They also sent out free distro CDs. That helped convince me this new fangled Linux thing might be legitimate.

Christ that was 2008.18 years ago. My Linux 'experiment' is old enough to vote

Frankenstein, the first scifi, well first I'm aware of, isn't describing a utopia.

I don't know if it's selection bias, but the unabashedly positive sci fi of the mid 20th century seems to be more of a blip than a pattern.

benj111··on Sales of sub-€25,000 electric car models set to rise sevenfold
The tariffs are anti dumping measures.

So you put the tariff on Chinese imports to make the price comparable to domestic manufacturers so they can compete, then give the 10k euro on all EVs sold.

benj111··on Sales of sub-€25,000 electric car models set to rise sevenfold
I don't know why they don't just tax electricity?

Do it like taxes, have a low rate for the first X kwhs then increase after. Great aunt Mildred gets to heat her home, your neighbour that has a massive house, EVs, jacuzzi etc etc pays more.

EVs are always going to be an outsized user of electricity, and it's unclear to me why someone's jacuzzi should be heated vat free.

benj111··on Sales of sub-€25,000 electric car models set to rise sevenfold
I agree with what you're saying, I also suspect that governments will tax ics at a certain point, not only to get rid of them but also because they can get away with it because the whole population isn't impacted.

So I'm concerned about a time where the rich have EVs, the poorest haven't, and the government are taxing ics.

I'd like to see some kind of Keighley car standard to get cheaper EVs on the market. Here in Europe we have quadricycles, but the speeds are limited to only make them useful for cities.

benj111··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
I don't think that's the only element.

We saw the same kind of thing with electronics. I'm old enough to remember Sony being the brand to have. But they never really made to jump to digital (or wherever you want to draw the line).

Problem is, EVs are disruptive. Many car companies don't want them because it involves too much change to how they want to do business. They'll try to change when it's too late.

benj111··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
Your point? In some countries it's easier to get a cross bow.
benj111··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
20kw would be enough to maintain the battery though? So you could halve that and 'only' double the range in the worst case.
benj111··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
Well considering the point of it is the make orbit, it would be a bit useless if it didn't.

Would HN describe a huge program that didn't do the thing it was designed to do a "feat of engineering"?

benj111··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
The question is about energy payback. Generating the energy required to create it.

Your comment, if I'm looking at the correct one refers to electricity prices.

benj111··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
No? I'm a Brit, it's a British newspapers.

It's equivalent to saying it's "disgustingly cheap"

benj111··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
Do you think they haven't always needed to predict a cold snap?

Here in the UK they needed to watch the TV because a break or end of a large football match would cause a spike in demand.

benj111··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
How is buying energy from a probably unsavoury regime 'participating' in the economy?

Not sending that money to said regime allows you to spend it locally.

benj111··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
1 to 3 years payback for energy.
benj111··on 'Offensively cheap': solar power is looking up
>That and the subsidy, rare earth, power output decrease, and China manufacturing problems (them undermining the market with intentionally low prices to kill US solar

But solar panels last a long time. If china starts turning the screws tomorrow, current panels will still work.

You're basically complaining about a Chinese subsidy, and potential issues that we will have years to address, if they become issues.

benj111··on Where has Construction Automation been successful?
You could use the metaphor of sealed units in modern cars that can't be repaired.

And houses are expected to last longer than cars.

I'm not saying you're wrong person se, but I disagree with the analogy

benj111··on Where has Construction Automation been successful?
They did this a bit in Britain post war.

It wasn't and isn't particularly popular. I don't know the precise reasons, but I suppose the fact it was tried, and didn't work says something.

benj111··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
>actually it's better than most rich countries after controlling for race/ethnicity

Can an American explain what this is supposed to be saying? Sounds like a right wing sound byte.

Are black people supposed to be inherently less healthy???

benj111··on I fixed a tractor using John Deere's self-repair service. Farmers aren't sold
Well this is the problem with farming and politics.

You have a long tail of poor farmers, and a few very large powerful farmers.

Thus you have the politics of the small family farm barely making a living, and large industrial monocultures at the same time, and people picking and choosing which, as and when it suits.

benj111··on Dutch central bank moves share of gold from U.S., Canada to London
You could make the argument that leaving gold there also leaves them ammunition for later. The threat of removing the rest is also a useful tool. Personally I'd be getting out of all US bond holdings and investments and making sure the banks are limiting exposed too, well personally I have. Keeping investments in the US, in US debt is just irresponsible at the moment.
benj111··on Dutch central bank moves share of gold from U.S., Canada to London
The jewellery market stems from the 'inherent' value thing though.

I think the OPs point is that gold is an arbitrary metal that has been infused with value, just like fiat currency is some paper that has been infused with value. Paper also has 'useful' uses, but that isn't underpinning the value of fiat currency.

Yes, I'll grant that gold is stable in that it doesn't corroded , it's somewhat rare, etc, so it is better suited than other metals, there's still no intrinsic reason to value it though.

I don't think this is a hill that either the op or I is willing to die on though. It is an observation of human behaviour, rather than a statement that gold _should not_ be the world store of value.

benj111··on Dutch central bank moves share of gold from U.S., Canada to London
There's a good film about Norway getting their gold out ahead of the Nazis. Gold Run I think it's called.
