bilvar··on Britain to introduce compulsory digital ID for workers
How can they do this? The next election in UK is in 4 years.
bilvar··on Several people fired after clampdown on speech over Charlie Kirk shooting
I'm just sick of lies and propaganda like this leading to the brutal murder of people. Actual brutal murder, not imagined.
bilvar··on Writing with LLM is not a shame
You are right.
bilvar··on Neuralink 'Participant 1' says his life has changed
Experimental procedure on volunteer is experimental. More news at 11.
bilvar··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
Well done Elon! Very excited for the future!
bilvar··on Writing with LLM is not a shame
Did people really use to do all that work when someone asked them to write a recommendation on LinkedIn?

bilvar··on Visa and Mastercard are getting overwhelmed by gamer fury over censorship
Good, the social engineering has become tiresome.
bilvar··on A 37-year-old wanting to learn computer science
What's surprising to me is that I've received downvotes for mentioning this.
bilvar··on A 37-year-old wanting to learn computer science
The things described as the goal of the OP are not Computer Science, they're mostly Software Engineering/Development. Even though there is overlap Computer Science is mostly math, completely irrelevant to setting up static blogs or web servers and somewhat relevant to developing applications. A more accurate title would have been "wanting to learn software development and the relevant bits of computer science which help with that"
bilvar··on I deleted my second brain
I'm not sure I can relate to the author. My Zettelkasten is not a todo list or project binder or whatever personal life management function they use it for.

Mine is for consolidation of knowledge. For instance, when I study math and I write a pen and paper proof as an exercise I then write a clean note from scratch and link to other theorems or corollary notes I have etc. Similar stuff for computer science or programming. I find out that this process solidifies the work I'd already done and make it less likely to forget.

I also think people get a bit too dogmatic about the ways to use technology to help improve your life. Like, what the heck complex rules about Zettelkasten? I don't know what kind of expectations they have going into this. Do these "influencers" telling you how to use it sell the promise of the ultra-intelligent god from the popular meme? Just open the damn editor and write, you will find what works for you through tinkering and iteration.

bilvar··on US examining whether UK's encryption demand on Apple broke data treaty
Well, apparently even sovereign countries sign treaties with each other.
bilvar··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
I was just responding to a dubious assertion with a clear counter-example.

As for DOGE, I live in a different country and not really care to be frank, as an external observer the US is a testbed. We will see what kinds of results going all guns blazing to reduce fraud in government, instead of asking nicely, will produce in due time. As your leftist friend said, you need to break some eggs to make an omelette.

bilvar··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
Same, the UK government definitely needs a similar audit.
bilvar··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
> Reality has a famously left wing bias.

That's a bit ironic given leftist claims that men can become women and vice-versa.

bilvar··on In the trenches: on being an Engineering Manager
Your job as a manager is to cut noise down for your team, so that they can focus on the signal. If you cannot decide on your own that some things are just plain silly and not worth their time to democratize the decision, then you’re not cut out for this job - sorry.
bilvar··on In the trenches: on being an Engineering Manager
In my experience engineering managers have been just exception handlers, not leaders. If they can handle the exception by finding the right person to delegate to its fine, otherwise they rethrow so that that it bubbles up and the next level of management can catch it.

Generally, they never made any real decisions or have any real vision to inspire with and execute.

bilvar··on In the trenches: on being an Engineering Manager
Oh my god, if my manager asked me to waste my time on such trivialities - or even worse, calling team meetings to “discuss” them so that we can now collectively waste our time, I would quit the next moment. During my exit interview I would state that my manager was an imbecile, incompetent and the reason I am leaving.
bilvar··on Tesla reports 1.1% sales drop for 2024, first annual decline in at least 9 years
That's rather an expansive and imaginative interpretation of the facts at hand.
bilvar··on Tesla reports 1.1% sales drop for 2024, first annual decline in at least 9 years
I wish you were that meticulous with your ideological brethren as well. You don't have to ban anyone, you simply choose to ban people based on your personal preferences and/or which side of the bed you woke up today. And that's alright as this is a privately owned site, but stop with the hypocrisy please.

When did Musk say that EVs are trash?

bilvar··on UK's Online Safety Act comes into force
They don't, no billionaire can put you in jail for believing/saying something different that they want you to believe.

And let me get this straight, you think that having an institution that legislates the truth is protection against billionaires usurping that power? Who has the money to lobby those institutions to do their bidding? Me and you or the billionaire?

bilvar··on UK's Online Safety Act comes into force
You want to give the power to the people that make the laws to also decree what is true or not? This is going to turn out well.

I don’t think that having institutions that can legislate the truth is compatible with free and just societies. Political power and democratic majorities do not decide the truth. if you think otherwise I don’t believe there is common ground to be found.

bilvar··on UK's Online Safety Act comes into force
Murder is already illegal, and threatening to murder someone is already illegal. Any further legislation, the burden of proof is on them not on me or the parent poster. Otherwise one day they might claim that me taking a shit will lead to their murder and have my toilets removed.
bilvar··on UK's Online Safety Act comes into force
Who determines what is misinformation? And after we have established this, who determines whether it was deliberate?
bilvar··on UK's Online Safety Act comes into force
Threatening people online was already illegal.
bilvar··on UK's Online Safety Act comes into force
You know political assassination was a thing even before Twitter right?
