bfmalky··on Anthropic warns models 'months away' from self-replication on smart devices
What is Anthropic on about here? You can only just run decent models on high powered laptops. I do not understand how they are ever going to run on a simple device like a router, or an oven.
bfmalky··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time Could Harm Sleep and Mental Health, Analysis Says
Yeah, ok. If you are working on an airplane, or a submarine this doesn't apply.
bfmalky··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time Could Harm Sleep and Mental Health, Analysis Says
It is completely ridiculous to say that someone working 9-5 doesn't see any daylight during that period. Go for a walk at lunch time.

Conversely, getting up in the pitch dark and leaving the house in the pitch dark when the sun isn't going to rise for another hour is a horrible prospect and I hope I never have that inflicted on me. The evidence in the article is clear: our bodies need light in the morning more than we need it in the evening. Yes, winter sucks in northern latitudes, but we've just got to make use of the little daylight as best as we can. The flip side is by using DST we get these lovely long evenings in the summer.

bfmalky··on Permanent Daylight Saving Time Could Harm Sleep and Mental Health, Analysis Says
It is dark, but it is starting to get light. If it isn't even going to start getting light for another hour after you leave the house you might as well be getting up in the middle of the night. It would be horrible.

bfmalky··on The Global Fertility Crisis Is Worse Than You Probably Think
> “Only two things are important right now in life: fertility and deep learning,” the University of Pennsylvania economist Jesús Fernández-Villaverde said at the conclusion of a recent lecture. “Everything else is noise."

And the climate crisis. Why does it seem like everyone has forgotten about the climate crisis recently? AI isn't going to fix it.

Yes, and the reading experience is great because there are no ads. Feels miraculous it exists.
bfmalky··on UK government replaces Palantir software with internally-built refugee system
I recently joined a civil service organisation as a software developer. The organisation is currently going through an intense hiring process to replace the army of contractors they've had for years. This has been made possible by applying a 'market uplift' to the usual civil service salary bands to make the roles competitive in the tech industry. It seems to be going pretty well, although the organisation was already quite tech focused and has a well established engineering culture. Hopefully it will be seen as a success and replicated by other departments as seems like the sensible way to get stuff done to me.
bfmalky··on UK government replaces Palantir software with internally-built refugee system
As someone who has recently joined the civil service as a software developer I have to say the working environment in the organisation I joined is pretty great. Salary is not high, but pension, holidays, working hours and flexibility are all very good.

bfmalky··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
Hype would not cause a price increase in this case. The value of bitcoin is partly due to scarcity. 1.1m previously inaccessible bitcoins suddenly becoming liquid would cause a drop in price, even if they were sold slowly. It could also cause panic selling as it might indicate the wallets have been brute force cracked.
bfmalky··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
Sure. So just a case of 'trust me bro' on both sides. What could possibly go wrong?
bfmalky··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
You are very lucky to have a strong circadian rhythm that doesn't require light in the morning then. Not all of us work that way. If there is no light in the morning I find it very hard to get up and function. Where I live, if we adopted permanent summer time the sun wouldn't rise until 9:45 in the dead of winter. I couldn't handle that many hours of complete darkness at the start of the day.
bfmalky··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
Or, how about we alter the clocks by +/- an hour twice a year to maximise the amount of useful daylight? Get the best of both worlds.

bfmalky··on Microsoft's big lie: Your computer is fine, and you don't need to buy a new one
I would love to replace Lightroom, but unfortunately the alternatives just aren't as good.

There are good alternatives to Ableton, but once you get to know a DAW it is hard to switch. And running a DAW with an ecosystem of 3rd party VST plugins and low level access to audio hardware on Wine sounds like a recipe for a bad time, but I confess I haven't tried it.

So, yes, these things are possible, but it is still easier to just use Windows.

bfmalky··on Microsoft's big lie: Your computer is fine, and you don't need to buy a new one
Yes, the bottom tier MacBook Air is about £1k, but only comes with a 256gb SSD. You can get a decent windows laptop for about that price with 1tb of storage and 32gb of memory. A similar spec Mac is close to £3k. CPU wise they are all fine for real-time audio, but the extra storage really matters.
bfmalky··on Microsoft's big lie: Your computer is fine, and you don't need to buy a new one
I can't run Ableton or Lightroom on Linux, and Macs are almost 3x the cost of a similar spec'ed windows laptop.

The apps are quite specific to me, but I imagine there are similar killer apps for other windows users.

bfmalky··on Tesla deliveries down 43% in Europe while EVs are up 31%
I don't think it is his DOGE antics that are affecting the european sales though, I think it was the Nazi salute. That went down very badly this side of the Atlantic.

bfmalky··on Mixxx: GPL DJ Software
In Rekordbox's case Pioneer have restricted the jogwheel mapping to Pioneer hardware only. So, you pretty much need Pioneer hardware to use Rekordbox. And seeing as Pioneer decks are almost industry standard in clubs and you need Rekordbox to organise your playlists, they have the DJ hardware market sewn up. Which is very frustrating because Rekordbox has to be the most resource intensive (& therefore inefficient) DJ software available.
bfmalky··on Why are UK electricity bills so expensive?
That's the annual figure. But just for electricity. Most UK homes are heated with gas, and many have gas stoves, so the average kWh annual gas figure is much higher (~12,000kWh).
bfmalky··on Why are UK electricity bills so expensive?
This is such a weird take. I have no idea where you are getting your ideas from, but I don't know if you've heard of this thing we have in the UK called 'the class system'. Poor people are definitely not worshipped in the UK. And the wealthy do generally like to demonstrate their wealth in the usual ways (cars, homes, holidays, schooling, etc), so I'm wondering where you've got this idea that people in the UK somehow romanticise poverty.
bfmalky··on Why are UK electricity bills so expensive?
What a bizarre thing to say.

I guess there are some examples of self sabotage, such as Brexit, but no, on the whole people in the UK do not choose to be poor. Like any nation we are at the mercy of the outcomes of the decisions of our politicians and larger global effects that are out of our control.

Also, there are plenty of wealthy people in the UK. You do know that right? The UK is still around 6th in the nominal GDP rankings, so not quite an economic basket case (yet).

I'd also like to quibble with this assertion the author makes at the end of the article:

This is very much not true. Subtractive and FM synthesis are still very widely used.

Also are you me? Except I had a 486sx and I tried in vain to persuade my parents to buy a maths co-processor for it. It would have probably saved them money in the long run from electricity bills.

Some of my first programming was writing QBasic programs to generate povray scene files.
