binarynate··on Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg showdown may reportedly happen in Rome’s Colosseum
Honestly, this seems like a win-win for humanity. We get entertainment, money's raised for a charity, and Musk & Zuck get a unique experience and maybe a reputation boost. Unless one them is killed or seriously injured, in which case that might alter the course of their companies—but it seems like the benefits outweigh the risks (for us).
binarynate··on Ask HN: Is C Really That “Difficult”?
C and C++ are different languages. It's subjective, but both are generally more difficult than garbage collected languages because you have to think about memory management and they don't have some of the high-level utilities other languages do (like an easy to use timer). IMO, modern C++ isn't too gnarly (it has a nice standard library that with components like smart pointers and containers), but it's still a PITA compared to garbage collected languages because it builds slowly and you do have to think about memory management like I mentioned. C is gnarlier IMO because its standard library is much more bare bones and it doesn't have the built-in smart pointers or containers that C++ has.
binarynate··on Apple might be getting into VR at the worst possible time
It will be interesting to see how Apple prices and frames this device. $3k is an enormous price tag that would limit its adoption to enterprise (which isn't a big market today) and the richest Apple fans. So either the rumored price is significantly off ($1.5k = still expensive but more within reach of gamers and prosumers) or Apple thinks its headset is so revolutionary that it will win over many businesses that don't use mixed reality yet today.

I also expect Apple to frame this as an AR device that can also do VR (rather than the other way around). In other words, if it's an AR device that is 10x better than Hololens 2 and slightly cheaper, they can capture that existing (small) enterprise AR market today and grow that market much larger.

binarynate··on Twitter updates its website logo to Dogecoin
Yeah, you're right. I didn't realize there's currently a bug where retweets aren't labeled.
binarynate··on Twitter updates its website logo to Dogecoin
Unsure if this related, but on the web, my "Following" feed is also now full of tweets from people I don't follow.

binarynate··on Using ChatGPT to create games with Unity
Just a heads-up: this isn't my work. I just spotted it on the Unity subreddit and thought it was interesting.
binarynate··on Ask HN: How about we rename FAANG to MAMAA?
5 seconds after I posted this, I Googled it and found that I'm definitely not the first one to think of MAMAA:

https://fortune.com/2021/10/29/faang-mamaa-jim-cramer-tech-f...

This just further convinces me that it's time to deprecate FAANG in favor of MAMAA.

binarynate··on Ask HN: Best small and large expenses in 2022?
Best small expense: Sodastream Fizzi One Touch for making seltzer (replaced buying Topo Chico and LaCroix)

Best large expense: WhisperRoom sound booth to allow me to sing and play guitar in my apartment without my neighbors hearing.

binarynate··on California, Midwest at ‘high risk’ for electricity shortages in next five years
Interestingly, the Chicago metro area is excluded from the large swath of midwestern states at high-risk. I wonder if this is partially because Chicago gets much of its power from six nuclear reactors in the area:

binarynate··on Ask HN: Any other Twitter users seeing an uptick in spam DMs?
Thanks for your reply! I get that same crypto spam, too. I'm now getting way more spam than legitimate customer DMs, so if it keeps up, I'll probably close my DMs and link to my company contact form.
binarynate··on The complicated man who made 'Rudolph'
Just to clarify: this is about the maker of the stop motion film about Rudolph. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was originally created in 1939 as a book for the Chicago-based Montgomery Ward department store:

binarynate··on Moving to the US as a founder: which city to choose?
He mentioned wanting to be close to the sea, which might give Peoria the upper hand. But then he also mentioned valuing lower taxes, so Muncie might be the best fit after all.
binarynate··on Company logos designed by Paul Rand (IBM, UPS, ABC, NeXT, Enron, etc.)
There are some fun surprises in there. For example, I didn't know Rand designed the logo for Columbus, Indiana, a small town I used to live by. The C's from the logo are sprinkled in art and signs throughout downtown.
binarynate··on Elon Musk’s Boring Company Ghosts Cities Across America
Now that I live in a city with a good train system (Chicago), a plan to alleviate traffic in large cities by boring tunnels for more cars sounds incredibly inefficient, and clearly driven by Musk's incentive to sell cars.
binarynate··on Ask HN: What do you like/dislike about Golang?
Like:

- Compiles to a static binary that's relatively small compared to something like .NET AOT.

- Structural typing.

- No semicolons.

Dislike:

- Lack of exceptions. I can understand wanting to avoid exceptions for safety critical software like avionics, but for most application programming, requiring manual error handling for every function call is cumbersome and unnecessary.

- Too verbose / lacking features. For example, there's not a short syntax for lambda expressions, like the => operator in C# or JavaScript.

- Public / private access modifiers at the package level rather than the class level (there are no classes).

- Language development is driven primarily by Google, who has a history of killing products.

binarynate··on Top 10 Best Cults in Chicago According to Yelp
I mostly just think it's funny that through a series of automated flukes, this is Google's top search result for "Chicago cults". The first fluke being that Yelp's SEO factory backend generated a page dedicated to the best local cults in Chicago, and the second that Google thought it was the best search result.
binarynate··on Top 10 Best Cults in Chicago According to Yelp
I just found it amusing that this is the first result on Google for "Chicago cults". https://google.com/search?q=Chicago+cults
binarynate··on Ask HN: What sort of systemic risk to crypto is Paul Graham referring to?
Coinbase was part of the YC Summer '12 batch. What are the odds he's referring to Brian Armstrong? It may be a long shot, but that would at least explain why the concern from his friend is noteworthy.
binarynate··on $477M FTX ‘hack’ was a Bahamian government asset seizure
Any thoughts on why SBF lied to the Vox reporter about it being a hack?

Maybe he just didn't want to have to explain some breaking news to her.

binarynate··on A Six-Figure Income Is Needed Just to Afford the Typical US Home
A six-figure income may be needed to afford a house in a large or coastal city, but there are huge swaths of the US where housing is not nearly as expensive as this article suggests. For example, the typical home value in Ohio is ~$215k:

https://www.fool.com/the-ascent/research/average-house-price...

As someone from the midwest, I push back on the assumption that paying $400k for a house is the typical US experience.

binarynate··on AngelList Is Now Wellfound
The current title is inaccurate; it should be "AngelList Talent is now Wellfound". The investing part of AngelList is still AngelList: https://angellist.com
binarynate··on Open-source software vs. the proposed Cyber Resilience Act
I'm an American that sells software to clients in the EU that this legislation considers a Class I critical product (https://vuplex.com). If this law is passed, what would be the consequence of not hiring an auditor to comply with it? Depending on the cost of an auditor, compliance may cost more than the revenue generated from the EU. If that's the case, it may no longer be economical for me to sell to clients in the EU.

binarynate··on SBF in December: “You can beat Mt. Gox by just not losing everyone's money”
Another highlight is SBF describing how when they were raising capital, they couldn't answer investors' questions about risk, custody, and audits.

https://youtu.be/J2V4tg0QkBk?t=1523

"I don't know, we just fucking started this company like two months ago and we're trying to scale up extremely quickly. Like, we don't have great answers to some of your questions"

binarynate··on Ask HN: Why didn't HN spot SBF?
We didn't know what the balance sheets of FTX and Alameda looked like, and most of us don't know enough about the space to guess this was happening. Brian Armstrong (founder of Coinbase) was on the All-In podcast yesterday and said he was curious how SBF had so much liquidity, but even he admitted he didn't see this coming in the slightest: https://youtu.be/Id7cNqwqt1I?t=2612
