bhaile··on Samsung UK admits you can’t disable ads on Samsung smart TV
I use this [1] and never seen an ad on my LG TV. Its only for Smart TVs. It blocks all the major TV ad networks too but can't tell how successful it is on other TVs since I only have LG.

bhaile··on When will Google kill Stadia?
I want flexibility that includes quality games with quality graphics. I'm not looking for high-end gaming PC quality (which I used to own) but close to it. Stadia hits that for me. I play it on TV and laptop depending where I am.

Gaming PCs and consoles will be around for a long time as they serve a market. I hope Stadia builds on their market fit and to become another platform widely used.

bhaile··on Who’s Making All Those Scam Calls?
Check out Jim Browning's videos [1] He records what he does through hacking into the scammer's computers to even record their webcams. He documents it all and even contacts victims if they are in the middle of being scammed when he is monitoring it.

Place to share these scams and phone numbers so others can harass these scammers. [2]

You need to create a new profile with the stable release.

How to create a new profile. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-...

Install the stable version but don't run it yet. Then follow the instructions to start the Profile Manager when Firefox is closed. If you need to recover data from your old profile, the link above has instructions too.

bhaile··on Apple reportedly dropped plan for encrypting backups after FBI complained (2020)
Good point. Pasting the relevant section and the explanation why they chose to implement it that way.

--

Messages in iCloud also uses end-to-end encryption. If you have iCloud Backup turned on, your backup includes a copy of the key protecting your Messages. This ensures you can recover your Messages if you lose access to iCloud Keychain and your trusted devices. When you turn off iCloud Backup, a new key is generated on your device to protect future messages and isn't stored by Apple.

bhaile··on Why can’t you buy a good webcam?
Didn't know about this company but looking at their history here[1], they used to sell under the brand name Nanao in the US. Nanao made great monitors with consistent high reviews.

bhaile··on Facebook Q3 2020
Per the PDF.

"Our third quarter 2020 effective tax rate was 4%, which reflects a one-time income tax benefit of $913 million related to the effects of a tax election to capitalize and amortize certain research and development expenses for U.S. income tax purposes.Excluding this tax benefit, our effective tax rate would have been 11 percentage points higher and our diluted EPS would havebeen $0.31 lower."

bhaile··on Airline pilots landing at LAX report “a guy in jetpack” flying alongside them
Yes. One of the greatest perks of United that they eventually phased out.

You'd tune your headset to Channel 9 on most aircraft and list to ATC just between the tower and your plane. I'd listen to it many times just to understand when we'd get a delay, maintenance issue, airport slowness..etc.

bhaile··on Alphabet’s Chief Legal Officer Stepping Down Amid Investigation
Interesting comment from Bill Maris from Axios.

Bill Maris, who founded Google's venture capital arm and reported directly to Drummond before quitting in 2016, tells Axios...

"The news of David Drummond leaving Google today brings to mind a quote from one of my most favorite creatures. 'At an end, your rule is. And not short enough, it was.' I had been asked in the past why I left Google in 2016, and I have never really commented on that. David Drummond is the reason I left Google. I simply could not work with him any longer. It’s that simple. We have very, very different ideas about how to treat people, and this was a long time coming."[1]

bhaile··on New airplane seat design to make it easier to sleep in economy
"As with many other airlines, some of our premium seats have in-flight entertainment systems that came with cameras installed by the manufacturer," a United Airlines spokesperson said. bhaile··on Scott's Cheap Flights: Growing a small side project into a booming business
Some deals require specific starting and end destinations to work properly with a specific carrier. Others can require a stopover in a certain city before continuing on.

The really good deals will even be site specific. All this can be done via good expertise. With scraping and this type of logic, you'd get blocked quickly from the major sites.
