bilekas··on North Korean fake job interview led to $6.3B Binance heist
Doing ANYTHING on a work issued laptop outside of your role is such a dumb idea for a litany of obvious reasons that I'm genuinely shocked people do it. Let alone participate in interviews for other companies on it.
bilekas··on Meta ordered to pay $25B penalty in New Mexico Cambridge Analytica case
> as long as the punishments are not equal to their revenues generating by these illegal methods

I would say this qualifies no?

They certainly didn't get 25 Billion in fees from Cambridge analítica. Unless they did any my conception of business is just way off.

bilekas··on Meta ordered to pay $25B penalty in New Mexico Cambridge Analytica case
Holy! This might be the first time I've seen a meta fine that actually feels substantial enough for them to change behaviours. That's impressive.
bilekas··on Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads
When their flie opening dialog on macOS opens up, if I go into a folder by mistake, and I want to go to the parent folder.. It's not possible.

Why or how would some designer say "Perfect". The context of a filesystem browser requires those actions, level up from current directory is a basic feature. Hell worst case just give me the entire current directory path as a string and I can remove the current folder and go.

It is mind boggling how they're aclaimed for being so innovative with UI/UX and yet get the foundational basics so wrong.

bilekas··on Security advisory: Critical remote code execution vulnerabilities, update now
It looks like bunny have added their waf rule too for mitigation.

bilekas··on Security advisory: Critical remote code execution vulnerabilities, update now
I don't understand why PHP is redundant now that we have llms?
bilekas··on Meta’s new commercial terms will allow the scraping of news sites: experts
So basically, thanks for building our business side of Facebook for all those years, we are changing the rules of the game now in so if you want to continue using our service, we get to use all of your website's data however we like in perpetuity.

There isn't even a veil of "customer satisfaction is important" anymore.

bilekas··on I posted to HN, and then my website was flooded with AI bot traffic
If there's a know CVE in a version of cPanel ir wordpress for example, those platforms broadcast what version they're on, so the matching cve being known is not illegal. You're just correlating known vulnerable versions without doing any probing. Pen testing however, a bit more involved in pulling info out without permission is illegal.
bilekas··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
Depressing to know that these CVEs were known since August.. and not one manufacturer forced an update to their always online devices.. and the regular customer will foot the bill for the incompetency.
bilekas··on Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt in Rust and released it as OSS
I'm quite mixed on this if it's a positive or not.. But I have to say, their website did give me a good chuckle.

> Built the hard way.

> Every Crafting App is written from scratch in Rust and held to the same rules.

bilekas··on ESP32-C3 Adblock
Nice project and poc maybe, but I'm not seeing the practical application of this in a real world env, surely the latency is a deal breaker ?
bilekas··on US closely monitoring case of lab worker who possibly died of plague in Siberia
> a 28-year-old employee at the anti-plague institute in the city of Irkutsk, became ill at work...

> It remains unclear how she became unwell.

That's some fine reporting right there.

bilekas··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
You're assuming the open models will follow regulations though.
bilekas··on Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
It's not quite spying when you willingly hand over this information and agree to terms of service. You're data is not considered yours alone.
bilekas··on European payments groups join forces to challenge US dominance
Right, and now the EU will have a consolidated one. It's a clear great step!
bilekas··on European payments groups join forces to challenge US dominance
Not being under the heel of a US financial Duopoly when their dear leader decides to tell them to charge 100%.

Regional Financial autonomy is a very attractive benefit.

bilekas··on European payments groups join forces to challenge US dominance
They don't though, unless I'm missing something stupid there is parity across all national options. And here for example the bank itself has Bancomat AND Visa as an option to pay by at a POS or online etc.

This will allow me to use my card online with a merchant in Germany for example and use my Bancomat process (whatever the new interface is called) will be the gateway.

bilekas··on European payments groups join forces to challenge US dominance
So many people commenting that seem to miss what this is. It's the merging of national systems to simply allow a second option. Meaning no influence oversize from the duopoly. See steam news with visa for an example of then throwing their weight.
bilekas··on European payments groups join forces to challenge US dominance
No it's not. Here in Italy your debit card allows you to pay by bancomat or Visa.
bilekas··on Who should be held accountable when an AI Agent (accidentally) acts maliciously?
"Who's responsible for training an assassin and asking it to go out into the world ?"

The fact this is being discussed as a legitimate question is the real story.

"We trained this beast of processing power, we asked it for a task, and it did something wrong... Who's to blame ?"

Trained on stolen books and material, every word we've all spoken, most lines of code we've ever written with not even an acknowledgment.

Must be the data scientists in their rooms calculating the response rate of every token to blame ? Our version of AI is not sentient. Stop making it seem so. But we need to ask where to look for the culprit ?

bilekas··on Jeff – Jev-compatible 0.8B decision models, trained at home, ~30 ms
Well, I'm no expert, but this runs on Qwen3.5 and Gemma 4, stripped down, but they're pretty pricey.
bilekas··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
There's a clause in my company, once regulations around privacy that are al least comparable to the EU are enforced, we sell all assets and return money based on profits to share holders.

Then we start a new company creating just aggressive advertising patents so that they're not created by aggressive companies.

Edit : Hypothetical company, this is all satire.

bilekas··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
Flock are competition, their investors would never like my idea.
bilekas··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
I am starting a surveillance company in the US. I'll sell the data to anyone who wants. I'll put cameras up wherever I like, call it protection of the people, the police will enjoy it doing a lot of work for them and then I'll point cameras squarely at my competition, 24 hours a day, 365 a year, until they ask for regulations.

If anyone would like to kickstart let me know.

bilekas··on Jeff – Jev-compatible 0.8B decision models, trained at home, ~30 ms
Can we get a price comparisson ?

Edit: Running them for the masses.

bilekas··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
Interim is always a temp one though, and the fact it was the previous feels to me at least like them saying "Hey we need a favour" but I have no insight.
bilekas··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
IRC really is good. It's reliable too, but it really fell behind the times and never pushed forward with additions to the spec and such. When the clients and libraries tapered off too it just felt like it froze.
bilekas··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
The third option could surely be he was fired ? Although I would imagine MongoDB would have organised someone already to take over.
bilekas··on There are no "rogue" AI agents
> OpenAI is negligent and should be prosecuted for negligence.

I feel like this will just never happen on a federal level when these private AI companies account for so much of the economy. They've made themselves too big to fail. Fining / Punishing them in any meaningful way seems unlikely.

bilekas··on Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests
There are always nice, but there are a lot of scaffolding work involved with larger systems. It would be nice to be able to provide for example the terraform of the infrastructure and let these tool create their own. Might be a nice feature to add because I haven't seen it done yet.
