biggestfan··on Omacom Foundation launches with $8M
I don't really get Omarchy, it seems like the hype is about "sensible defaults" when those defaults include a bunch of random paid software and links to websites DHH likes? (Plus all of 37signals offerings, of course.) I'm sure people use some of them, but I don't praise Android phones for preinstalling Facebook.

biggestfan··on Resetting Xbox
> Of course those last few prices were 90/00's

Two years ago, you could get an XBOX/Switch for 300, or a PS/Steam Deck for 400. Granted, the PS and XBOX were digital only. But now the cheapest XBOX is 500, the Switch 2 will soon also be 500, the PS5 starts at 600, and the Steam Deck is 789. Things have been going up slowly, but the last year has been absolutely killer.

biggestfan··on Dostoyevsky isn't difficult
What's a book you would recommend instead? I quite like what I've read from those authors but I would be interested in something with a different appeal.
biggestfan··on YouTube now world's largest media company, topping Disney
That happens if you close the app while on a Short. Otherwise it opens to the homepage.
biggestfan··on Elon Musk pushes out more xAI founders as AI coding effort falters
I disagree, I find that the grok replies are terrible product UX. Not only do they clog up the replies of every popular post, they're also constrained to extremely short answers with no sources. The community notes system, while also flawed in its own ways, is at least not nearly as disruptive and usually provides a link.

Trying to make social media a source of truthful information is always an uphill battle and doubly so for X.

biggestfan··on Bluesky 2025 Transparency Report
So ~3 million DAU? Would you consider publishing your own statistics?
biggestfan··on Can you use GDPR to circumvent BlueSky's adult content blocks?
The age verification is client side and can easily be bypassed with a third party client or even with a userscript https://gist.github.com/mary-ext/6e27b24a83838202908808ad528...

Bluesky's apps have the verification, but everything else using the protocol can just not implement it.

biggestfan··on Claude for Chrome
According to their own blog post, even after mitigations, the model still has an 11% attack success rate. There's still no way I would feel comfortable giving this access to my main browser. I'm glad they're sticking to a very limited rollout for now. (Sidenote, why is this page so broken? Almost everything is hidden.)
biggestfan··on Build Log: Macintosh Classic
Are these old computers viable to use daily? Is there any advantage over using an emulator on more modern hardware? (Obviously not the point of this project.)
biggestfan··on Making LLMs Cheaper and Better via Performance-Efficiency Optimized Routing
Between these kinds of optimizations, improved data center efficiency, and smaller models being more capable, I wonder how long it will be before someone manages to make a profitable AI business. Maybe when they race to train better models slows down and they don't need to constantly upgrade capacity.
biggestfan··on ChatGPT is pulling from Google Search to answer your questions
Two questions in my mind:

1. Why is Google helping their largest competitor here?

2. What's does this mean for the OpenAI/Microsoft partnership?

biggestfan··on What about using rel="share-url" to expose sharing intents?
Does anyone even use share buttons? I always just copy the link, and it seems that anyone I see sharing things does the same. It feels more like a way for the social media companies to advertise/track, and those sites have been sending less and less traffic for years, so I wonder why every site still has them.
biggestfan··on Unity reintroduces the Runtime Fee through its Industry license
I would guess it's because of regulatory compliance. You really don't want to release slots with a major payout but, and if you do, you want to be able to throw the blame at Unity.
biggestfan··on Building Bluesky comments for my blog
They did this for a few years (specifically selling domains to use as a username), not sure if they do anymore.

They also sold a bunch of shirts as a stunt against Meta earlier this year, and the shirt sales were more revenue than the domains had been.

biggestfan··on 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey Results
"49,000+" makes this the least responses the survey has gotten since 2016 ("over fifty thousand"), every year in between has been in the 65-100k range. Seems as though enthusiasm around SO has diminished significantly over the past year.

My guess is that pro-AI devs have abandoned the site, and anti-AI devs are upset with their collaboration with AI companies.

biggestfan··on Zorin OS
That's about normal system updates. Upgrading between versions appears to still require a full reinstall: https://github.com/elementary/os/wiki/Release-Upgrades

Also, strange to move those into settings IMO.

biggestfan··on Zorin OS
And in place upgrades! It was a massive problem for years with Zorin (and still exists with other "user friendly" distros like Elementary), requiring a full system reinstall every time a new version released.

That being said, I still think this is a bit of a strange option when there's several Ubuntu flavors with more Windows-esque desktops, plus Linux Mint which offers a lot of these benefits with a much larger userbase and therefore better support (though Zorin is more "modern" looking). Not a bad option but not one I'd think to recommend often.

biggestfan··on Fairphone 6 is switching to a new design that's even more sustainable
The Pixels had the worst option for a while: the under-screen optical sensor. Slow and prone to failure. They've since switched it out for an ultrasonic sensor, but it was shockingly bad for a few years.
biggestfan··on Small3dlib: Public domain 3D software rasterizer
Also worth nothing that this person is an open pedophilia advocate and "race realist" as can be seen on their homepage https://www.tastyfish.cz/

Can't speak for the quality of the software but important to note.

biggestfan··on Overture Maps Foundation Releases Beta of Its First Open Map Dataset
What do you think is being extended here? OpenStreetMap?
biggestfan··on Detect when your installed Chrome extensions have changed owners
The ideal solution would be similar to when an extension asks for new permissions: disable it with a pop-up that informs you of the change and allows you to re-enable it.
biggestfan··on How iTunes Is Changing on PC
Assuming you mean the pre-2.0 Amarok, you might be interested in Strawberry: https://www.strawberrymusicplayer.org/

It's a a fork of a fork of the old Amarok, supporting more features and modern support while retaining the original UI.

biggestfan··on Bluesky signups are now open to the public
When you're not logged in, the profile view shows you the most liked posts from that account, not the most recent. Not sure why.
biggestfan··on Threads is blocking servers on the Fediverse. Here's how we unblocked ourselves.
The author of this was the head of engineering at Truth Social: https://www.reuters.com/technology/head-engineering-trumps-t.... He also runs/ran several "GC" focused instances, and worked at Gab (the "alt-right" social media that rebased itself on Mastodon). This is an intentionally vague post by someone with a bad history, trying to play cover for instances that Meta obviously doesn't want to associate with.
biggestfan··on Threads, an Instagram app
You should post any codes you have here, I imagine the HN userbase is more likely than most to be interested in trying a project like that out (or maybe it's just me :))
biggestfan··on Brave Browser introduces vertical tabs
It's strange to me how a key selling point of these vertical tabs is "save on vertical space", but they almost always still include a header bar. You can see in the video they posted that it saves almost no vertical space, while now taking up a massive amount of horizontal space.
biggestfan··on Firefox 66 to block automatically playing audible video and audio (2019)
A video you can hear (in other words, this blocks websites from automatically making noise).
biggestfan··on Vala Programming Language
I would say the greatest strength of Elementary is being very consistent and opinionated, which I imagine the heavy usage of Vala helped with. It really does feel to me like an even more opinionated version of GNOME (heavy usage of Vala and GTK, mandating all apps published to their store also be GTK and open source, having a very specific desktop experience without many customization options).
biggestfan··on Vala Programming Language
Elementary OS (https://elementary.io/) probably has the most thorough usage of it, most of their DE and all of their built in apps are written in Vala (as well as most of the 3rd party apps published through their store).
