bhaavan··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
Gitlab and Github look like they are forked from the same branch. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/02/09/gitlab-layoffs-company-to-cu...
bhaavan··on Google hired union-busting consultants to convince employees “unions suck”
It's hard to believe that people working in one of the most seek-ed/desired jobs in the Valley / tech world, are unaware of how things might be elsewhere.
bhaavan··on 1.1.1.1 for Families
This was published on `01-April-2020`. So was it a joke or was it not?
bhaavan··on Much ado about NULL: An introduction to virtual memory
The follow up post: https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/post/much-ado-about-null-expl...
bhaavan··on Please log in with router's password
On a side not, it's super annoying when you want to log in into your router, and google chrome auto completes / suggests it with 192.168.l.l, or ends up doing a google search for 192.168.0.1.
bhaavan··on Are dynamic languages going to replace static languages? (2003)
boolean answer = No;
bhaavan··on Covid-19: India excess deaths cross four million, says study
This article was specifically a claim about the number of deaths.
bhaavan··on The long history of 'Bombay time' and resistance to colonial rule
Hopefully this inspires people to get rid of daylight savings time, which is rather an archaic concept in the current day and age.
bhaavan··on Apple's iCloud+ “VPN”
Does this mean that all DDoS mitigation techniques need to exist before the exit node of this traffic? Which in turn mean, that everyone needs to outsource their DDoS mitigation to Apple.

Also the corollary would be, that anyone who is able to bypass the protection mechanisms Apple has in place to control DDoS, can use it to DDoS a service like Google, Microsoft and get the entire service banned for all iCloud+ users. Right?

bhaavan··on Apple's iCloud+ “VPN”
My guess is one of the major reasons for having the exit nodes in the same geo location as entry nodes is to have continuous operations in China. Without this constraint, they would have allowed chinese consumers to access the free web, which would ban them instantaneously.

I don't think Apple cares as much about video content providers, though.

bhaavan··on FaceTime on the web requires Chrome or Edge, no mention of Firefox
How does this happen? AV1 encoding codec was still work in progress, and most chips don't support any hardware acceleration for this. Can we get reasonable frame rates on core CPU for av1 encoding already?
bhaavan··on Google is officially releasing Fuchsia OS, starting with a first-gen Nest Hub
So is this Zircon kernel based? Or just fancy name for linux?
bhaavan··on Why are there so many Canadians in India?
A lakh is 0.1 Million. What's your point?
bhaavan··on Facebook does not plan to notify half-billion users affected by data leak
nope
bhaavan··on Facebook does not plan to notify half-billion users affected by data leak
Well this breach is an old breach from 2019. People should stay up to date with security breaches.
bhaavan··on Booking.com fined €475k for reporting data breach too late
It may be a boring dystopia, but, you can't be fined for the same crime over and over again, can you? https://www.dw.com/en/facebook-data-on-millions-of-user-acco...
bhaavan··on Intel Processor Names, Numbers and Generation List
Apple believes simplicity, but where did it lead them? iPhone 4,5,6,7,8 was good. But now we have have iPhone 12 Pro Max Pink
bhaavan··on Product Manager vs. Product Marketing Manager vs. Product Owner
"Getting out of the building" in metmorphical send might give you view from people / customers you can visit. This is likely to be a biased sample, and unrepresentative of the true customer.

Running A/B tests is IMO, a good proxy, to understand customers unbiased binary views on feature changes, and objectively better.

bhaavan··on Gentoo Linux
btw, I use Arch
bhaavan··on Gam-COVID-Vac phase 3 trial results: 91·6% efficacy and well tolerated
91.6% is a good efficacy. Do they have plans to test it against other variants (E501Y mutation)? Ideally this + the adenovirus based AZD122 seems to be the best combination of (efficacy, affordablility, and logistically feasibility) end for the pandemic. https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/coronavirus-why-combining-... is another such article which talks about it.
bhaavan··on Shorting and Indian capital markets
A lot of movement in GME was driven by call options, which is generally available in all markets. However, absence of overnight short positions would definitely diminish the trigger GME needed to get short squeezed and become volatile in the first place.
bhaavan··on Europe’s telcos want ‘open’ 5G networks
Reliance Jio, a major player in India, is working on a OpenRAN based solution too [1]. Airtel, one of it's rivals is considering a similar approach , potentially joining in the efforts.

bhaavan··on Facebook Reports Third Quarter 2020 Results [pdf]
They specifically exclude those numbers from "people on the Family products".
bhaavan··on Dutch Ethical Hacker Logs into Trump’s Twitter Account
They could phrase it like please use complex passwords + 2fa, though. It's not their fault if people are stupid.
bhaavan··on RC – The Plan 9 Shell (c. 1990) [pdf]
What does rc stand for, and how did we get bashrc and zshrc as config files for bash?
bhaavan··on DDR5 Is Coming: First 64GB DDR5-4800 Modules from SK Hynix
A casual user like you ends up using quite complex compute on the cloud, when you watch a video on youtube, scroll a newsfeed, and make an airline booking. Some of the advanced complexities of those tasks, when programmed well by good engineers, can become feasible with this. All the Machine Learning related buzzwords exist mainly because they have only now become computationally feasible. You never know what will come next.
bhaavan··on Modi government to set up app store alternative to Google Play, Apple App Store
I would argue that an App Store, on mobile has helped avoid virus, and malware on phones, unlike how Windows was able to contain it. Having a trusted App Store by a company, who understands security, and has a financial backing to commit to a secure system, is beneficial all the way down.
bhaavan··on Ask HN: Good Resources on Voice Encryption?
https://www.gstatic.com/duo/papers/duo_e2ee.pdf is a paper on video encryption by duo. It is pretty good. I assume the audio encryption problem is only a subset of this problem.
bhaavan··on Uber wants to cut costs by shifting its engineering to India
A significant portion of the current SV crowd on H1b, is a product of the indian education system.
bhaavan··on Ask HN: Should I buy Mac book Pro now or wait for ARM?
My guess is only the lower end macs will move to ARM till atleast the Apple 14z or most likely Apple A15z. Macbook Pro will be as is for a while. This is about 2 years too far out.

Also intel should be supported for a couple of years once the new ARMs are out, and you wouldn't be obsolete till the lifetime of your laptop. At the end, you may even end up with a Apple memorabilia.
