5 in every way. But the curve isn't linear - the $49k barebones Model S is nowhere near as useful as the BMW 528 you'd get for the same money.

bengl3rt··on Motor Trend Car of the Year: Tesla Model S
Honestly, that puts it solidly into "more than I can ever imagine paying for a car" territory. It's also too big - I can't imagine street parking a behemoth like that in San Francisco.

I quite like the Acura TSX - small, luxurious, $30k. I'd happily pay $40 for Tesla's equivalent.

bengl3rt··on Motor Trend Car of the Year: Tesla Model S
The $49k base price is totally misleading. To get the "supercharger" access that makes road trips possible, you're out another $12k at least ($10k 60kWh battery plus $2k "supercharger" fee). Nav is $4k. Putting the rapid charger into your home (if you have one and don't park in an apartment complex/on the street) is another four figures.

All this to match the performance and luxury of the Acura TL I could get for $40k.

Is it really the best car in the world if it's impractical or out of reach for most people?

EDIT: Yes, I know all car manufacturers use a deceptively low base price and then nail you on "options" like air conditioning. Frankly I've often wished there was a law, or at least a gentleman's agreement in the auto industry, mandating that something can be an "option" for a maximum ten years before it's considered part of the basic accoutrements in a modern car and gets rolled in to all units shipped. Also, Tesla prides themselves outwardly on not being like the rest of the auto industry, but inherits its worst practice and magnifies it tenfold - base price $49 but for something usable you're pushing $70.

bengl3rt··on Parse Partners with Twilio and Mailgun for the Release of Cloud Modules
Cool! That's what I was looking for.

Yes, it's a bit buried. I missed the dropdown on the right. Speaking of Twilio, their docs are very good for stuff like this. They use a big obvious segmented control for switching between XML and JSON, for example.
