binarysneaker··on My favorite 1980's Canadian TV show: Bits and Bytes
I'd love to watch all of them. Does anyone have a torrent?
binarysneaker··on Show HN: DN$ – an innovative, ad-supported DNS resolver
Good one
binarysneaker··on Show HN: 3 years and 1M users later, I just open-sourced my "Internet OS"

binarysneaker··on How to think about software quality (2022)
As someone this happened to, I was actually impressed they looked me up and reached out. Knowing they cared that much meant that I cared too and I was able to prioritise the request with the product team. When we completed the request, we celebrated, and even implemented uservoice on some sites to improve the feedback loop.
binarysneaker··on London trains see power cut as thousands stranded in dark for hours
Not necessarily. Sometimes news articles come from a source such as the Associated Press and are rewritten or reworded before publication.
binarysneaker··on A design system for the federal government
Not a patch on the UK government design system IMO. Used by the UK gov and 3rd parties to produce consistent, accessible and aesthetically pleasing public service front-ends. More: https://design-system.service.gov.uk/
binarysneaker··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
Awesome!

The pin count increase has improved the situation, but it's still noticeable. I'm using Vancouver/CA as the test if that helps.

binarysneaker··on Ask HN: Tell us about your project that's not done yet but you want feedback on
Like others, bookmarked. So useful, thank you. Feedback as requested:

1. It's a map of "the best", so maybe the default filter shouldn't show "ok" recommendations

2. The numbers on the pins change regularly (I'm on mobile/Firefox). Maybe the pin could indicate the source of the review, or the quality, or the restaurant type? Or not have the number at all.

3. Moving the map around reloads the pins for the viewed area, but it sometimes loads a different set of pins for a big city. Is there a max number of pins being loaded on each map view change? If so, perhaps the max should be higher?

Hope that helps!

binarysneaker··on Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators from Subreddits Continuing Blackouts
As a mod of one of the subs staying dark, I'm done with Reddit and their management team. Time for the next thing...
binarysneaker··on Show HN: Non.io, a Reddit-like platform Ive been working on for the last 4 years
THIS. This is the pro move.
binarysneaker··on Hundreds of millions of stars turned into a map of GitHub projects
"Homelabia" made me smile like a schoolboy.
binarysneaker··on The day Windows died
Don't worry, I expect Microsoft will replace their search with gpt in the future. "Hey Windows, find me that work presentation I worked on a while back".
binarysneaker··on ChatGPT-Linux-Assistant
I've been finding chatgpt useful for more and more tasks recently, but I'm definitely not ready to try something this crazy.

For those who want to try something similar, but safer, warp terminal (macos) has an awesome AI command completion ... which you can eyeball first before executing. If someone is new to the terminal, bash scripting or figuring out ffmpeg, it's pretty great.

(No affiliation with warp, just a happy user)

binarysneaker··on A Software as a Service (SaaS) log collection framework
Grove is a Software as a Service (SaaS) log collection framework, designed to support collection of logs from services which do not natively support log streaming.

Grove enables teams to collect security related events from their vendors in a reliable and consistent way. This data may then be stored and analyzed with a team’s _existing_ tooling in order to support threat detection and compliance programmes.

Grove was created and is currently maintained by the HashiCorp security team.

binarysneaker··on Why did Mozilla remove XUL add-ons? (2020)
But you can run Firefox Nightly and use a custom extensions list. This is how I have all my regular extensions running great on Android.
binarysneaker··on Ask HN: Are Any of You Tired from macOS and Want to Go Back to Linux?
Not snarky, I feel the same. My work laptop is a MacBook Pro, and I run a bunch of tools to be productive (Rectangle, Raycast, SoundSource).

My personal laptop is Ubuntu, and I have a stack of dotfiles to configure it the way I like.

binarysneaker··on I've fuzzed a small part of the GitHub API (2020)
GitHub performs fuzzing as part of their testing, so I'm not surprised there aren't any significant findings. I am surprised this is on hackernews two years later though.
binarysneaker··on Show HN: Posterity Automations – Get things done from the afterlife
Tech has changed _a lot_ over the past few decades. Auth tokens expire. I'd be interested to hear how you're planning to future proof your solution.
binarysneaker··on Meta Quest Pro
Absolutely. It's about time we raised our heads and looked at where humanity is heading. I feel bad for my kids if this is it.
binarysneaker··on Google’s video chat merger begins: Now there are two “Google Meet” apps
/me carries on using Signal, oblivious.

Seriously, f*k off Google, I've been waiting years for you to consolidate your chat/IM/meeting apps, and Apple showed you how it's done. Yet, here we are in 2022.

binarysneaker··on Why Is the Web So Monotonous? Google
Part of the problem is the way that data is presented. Google indexes HTML, but wouldn't it be better if sites provided a standard interface to their [shareable] data, so that data quality, and searches could get better?
binarysneaker··on Are We Wayland Yet?
Change takes time. There's always Windows... /s
binarysneaker··on Our plans for Thunderbird on Android
Long time Android Firefox user here, mainly because of Ublock. Syncing with my Mozilla account was a plus, I use Firefox on desktop because of its container tabs. Lately I switched to Brave (Android), which is noticeably faster, and supports extensions too.
binarysneaker··on Hacker News personal ranking app (2012)
Thanks for the mention :) Just wanted to point out that I run that script once a day.
binarysneaker··on The fish shell is amazing
+1. What's the point of a great shell, if I can't run the millions (!!) of existing scripts without refactoring them?! Zsh does the autocompletion just as well, so I'll stick with that.
binarysneaker··on The fish shell is amazing
Came here to say the same. The default zsh config in Kali has some pretty nice autocompletions, which I've borrowed and use on all my other systems.
binarysneaker··on New German government calls for European ban on biometric mass surveillance
I guess now that the UK is no longer part of the EU, this has a higher probability of happening.
binarysneaker··on Running a fake power plant on the internet for a month
Would be interested in a follow up article, especially if it baited more activity. The conclusion is woefully short, and I could speculate on some of the results, particularly the activity from the .tw domain. More investigation welcome.
binarysneaker··on Google Stories
Nope! Don't need this, don't want it. Google finding new directions to continue their search and ad dominance.
